                        Tips and Troubleshooting

COMPATIBILITY:

1. A few modems report a generic speed of 2400 bps, regardless of
their maximum speed. If you have a high-speed modem, and SFX
reports it to be only 2400 bps, manually set it to the
correct speed. SFX will save the setting and use it in the
future. The following are a few of the modems that fall
   into this category:

   Viva, 14.4 Faxmodem/internal, P/N: 044-502702-000
   Prometheus, ProModem 144E/external, P/N: PMD-31
Complete PC, Turbo Modem Plus 14.4 Faxmodem (older models)

2. The following modems do not work correctly with SFX or WSFX:

   Computer Peripherals Inc, Hook-up 2400SE/external
The Complete PC, Complete Modem PLUS 9624 FAX/MODEM.

3. Nearly all modems claim they are 100% compatible with the
Hayes standard or they emulate the Hayes standard. This is not
always true. SFX uses a generic initialization method. If
your modem does not respond correctly it may require a custom
   initialization string.

CONFIGURATION:

4. SFX supports modems using IRQ 3 and 4 only. If the
modem is set for a different IRQ, for example 5, SFX
does not work. WSFX can support IRQs other than 3 and 4.
To achieve this the user must set up the configuration using
the PORTS option in Control Panel.

5. If the user has a mouse on COM1, any serial device on COM2
(modem, scanner or printer), and a modem on COM4, the internal
ROM BIOS will map COM4 to show as COM3 to fill the gap.

         User wants BIOS will map

   COM1 mouse mouse
   COM2 scanner scanner
   COM3 * empty * modem
   COM4 modem * empty *

Even though SFX will report the modem is on COM3 it will
   function normally.

6. In the DOS shell under Windows, SFX sometimes cannot
access the modem properly. If you want to use SFX
under Windows, make an icon in the Program Manager and start
   SFX directly from it.

CAUTIONS:

7. If you run WSFX in a Windows shell under OS/2 you cannot
switch to another task while downloading. This will cause
WSFX to immediately drop the line. SFX is much more
   stable in the OS/2 environment.

8. Floppy/Hard Drive Controllers:
All floppy/hard drive controllers, other than SCSI Bus
Mastering controllers, require interrupting the CPU to make
transactions between memory and the drives. This in turn
interrupts any communications that might be occurring on a COM
port. Therefore, in Windows, any intensive disk action such
as searching for a file or formatting a diskette may cause the
   communications line to be dropped.

10. Validation code

The validation results for WSFX should be:

                    File Name: WSFX.EXE
                         Size: 194,528
                         Date: 11-22-1993
               Check Method 1: 2880
               Check Method 2: 111C

If your copy of WSFX differs, it may have been damaged. Always
obtain your copy of WSFX from a known source. The latest version
of WSFX and validation data for WSFX.EXE can be obtained from
