LogBook Master Index: AVAILABLE SOUNDTRACKS AND VIDEOS
           compiled by Earl Green

The following lists will help you track down those multimedia momentos of
your favorite shows. As there really aren't any crossovers, per se, I did not
reformat and combine the information for different shows such as Trek and Dr.
Who, as it really wasn't necessary; they each have their own little sections.
Being a big fan of film soundtracks myself, you may find some of my views below
entirely subjective, so feel free to veto my admittedly finicky recommendations!
If anyone else out there has more information on soundtrack albums (especially
interested in info on rare and esoteric items) and videos, please feel free to
Netmail it to me at 1:3822/1. Also, special thanks to those who've contributed
information to this file (particularly the gang who submitted info originally
intended for the WHO echo soundtrack FAQ) - your help makes this file all the
more interesting!
One final note...I do not work for, nor am I affiliated with, any of the
manufacturers or distributors of the products listed in this file; while I do
offer my opinions of some soundtracks, a product's inclusion in these lists does
not in *any* way imply an endorsement on the part of myself or those who
contributed information to this work. As with all things, buy at your own risk.

                             Star Trek Soundtracks

The following is a list of the commercially available soundtrack albums, as well
as a smattering of various related (some in extremely vague ways!) items:

  TOS Sound Effects GNPD 8010
Vol. I: "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" GNPD 8006
Vol. II: "The Doomsday Machine" and "Amok Time" GNPD 8025
Vol. III: "Shore Leave" and "The Naked Time" GNPD 8030
"Is There In Truth No Beauty?"/"Paradise Syndrome" [Label X] LXCD 703
        "Corbomite Maneuver"/"Mudd's Women"/"Charlie X"/
"Doomsday Machine" [Varese Sarabande] VCD 47235
(New digital recordings; arr. & conducted by Fred Steiner)
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture" [CBS] CK-36334
"Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" GNPD 8022
"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" GNPD 8023
"Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" [MCA] MCAD-6195
(Includes a couple of jazz pieces performed by the fusion
jazz group The Yellowjackets; one is a sort of jazz
rendition of the movie's main theme)
"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" [Epic] EK-45267
(Includes "The Moon's a Window to Heaven" - supposedly
the song Uhura performed in her "fan dancing" scene,
            performed here by Hiroshima)
"Star Trek: The Astral Symphony" [Paramount] PAO-?????
(A curious hodge-podge compilation of pieces from the
first five movies, this release was intended to cash
in on 1991's 25th anniversary publicity)
"Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" [MCA] MCAD-10512

TNG Vol. I: "Encounter at Farpoint" GNPD 8012
Vol. II: "The Best of Both Worlds" parts I and II GNPD 8026
Vol. III: "Yesterday's Enteprise," "Hollow Pursuits," and
"Unification" parts I and II GNPD 8031
Vol. IV: "Tin Man" and others <-- delayed until 1995 GNPD 8039?
(This long-awaited album has been delayed until mid-1995
at Paramount's behest since the studio feels that it
would conflict with the sales of the "Star Trek:
            Generations" soundtrack in late '94.)
        "Star Trek: Generations" GNPD 8040
(Includes several tracks of sound effects, most from the
series but a few from the movie)

DSN Vol. I: "Emissary" GNPD 8034
Theme from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (CD single) GNPD 1401
(Song has been remixed into a sort of "L.A. Law,"
Mike-Post-esque version with drums & guitar)

VOY Vol. I: "The Caretaker" <-- to be released March 1995 GNPD 8041?

MISC. Soundtrack from the PBS series "Space Age" [Narada] ND-66003
Album by Jay Chattaway; much of his thematic material
is VERY similar to the style used in TNG's 5th/6th
           seasons, particularly "The Chase."
Brahms Sextet, Op. 18 [CBS] MPK-44851
Recorded at Prades, France, June 1952 - the Adante,
Ma Moderato movement is the bit o' Brahms used in
"Sarek," in which it was passed off as Mozart.
Brent Spiner - "Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back" [Bay Cities/Milan] 873 125
An EXCELLENT collection of Broadway tunes and other
assorted oldies sung by Spiner, with a full orchestra
and brass band behind him conducted by Dennis McCarthy.
This album has not been pressed anywhere in quite some
time, so finding a copy anywhere near mint condition is
           very slim, espcially on CD.
Theodore Bikel - various albums [Bainbridge]
I don't have any of these, but according to the CDC
online catalog's "others" listing, there are three
albums of Jewish folk songs sung by Bikel, who some of
you may recall played Worf's foster father in "Family" (as
well as a guest shot on Babylon 5 in "TKO").
Patrick Stewart - "A Christmas Carol" [Simon & Schuster]
A two-cassette reading of Dickens' "Christmas Carol" as
only Patrick Stewart can perform it! (I used to have the
catalog number for this, but I sold my copy when I moved,
so someone else who owns it will have to help me out here.
To the best of my knowledge, this has been released on tape
           only.)
William Shatner - "The Transformed Man" [???]
I haven't a clue as to what this is, just that it's in the
Star Tech catalog as a recently rereleased album available
only as an import. Not a new item, but only recently put
on disc for the first time.

All the albums above with a "GNPD" designation are released by GNP Crescendo,
which now seems to be the clearinghouse for Trek music; this, however, is not a
problem; all of the TNG soundtracks are "DDD," and the stereo remastering done
on the TOS scores must be heard to be believed. Varese Sarabande also released
re-recordings of TOS scores in 1986, and though the arrangements and new
recordings are great and close to the quality of the film scores, some of them
also use some pretty cheesy sounding organ tones - a caveat to those tired of
the "60's sound"!

                                Other Soundtracks

Babylon 5 - to be released in February 1995 [Sonic Images]
Battlestar Galactica - original soundtrack by Stu Phillips [Edel] TCS 104-2
You remember "Galactica," don't you? Of course you do!
And it was your favorite show and you're probably dying
to find the music from it! Yeah, right. Actually, it's
not all bad - for blatant John Williams pastiche, that
is. Sadly included is the disco song from the casino.
All of this music is from the pilot movie, including the
rather good extended opening title sequence.
New Music For Films, Vol. I by Christopher Franke - this is [Varese] VSD-5393
an album of music from Chris Franke, the Tangerine Dream
alumnus who now scores "Babylon 5" and "MANTIS." The
three movies whose scores are excerpted for this disc are
"Eye of the Storm," "McBain" and "She Woke Up." A lot of
it sounds very much the same, as is typical of Franke.
The Star Wars Trilogy Box Set by John Williams - a truly [Fox Film Scores]
excellent four-disc collection with damn near *every* bit 07822-11012-2
of music from the three Star Wars films, finally offering
"The Empire Strikes Back"'s soundtrack the double length
it was unjustly denied in its original CD release, and
also doubling the length of the "Return of the Jedi" score
which was sadly halved even in its original LP form. The
packaging and liner notes booklet are excellent bonuses!
Highest recommendations for die-hard Lucasfilm fans!

                                Star Trek Videos

The Original Series: Paramount is now mysteriously repackaging the entire
original Star Trek library with those damned SkyBox super duper
        collector's edition one-of-a-kind-can't-get-'em-any-other-way trading
cards. This was annoying but tolerable when the cards were stuffed in
with action figures, but it's an insult to the video buying public's
intelligence when it implies you gotta go get a new copy of a single
episode videotape at $12+ a pop for the bloody trading card. Titles
marked with the "$" therefore denote those tapes which include the new
cards! All titles up to 60040-60 are now closed-captioned as well. The
titles below are listed in order of catalog number; for correct
broadcast order of the episodes, please see TOSLOGBK.TXT in the LogBook

"Emissary," presently included only in a "Maiden Voyages" box set along
with "The Cage" and "Encounter at Farpoint." This section will be

                               Doctor Who Videos

CBS/Fox Video - and, in the past year, Fox Video alone - have been releasing
a steady stream of commercial videos of the stories; in the past few years, the
shows have even been released in their original, multiple-chapter format.
Listed here are the episodes available. To anyone in zone 2: I would like some
PAL catalog numbers to include in this list, if you can help, please drop me a
line! Since there is no Doctor Who episode guide in the LogBook (why bother to
even try surpassing Jean-Marc Lofficier's excellent "Programme Guide?"), the
tapes available are listed in story order. Those with an arrow to the left of
the story title are in episodic format, i.e. the 4+ parts "cliffhang" as
originally intended; other titles I simply don't know about, or are in omnibus
format (like a continuous movie with no breaks). Anyone who'd be willing to
share this info would be thanked profusely in future editions!
Special thanks to Steve Lew for his list of the available tapes as of this
summer!
