                       INCIDENT AT OGLALA

"On June 26, 1975,in the isolated town of Oglala on the Pine Ridge Indian
Reservation in South Dakota, a shoot-out between AIM (American Indian
Movement) and the F.B.I. left two agents and one Native American dead. After
two Indians were acquitted on the grounds of self-defense, another Indian
activist, named Leonard Peltier, was tried and convicted of double homicide
-despite VERY flimsy evidence-and has been behind bars for fifteen years.

Since then the F.B.I. has gone to great lengths to hide the incident and
has only helped turn Peltier into America's Nelson Mandela-THE symbol of
ongoing injustices suffered by Native Americans.

Robert Redford became involved with Peltier's case in 1980. Peltier was
in solitary confinement at the notoriously brutal Marion State Penitentiary
and was denied visits from his wife and family. But thanks to having just
played a sympathetic warden in the film "Brubaker", Redford was instantly
allowed in to see him. Redford was suprised by the mans composure:"He didn't
beg and plead; I was very affected by his quality and dignity. I left convinced
that he was railroaded."

Redford went to Washington to meet with the newly appointed head of the
F.B.I., Wiliam Webster. Redford tried to convince him the Peltier situation
was "a great opportunity for a clean slate for the FBI, since the public
opinion of the FBI was so low." But, Redford says, he was "totaly stonewalled.
They took me to alot of nice breakfasts and slammed a lot of doors behind me.
Eventually they sent me seventy pages of white noise. It was total obfusction."
He tried other branches of the government , but to no avail. "the attitude
seemed to be if they stonewall long enough, pretend like they're cooperating,
everybody will give up and /or die."

Frustated and angry, he decided to take his adopted cause to the public by
making a film. After briefly considering a feature, he felt that a documentary
would better handle multipoints of view. Encouraged by the success of Errol
Morris's "The Thin Blue Line", which resulted in the freeing of a wrongly
jailed man, Redford hopes that the film, "Incident At Oglala", will reopen
wounds the F.B.I. has doggedly contended don't even exist.

Director Michael Apted sees "Incident At Oglala" as a timely statement on
the U.S. government's reluctance to deal with past and present wrongs. "This
ties in with the whole JFK thing," he says. "Everybody's clamoring about the
release of documents over someone killed in 1963, when Leonard's very much
alive and the government won't release the nine thousand pages of documents
about him. What's in those documents? Why are they afraid to release them?"

The makers of "Incident At Oglala" believe that when the American people
are presented with all the facts, they will demand justice be done. Apted
Said "In the present enviroment I can't imagine George Bush granting a pardon
to a person who has been convicted of killing two FBI agents. Peltier's only
chance is with the public."
