This zipfile contains the Help Authoring Guide (HAG) which I found on
Microsoft's Developer's Net CD-ROM. It is a mostly complete book
describing all the features available in the Windows 3.0 and 3.1 Help
systems. It also gives detailed explanations of how to create .HLP
files which make use of these features.

The book was in MS's MultiMedia file format. This is really a superset
of the Help system, which suggests all kinds of possibilities for
"scaling up" a .HLP file. In fact, you can view a .HLP file within the
MultiMedia Viewer (MMV.EXE). But the reason I bring it up is that I
could not extract the HAG from the wealth of other information in that
same MMV file.

So I copied and pasted the entire file into text, then reformatted it in
Word for Windows and created a .HLP file out of it, which seemed
reasonable and even a bit ironic.

After I did that and posted it to the WINSDK forum on CompuServe, MS was
convinced to post the .RTF files for the original book in the MSDNLIB
forum. So now you have options. You can download this file (presumably
you've already done that) and have an online reference, or you can
download WHAG.ZIP from MSDNLIB and print it out. It's around 800-900
pages, but it can be done.

One caveat on the whole thing: There yet remain a lot of graphics
missing from both the book version and the online version (both .MMV and
.HLP formats). Spaces were provided for the graphics, but the project
to create the book apparently ended before any of the graphics were
prepared. Thus, all references to Figure X-1 or "the illustration
below" will seem not to make sense at first.

Enjoy!
