                              January 1995 edition

"Of course, if you had an index file, you could look it up in the
                         index file under 'index file'!"
                                            - Tegan Jovanka, from "Castrovalva"

Welcome to something new but not so new! The LogBook Master Index finally
consolidates all of the actor/writer/director listings that previously graced
assorted appendices to the LogBook episode guide files. The Actors' Master
Index is gigantic, rapidly approaching 10,000 lines! Having completely failed
to arrive at an efficient method of cross-referencing the various appendix
files, I decided to have a stab at putting everything in one place.
This necessitated virtually retyping everything. It's almost impossible to
automate the string-search-and-replace process going by the last word of a
title, only to discover that you've accidentally dated the first broadcasts of
"An Unearthly Child," "Galaxy's Child" and "Friday's Child" in 1988, when you
were simply trying to put that date stamp on "THE Child." And don't even bring
"The Children of Auron" into this! Other wonderful things happen when you go
looking for a factor, whether it be "The Armageddon Factor," "The Alternative
Factor," "The Vengeance Factor," "The Icarus Factor"...
Why go through the painstaking process of reformatting all of these appendix
files? For one thing, there were all formatted differently from one another,
and the way they were put together reflected that they had been compiled in
very strange and weird ways. The British SF Index listed each character on a
different line and indicated the year that the episode of the show in question
appeared. The Trek LOGAPNDX file listed which generation of Trek the actor had
appeared in, but jumbled all of his or her different characters - if they
occurred in one show (such as Marc Alaimo as a Romulan and then a Cardassian on
TNG) - into one entry. No premiere date. And Babylon 5's index was even more
basic than that since they're not dealing with generations of anything!
At last, the Master Index corrects these confusing variations on the same
theme and brings you one list which presents the artist's sci-fi "resume" in
chronological order and in an orderly fashion!
This project is for the trivia mavens out there. Good hunting!
