Section 1 - Introduction/Forward

	Welcome to yet another stunning issue of GS E-Mag. I never really
thought this thing would get the kind of publicity and readership that it
did. It seems that the mag has spread all over and people are happy with
it. The first issue was just the basic introduction, and my purpose in it's
release was to advertise what I was trying to do, and to attain some writters
and contributors so that this thing doesn't take up too much of my free time.
If this is the first issue you've seen, then don't worry. Everything that
was found in issue #1 is right in here, along with a ton more. I'm not sure
as to the timespan of the releases. I'm just going to play it by ear, and
release the mag when there is enough articles and information.

	This magazine is dedicated to the underground dance music scene.
We cover everything from Ambient to Zoo Rave... from Acid House to UK House.
We got it all! If your an artist, DJ, rave organizer, or just a casual
event goer, this magazine will offer something to you. Although we are
trying to concentrate on the scene in Ontario, Canada, we do have several
international articles and contributions so i'm sure anyone will find at
least something that they need.

	I've had several people tell me that I should make this more
user friendly. They want me to program an interface, but i'm quite happy
with the way it is! It makes it more machine transportable, but if I get
alot of requests, I will consider the possibility.

	The articles and entries in this magazine are gathered from many
different sources. Most come from the internet and from private submitions
made by everyday people. If you are interested in being one of the many "guru"
contributors to this magazine, refer to SECTION 16 for details on how you can
be one of the celebrities of GS E-Mag! I'm sorry about the size of this issue,
it seems I under-estimated the users. Everyone is sending me mail and articles
to put in the mag. My mailbox has 700k a day worth of new GS messages. Next
package won't be as huge, I promise! If you are planning on printing this up,
it'll be about 45-50 pages long.

Section 2 - Letters to the Editor

Since this section has only been implemented in this issue, there is nothing
to put in here.

If you have a comment, concern or complement about this magazine, send it to
me via E-Mail (at one of my many addresses), or just pop it in an upload to
The Groove Sector BBS. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!! Check out Section 16 for
more information on how to get in contact with us.

MARIJUANA by Raven

I will not attempt to quote the 1,917-line NYC Bar Ass'n report which
denounces the so-called "War on Drugs", but I do recommend reading it.

My own little comment concerns one small sub-topic: the hypocrisy of
claiming that our national policy has ever truly been a "War on Drugs".

Sure, we spend lots of money, time, energy, manpower, and equipment
tracking down anyone who puffs on marijuana, to condemn them as vicious
dangerous criminals, end their careers and reputations, and lock them
up... but then we SUBSIDIZE with our tax dollars another smoking drug,
"more addictive than crack cocaine" (said Surgeon Geberal Koop), whose
subsidized profits run at least one state economy, and control a very
powerful U.S. Senator.

The most rabidly right-wing "Anti-Drug" warriors, like Sen. Jesse Helms,
are all too ready and willing to support the addictive drug market that
supplies their own profits -- the tobacco industry.

We ask other nations to help us stop drug production and exporting by
third world countries -- but we fight for our right to sell tobacco to
third world countries.

Does anyone still remember that in the last century our civilized West
fought a war against China to let US flood THEM with opium?

Has any mainsteam news agency yet publicly acknowledged the dirtiest
little secret of the Iran-Contra scandal? That while we were fussing
about the guns that went south to the Contras, those same planes were
making the return trip north loaded with cocaine? That this is why
the street price of cocaine dropped, even during the height of the
anti-drug campaign by Reagan/Bush?

Does anyone who cheers on the new law-and-order "Christian" candidate
for Senate, Oliver North, remember or care that this is the man who
used the National Security Council's authority to order the FBI/DEA
investigators not to inspect those returning planes? Or that North
deliberately blew the cover of DEA's informant Barry Seal, exposing
him to the cocaine smugglers who eventually killed him?

If we were ever going to be serious about "Warring" on addictive drugs,
we would have started by ending the subsidies, ousting the politicians
who supported them, and treating the betrayers of our laws and national
interests (like North) as just that.

As it is.... the same month we legalize marijuana, Senator Helms will
get a subsidy for R.J.Reynolds to grow enough crops to cover two states.

     ECSTACY - INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
     ==============================

	  The medical research for this article is taken in the
     main from one of the same title appearing in Encyclopedia
     Psychedelica by Dr. George Greer, and also from many other
     sources, including the practical experience of myself and
     others i have talked to. ** It is intended to help those
     who will take the drug to do so safely, not to encourage or
     condone casual use! **

		 MDMA SCIENCE
		 ------------

     3.4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA, or "E" is a psy-
     choactive (mind affecting) substance, usually found in the
     form of a white pill, with or without a small logo embossed
     upon it, but can also be found in liquid form, and "tab"
     form (a small square of paper soaked in liquid E). It has
     been shown to alleviate certain psychosomatic symptoms, and
     has also been demonstrated to help in the treatment of some
     mental illness, epilepsy, depression, etc.- under the guidance
     and supervision of expert therapists. However, as all
     research (official and otherwise) is banned throughout most
     of the Western world, no research on long-term use has been
     completed, although research is now being restarted in the
     USA, as well as LSD research in Switzerland.

	  As far as physical side effects go, no serious ones
     have been proved (from a single dose), any reported minor
     ones (e.g. wide pupils) going in a couple of days. However,
     some research has shown that upping the dose does not greatly
     increase the experience (i.e, take two and you won't necessarily
     feel twice as good, after about four it doesn't make much dif-
     ference, you are just incresing the risks of side-effects). It
     should not be taken by people with the following conditions;
     high blood pressure, heart disease, bouts of heart or circulation
     trouble (e.g. heart fibrillation or "flutters"), hyperthyroid
     conditions, sugar diabetis (mellitus), hyperglycaemia, glaucoma,
     diminished liver functioning, actual or possible pregnancy,
     or during breast feeding. Also, it should not be taken with
     anti-hystamine or bronchial treatments for hay fever or asthma
     (including cold cures), diet pills, caffeine, and above all Beta-
     blockers. It would also be wise to avoid use at the same time as
     anti-depressants, as well as other psychoactive drugs.

	  Psychologically, if you have suffered from any mental
     problems in the past, including panic attacks, avoid E. If not,
     reoccurence of the symptoms can occur (called an "E panic").
     ** Most importantly, be mentally ready for anything, turn off
     your mind, and don't try to fight it because you can't! **
     For this reason, NEVER EVER spike someones drink with E (or any
     other mind altering drug - people have been admitted to hospital
     after hallucinating vividly from being spiked with marijuana), as
     if you are not ready for it, it can induce a panic with can lead
     to heart failure, even if the person has taken it in the past,
     with no ill effects.

	  Possible side-effects include tightening of muscles
     (especially the jaw muscles), exhaustion following the expe-
     rience for one or two days after, the urge to vomit, shivering,
     sweating, speech impediments, rolling eyes, widening of the
     pupils, walking difficulties, nervous blinking, headache,
     fainting, distorted vision and geometric visual hallucinations.
     Blood sugar levels, pulse rate and blood pressure may rise or
     fall and the ability to withstand pain are also reported(a friend
     of mine stubbed out a fag on his finger and didn't realise until
     the day after). Emotionally, the main side effects can be
     anxiety, depression, lack of concentration or constructive
     thoughts altogether, which can all occur during or after a
     session.

		 PERSONAL E ADVICE - TAKING E
		 ----------------------------

     1: NEVER DRINK ALCOHOL WITH E!!!!!! That's how people die
     from it, usually from either dehydration or heart failure.

     2: Take it with people you can trust, your best friends.

     3: Drink water to stop dehydrating, and if at a rave take a
     break from the dancing every hour or so for 10 minutes, or
     you risk total body fatigue or heart failure.

     4: Drink a pint of milk or eat some dairy products the day
     after, as E takes calcium from the body, and prolonged use
     (every weekend for a year or two) has been reported to
     induce brittle bone disease. Also, don't arrange to have
     your grandmother round for tea as you may well not feel in
     the mood. If possible, stay with the people you took it with
     the day after, to "come down" nicely and talk about it.

		 PERSONAL E ADVICE - GETTING E
		 -----------------------------

     1: IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL OR SUPPLY E IN THE UK, AND MOST OF
     THE REST OF EUROPE. IN THE UK IT IS A "CLASS A" DRUG, THE
     SAME AS HEROIN. Whether right or wrong, this is the law,
     and YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

     2: E is more dodgy now than ever before, it is hardly ever
     pure MDMA these days, and is often pure MDA, which is more
     harmful to the body. Some E's (such as some "Lovehearts")
     are cut with Ketamine, which can be found in pure form as
     "Disco Biscuits" - this stuff is generally thought of as
     nasty; effects can include total paralysation at high doses,
     as well as paranoia, rolling of the eyes, inability to speak
     or do much else except sit there off your face, really - not
     very nice. Some E's, often having the word "brown" in their
     name, are cut with heroin ("brown" being slang for H),
     sometimes referred to as "smack E's". They are becoming
     increasingly common in the UK. Some are also cut with Speed,
     LSD or Cocaine.

	  So basically, if you are going to try E, buy it off
     someone you know or a type that has been recommended by a
     friend - but beware, E's of the same name can often change
     in ingredients from batch to batch, the first often being
     good quality to gain a reputation, the subsequent batches
     being crap.

		 THE FINAL WORD
		 --------------

	  In summary, look after yourself, 'cos the dealer cer-
     tainly won't! Don't drink alcohol on it, try to drink a
     pint of water an hour if at a rave and dancing, and take a
     break every now and then, and you should be OK. Hundreds of
     thousands of people in the UK alone have had blinding times
     on the drug, and their have also been a handful of reports
     of E-related deaths, but if you follow these instructions
     the possible harmful effects should be minimised - but be
     prepared for suprises, 'cos every E is different and you
     never really know what is in that pill. It may even be stlg15
     worth of aspirin!

	  If you want to read up on E some more, "E For Ecstacy"
     by Nicholas Saunders is widely available in the UK and is
     impartial and unsensationalised. It also has a lovely glittery
     cover, and costs about eight pounds, so you and some mates
     could club together and buy it.

			 MARIJUANA MYTHS
			  by Paul Hager
	     Hoosier Cannabis Re-legalization Coalition

1. Marijuana causes brain damage

The most celebrated study that claims to show brain damage
is the rhesus monkey study of Dr. Robert Heath, done in the late
1970s. This study was reviewed by a distinguished panel of
scientists sponsored by the Institute of Medicine and the
National Academy of Sciences. Their results were published under
the title, Marijuana and Health in 1982. Heath's work was
sharply criticized for its insufficient sample size (only four
monkeys), its failure to control experimental bias, and the
misidentification of normal monkey brain structure as "damaged".
Actual studies of human populations of marijuana users have shown
no evidence of brain damage. For example, two studies from 1977,
published in the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA) showed no evidence of brain damage in heavy users of
marijuana. That same year, the American Medical Association
(AMA) officially came out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana.
That's not the sort of thing you'd expect if the AMA thought
marijuana damaged the brain.

2. Marijuana damages the reproductive system

This claim is based chiefly on the work of Dr. Gabriel
Nahas, who experimented with tissue (cells) isolated in petri
dishes, and with researchers who dosed animals with near-lethal
amounts of cannabinoids (i.e., the intoxicating part of
marijuana). Nahas' generalizations from his petri dishes to
human beings have been rejected by the scientific community as
being invalid. In the case of the animal experiments, the
animals that survived their ordeal returned to normal within 30
days of the end of the experiment. Studies of actual human
populations have failed to demonstrate that marijuana adversely
affects the reproductive system.

3. Marijuana is a "gateway" drug -- it leads to hard drugs

This is one of the more persistent myths. A real world
example of what happens when marijuana is readily available can
be found in Holland. The Dutch functionally decriminalized
marijuana in the 1970s. Since then, hard drug use -- heroin and
cocaine -- have DECLINED substantially. Even use of marijuana
has declined. If marijuana really were a gateway drug, one would
have expected use of hard drugs to have gone up. Actual studies
of hard drug "addicts" reveal that they start with alcohol or
tobacco more frequently than marijuana.

4. Marijuana suppresses the immune system

Like the studies claiming to show damage to the reproductive
system, this myth is based on studies where animals were given
extremely high doses of cannabinoids. These results have never
been duplicated in human beings. Interestingly, two studies done
in 1978 and one done in 1988 showed that hashish and marijuana
may have actually stimulated the immune system in the people
studied.

5. Marijuana is much more dangerous than tobacco

Smoked marijuana contains more carcinogens than does an
equivalent amount of tobacco (1.5 to 3 times). Marijuana,
however, unlike tobacco, actually dilates (enlarges) the air
passages in the lungs which promotes self-cleaning. This is one
reason why cannabis has been found useful in the past in treating
asthmatics. It should be remembered that a heavy tobacco smoker
consumes much more tobacco than a heavy marijuana smoker consumes
marijuana. Two other factors are important. The first is that
paraphernalia laws directed against marijuana users make it
difficult to smoke safely. These laws make water pipes and
bongs, which filter some of the carcinogens out of the smoke,
illegal and, hence, unavailable. The second is that, if
marijuana were legal, it would be more economical to have
cannabis drinks like bhang (a traditional drink in the Middle
East) or tea which are totally non-carcinogenic. This is in
stark contrast with "smokeless" tobacco products like snuff which
can cause cancer of the mouth and throat. Nicotine itself is
very toxic in even small quantities. In contrast, the
cannabinoids are relatively non-toxic. When all of these facts
are taken together, it can be clearly seen that the reverse is
true: marijuana is much SAFER than tobacco.

6. Legal marijuana would cause carnage on the highways

Although marijuana, when used to intoxication, does impair
performance in a manner similar to alcohol, actual studies of the
effect of marijuana on the automobile accident rate suggest that
it poses LESS of a hazard than alcohol. When a random sample of
fatal accident victims was studied, it was initially found that
marijuana was associated with RELATIVELY as many accidents as
alcohol. In other words, the number of accident victims
intoxicated on marijuana relative to the number of marijuana
users in society gave a ratio similar to that for accident
victims intoxicated on alcohol relative to the total number of
alcohol users. However, a closer examination of the victims
revealed that around 85% of the people intoxicated on marijuana
WERE ALSO INTOXICATED ON ALCOHOL. For people only intoxicated on
marijuana, the rate was much lower than for alcohol alone. This
would suggest that legal marijuana would not pose as serious a
hazard as legal alcohol.

NOTE: We of the HCRC believe that DUI laws pertaining to
driving under the influence of alcohol should apply to driving
under the influence of marijuana. We believe in the RESPONSIBLE
USE of marijuana, NOT IRRESPONSIBLE ABUSE.

7. Marijuana "flattens" human brainwaves

This is an out-and-out lie perpetrated by the Partnership
for a Drug-Free America. A few years ago, they ran a TV ad that
purported to show, first, a normal human brainwave, and second, a
flat brainwave from a 14-year-old "on marijuana". When
researchers called up the TV networks to complain about this
commercial, the Partnership had to pull it from the air. It
seems that the Partnership faked the flat "marijuana brainwave".
In reality, marijuana has the effect of slightly INCREASING alpha
wave activity. Alpha waves are associated with meditative and
relaxed states which are, in turn, often associated with human
creativity.

8. Marijuana impairs short-term memory

This is true but misleading. When one is intoxicated on
alcohol, one's motor control is affected. When one is
intoxicated on marijuana, one's concentration is affected. Any
impairment of short-term memory disappears when one is no longer
intoxicated. Often, the short-term memory effect is paired with
a reference to Dr. Heath's poor rhesus monkeys to imply that the
condition is permanent.

9. Marijuana lingers in the body like DDT

This is also true but misleading. Cannabinoids are fat
soluble as are innumerable nutrients and, yes, some poisons like
DDT. For example, the essential nutrient, Vitamin A, is fat
soluble but one never hears people who favor marijuana
prohibition making this comparison.

10. There are over a thousand chemicals in marijuana smoke

Again, true but misleading. The 31 August 1990 issue of the
magazine Science notes that of the over 800 volatile chemicals
present in roasted COFFEE, only 21 have actually been tested on
animals and 16 of these cause cancer in rodents. Yet, coffee
remains legal and is generally considered fairly safe.

Editorial on MDMA by Will Penna (wpenna@cruzio.com)

While MDMA has less potential for abuse and "destroying
people's lives" than methamphetamines do, such potential
*is* realized and I have on several occasions encountered
it in friends and acquaintances over the years. To really
consider this subject seriously, look into Bruce Eisner's
text on Ecstasy, it's the standard in the field, either the
first or sefdond edition (Saunders' book is interesting, but
it tends to be rambly and long on interesting narratives
rether than based on as much useful info).

To cite just two areas: people who, liking the E experience,
attempt to "stay there" by continuing to take E regularly
have burned themselves out physically and psychologically,
needing extended periods for recuperation. The most intense
E trippers I know have had to take extended times for re-
integrating themselves in their relationships, day-to-day
lives, healtthy routines, etc., and for a few that I have
know over a 15 year period their E use *may* have been a
factor in their suicide. For others who have not integrated
the E experience it remains something that they do not bring
into their everyday life so there is more spiritual and/or
emotional disharmony in their interactions with others; these
are the folks that are groovy on E and more edgy, nervy or
even less capable of intimacy than they were before when they're
not on E.

Again, my experience over a 15 year period has been much like thos
in Adamson's (Metzner's) Gateway to the Heart book about MDMA:
that for the vast majority of E-takers it was a path, trail,
or autobahn lane to heart chakra interconnects--and I remAIN CON-
vinced that that is what it is for most ecstasy seekers.

     As noted, a primary psychological effect of MDMA is to make the user feel
"safe", at peace with the world, pleasantly reconciled to things as they are,
and things however they will be. This can remarkably diminish one's ability to
make sound judgements during the session. Examples:

- It becomes easy to want to prolong the MDMA state by taking more and more of
the drug (or of other drugs), beyond what you would judge wise or worthwhile
when not under its influence.

- It becomes easier to have unsafe sex. You may "forget," judge that the risk
of infection is very small, or feel that infection wouldn't be such a terrible
thing after all. If you think you might have sex while on MDMA, it may help
you and your partner to stay safe if you lay out safer sex supplies before
dosing in a place you'll be sure to see them later, and agree beforehand that
you'll use them if the occasion arises.

     Another danger stems from MDMA's lessening of the awareness of pain
(whether through chemical analgesia, or through psychological analgesia).
Combined with the extra energy the drug gives, it becomes easy to sustain
bruises, blisters, or other bodily damage from extensive dancing, hiking,
climbing, etc., without noticing it until after the damage is done.

     Under MDMA, it may seem "right" to make immediate changes in relationships
(increasing or decreasing commitment) of all kinds. The fresh points of view
appreciated during an MDMA session are one of the drug's most prized benefits,
but it is probably unwise to actually make lasting relationship changes until
you have a chance to see how you would feel about them after the drug and its
afterglow wear off.

The Thompson Vocal Eliminator (TVE)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This article is on the Thompson Vocal Eliminator (from now referred to as
the TVE).  The Thompson Vocal Eliminator was first invented in 1976 a man
by the name of Lacy Thompson Jr.
What this hardware basically is a piece of hardware that is integrated into
your current system.  It takes stereo input, and give mono-stereo output.
The remarkable thing about this equipment is that it rips the vocals out
in the process, and leaves the background music.  Now, all of you DJ's and
wannabe tape producers are thinking, WICKED!  Well yeah, it is, although
it has many uses, the obvious one is that it lets you rip beats out of the
best songs/mixes/etc.  Which in turn can be used as your own background
music.
The hardware accepts any format from tape, record, CD, MD (miniDisC), FM
stereo, TV, Satellite, HiFi VCR, MTS VCR + anything that can produce
stereo output.
Generally, the best results are produced from CD due to the fact that it
is a digital recording process, and minor defects which are present in
the other forms are absent in this source.  Next is records (12"s), and
then tape.
The TVE is also upgradable in a way that is rare to non-existant currently.
You can just plug in new ROM chips!  Basically, noise reduction (DNR), Bass
addition, leveling, etc. are all algorithms, and instead of hardwiring them,
their on ROM chips, so when the user wants a better method, you just buy the
$10-20 dollar chip instead of the whole hardware.
HOW IT WORKS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~

What the program basically does is compares the two stereo channels (L & R)
and takes out everything that present in BOTH. Almost 99%, the vocals are
present on both, thus cancelling them. The problem arises then that most
instruments are present on both channels as well. But the TVE compensates
for this, and generally you get atleast 50% vocal removal to 99% . If your
a perfectionist, all you gotta do is run another beat on top, and yer set.

If your interested in this equipment, contact LT Sound @ (404) 482-4836 7am
-7pm EST Mon-Fri, Sat 1pm-5pm. Just ask for their information package, with
the demo tape. In about a week or two, you will get the information, plus
a demo tape that shows the TVE in effect. If even this doesn't convince you,
you can actually send them your own tapes, and they'll rip the vocals off of
them and send you a demo, with YOUR OWN MATERIAL. They also pay for the send-
ing and recieving of your tapes, as well as the demo.

PRICING:
~~~~~~~
Ok, their are various models available, the low end one, which basically just
rips vocals, straightforward, and doesn't have extra things.  It will work with
records, CD, etc. but not Tape.  It goes for $495.00 but is on special till
August 21, 1994 for $389.00
The next model does do tapes, and everything else.  It has everything that you
could hope for, and includes all the little 'perks'.  This is true professional
quality shit, and quite cheap.  It also has integrated DSP (Digital signal
processing).  It goes for 1,285.00 but is also on sale till August 21 for
$889.00.
The Highest, best quality, system, which was strictly designed for top of the
line vocal work, which not only rips the original vocals, but also works with
the vocals that you may want to add.  It has professional delay and reverb
so you can make just about anybody's voice sound like anybody else's!
Breaking the soundbarrier! Are Protective Ear Plugs the way of the Future?
<Sean Casey>:
Tinnitus is what happens when the sound is WAY TOO LOUD and you don't
a handy pair of 24+ db reduction earplugs to make everything sound
nice and muffled. The next day or three one's ears ring. It is a sign
of hearing damage.
Try this test: Don't go to an event for three weeks. Find an ultra
quiet environment and listen. Do your ears ring? Permanent hearing
damage.
What a lot of promoters haven't figured out is: louder isn't better.
Louder sounds like shit, reverberates too much indoors, and causes the
smarter participants to wear earplugs, which means it sounds even
shittier.
What I'd like to see them do at big events is:
      Raise the high speakers above the crowd (and point them down) so
      that speaker-worshipers don't block the sound. Treble beams out
      narrowly; it won't go around someone standing in front of a bin.
      (Try it.) All that money you spent on the mid-high bins is
      actually spent on the few people standing in front of the
      speakers.
      Remove at least 1/2 of the sound system. SHREDDER 60,000 WATTS.
      You walk in and it sounds like you're standing between two train
      locomotives at full throttle. The pattern recognition in your
      brain goes into overdrive trying to find a beat in the clipped
      off waveforms and the multiple bass echoes and fails. You've
      been shredded.
      Use a limiter and set it so that the amps don't clip and the
      volume is below earplug level.
The first one is a little hard. You gotta stack the bass bins and
stack a mid-high on top. Might even need a sandbag or something to aim
it down.
The second will probably save anywhere from $500 to $2000.
A good stereo compressor/limiter is about $500.
And the whole thing would sound better. You'd be getting reviews like:
"It sounded really good!" and "I met God." And you could smile about
it later knowing no one's hearing was damaged. :)
<Resonate>:
	The only events I have been to where the sound was not damaging
	have been SFRave events. I find that almost 100% of all concerts
	and rave type events I have ever been to have poorly run overly loud
	sound. The sound "engineers" at these shows are probably long gone
	for concert deafness and couldn't effectively set up and run
	sound anyways.
	If you *always* wear 24db+ earplugs then you will find that your
	mind adjusts to this level of volume reduction and that the sound
	is *great*. Its just like your eyes adjusting to dim light in a room.
	You will be able to pick out the components of the sound and enjoy
	it much more if you have earplugs on.
	For those of you who *never* wear earplugs- it will take you several
	sessions to get used to the reduced level and have your mind adjust
	but it is worth it.
	Okay a number of common things have been said about earplugs:
	1) Wearing earplugs doesn't sound good. The sound is muffled and
	   and I just don't get that *loud* feeling.
	The mind and ear are a trainable duo. If you *always* wear earplugs
	and you *pay attention* to the music you listen to then your senses
	will adjust to the shift in EQ and *compensate* and it will sound
	just fine. The only exception to this rule is if you are so deaf
	already that all of the relevant damagable frequency reception
	in your ears is gone- then earplugs will do nothing for you unless
	you are at an event with damaging sound in different frequencies-
	like a missile launch or an SRL show or an atomic blast.
	2) I like to take off my earplugs once in a while because I want
	   that *loud* sensation.
	See #1. If you take them off then you lose the tuning your brain
	has been working on to adjust to the EQ.
	3) Which frequences to earplugs really knock out? How many dbspl
	   do they remove?
	dbspl = decibels sound pressure level. I prefer the generic
	flourescent green thrify earplugs. These are made by the Super301
	company in the South Bay. They take down *30dbspl* of sound. There
	is no concert you can attend that has sound loud enough to damage
	your hearing if you have 30db earplugs in.
	They knock out mostly high and mid frequences. The bass shines
	through and of course you body feels it. Again your mind WILL
	compensate for the EQ shift if you *listen*. IF YOU *LISTEN*!!!!!
	4) I'm a DJ and I can't mix with earplugs in.
	If you truly consider yourself an artist you will make sure you
	have the right tool for the job: good ears. Learn do deal with
	earplugs. Don't be a Pete Townshend and suffer for 50% of your
	life in great pain every time you hear music.
	If any of you have any questions that need more exact frequency
	measurements- I can provide them.
	Oh and you can substitute the word "condom" for "earplug" and
	re-read the whole schpiel and its still valid.
	Anyone who doesn't wear earplugs at events *does* have hearing
	damage and it *will* get worse throughout your life. If you get
	tinnitus (ringing) you will be in tremendous agony and it is
	*incurable*.
	Wear earplugs.
<Bryce Ryan>:
As a sound person, the single most frequent comment and request i
receive when working with the equipment is: "Can you make it any louder?"
It's really quite a difficult issue for me, in a way, because i
want to give people what they want.  However, i like my hearing,
and am exposed to much higher SPLs for longer periods of time than almost
anyone else in the rave "scene", so i almost always answer "NO".
i have seen many a DJ who turns everything up to distortion levels
(and beyond), and still wants it turned up, up, up, and up, because
they are (whether they know it or not) deaf.  i have warned folks
here before about permanent hearing loss.  What most folks don't
realize is that most of damaging sound energy comes from the mids and
the highs...having a flat frequency response curve on the sound
system produces deafening levels in the mids and especially the highs.
This is because the smaller the speaker, the more efficient they are
(the magnets move smaller distances, and are smaller, so the same
amount of electrical energy produces higher SPLs at higher frequencies).
If sound people put most of the system's energy into the bass bins,
and EQ'd their systems properly (and listened to them), there'd be
far less problems with "too much sound".  it's also a square law kind
of thing...twice the energy can produce 4 times the SPL.
It is precisely this problem of improperly tuned and monitored systems
that causes most of my problems when listening to the so-called wailing
diva school of house music.  an improperly tuned system reinforces the
mids and highs far too much.  since the sound of the human voice,
especially alto and soprano voices falls mostly in the 1KHz-5KHz range,
when these are reinforced by an improperly tuned sound system, the
"diva's" voice reaches 6-12dB over the rest of the system, which goes
from being a sound on the edge of painfully loud to well beyond that
level...and my ears feel it.  i *like* hearing the human voice on
sound systems, but if every time it's played on a big system, my ears
lose a little more hearing, and hurt me, i develop an aversion reaction
to the sound.
As a representative of both Sound Vision and Metro Vision, i'd like to
take this opportunity to tell you all that if you're at an event where
we are doing the sound (ethan or i), and the sound is too loud for you,
or in some way unpleasant, *please* let us know immediately, and we'll
take care of it.  we love our hearing, and we love yours.  we'd like
to be offering sound services for a long time, and we'd like to preserve
ours and your hearing.  we take this stuff very seriously.  also, if you
do events, and want advice or counsel on proper setup and tuning of the
system you are using, please feel free to contact us...we want to make
sure the community at large retains the ears by which we hear each other's
unique voices.
PAGANS AND PATRIOTS
by Gigi Bisson
Contributing Writer, Metro
Copyright 1993. Distributed with permission of author.
We're going to singe, parch, smoulder, simmer, deep fry, and burn to a crisp
in one of the world's largest frying pans.  We're traveling East to find the
West.  A lonely and lawless frontier, so uncharted and undesirable that you
can do whatever you damn well please.
 Along with a flock of techno pagans, nature-lovers, hippies, full-moon
crazies, performance artists and ravers from the Silicon Valley, San
Francisco, and Los Angeles we made the eight-hour pilgrimage to the northwest
Nevada desert.  My travel partner, partly for shock value, partly for reality
check,  announces our plans to strangers.
"We're going to the Black Rock desert to watch a group of people burn a
40-foot tall wooden man. You heard of it?" he asks waitresses and gas
attendants.
"Are they a bunch of satanists?"
"Sounds like that horror movie, 'The Wicker Man.'"
"Is that some sort of religious festival?"
We didn't even mention the 30-foot fiberglass dachsund head, stolen from a
Doggie Diner restaurant in San Francsco, hauled out there on a flatbed truck
and crowned with a ring of glowing neon.  The man was wierd enough. The very
idea of building a magnificent four-story effigy and burning it to a crisp.
An hour out of Reno, we climb over the Sierras. The land dries up and
flattens out, turns from green to gold to brown to beige. In Gerlach,
 outpost of bars, slot machines and taxidermy shops, we stop for ice.
  Stuffed bighorn sheep, coyote, fox and mountain lion line the highway.   I
glance at the official Burning Man topographic map.  Like the Cancer scare on
a cigarettes pack, a rectangle in the corner reads:
"WARNING: Black Rock Desert may be hazardous to your health. Vehicles may
become mired in unconsolidated terrain.  Should you stray from the path,
remember: Help is NOT around the corner.  People have died here."
"Do not rely on your odometer or compass. All objects -- humans, cars, our
encampment -- drastically diminish in the scale of the desert.  Lights array
themselves in random and confusing patterns.  Any point may be four, 40 or
should you happen to fix on a star, 400 billion miles distant."
The Black Rock Desert, a prehistoric lakebed that forms the largest flat
expanse in North America stretches to our right. In the distance, spectacular
plumes of dust rise twenty feet above the surface and streak East across the
playa like jet exhaust.   We see a tiny black-lettered cardboard sign:
"BURNING MAN ---->"
They say if you were placed in a dark, silent room and all stimulation was
removed, you would begin to hallucinate within an hour. It's the principle
behind a flotation tank. It's principle behind the desert.
A black van ahead of us skirts the horizon, disappears into a mirage of heat
haze, hovers and then shrinks into a black sphere that floats above the sand.
Dust plumes streak across the hard-packed white alkaline dust lined with a
fine lacework of cracks. As far as the eye can see. Nothing. Not even a
tumbleweed. Then barren violet mountains in the distance.  We floor it, and
streak across the desert at 70 miles per hour.
Suddenly, we see BLACK ROCK TRAUMA CENTER, an egg-shaped aluminum trailer,
with bones, kerosene lamps and feathers dangling from the door. A sign warns
that broadcast media will be taping this event. A craggy hippie in a cowboy
hat asks us for our $40 registration fee and directs us on the last part of
our journey.
"Stake everything down. We had 40 mph winds yesterday. And at night, watch
out for the acid heads driving 90 miles an hour without headlights on, man,"
he says.
 The camp shimmers in the distance. Desert Navigational Locators, a series of
eight sculptures made by William Binzen of rusting potato mashers and
institutional egg beaters, form gateways marking a compass of four
directions. This inner circle is surrounded by an outer circle of vans, land
yachts, Airstream trailers, candy-colored nylon domes and Port-o-Potties.
A hollow conch-shaped mud sculpture by Pepe Lauzan rises dramatically to the
South, the neon-haloed Dog Head marks the West. And on an axis exactly 15
degrees North of due East, the Burning Man lies in state, with the largest
blank canvas in North America behind him.  Up close and personal, he's a puny
framework of plywood, glued and stapled together.  Like Cher or Madonna, the
icon seems larger in photographs.
Invite 1,000 of America's most helplessly urban people on a  camping trip to
America's most forbidding wilderness, and this is what you get. Sweltering in
black leather with no words like "dehydration" or "sunstroke" in their
vocabulary, staggering barefoot, swigging cappuccino.  Women dance topless
and men wear skirts, oblivious to the threat of sunburn.
They transform Nevada desert into California beach. Just add water. An
"Arabian shiek" wearing a cloak fashioned from designer sheets pedals
aimlessly on a mountain bike.  People circle listlessly in ATVs, dune
buggies, tricycles, skateboards, rollerskates, scooters. A guy skims across
the playa in a deranged landsailer: a four-wheeled plastic horse with a
windsail. Four guys in turbans slumber in a striped tent with a bank of
panels to run the solar refrigerator.
It's soon apparent that the well-intentioned schedule in the brochure is part
mirage as well. A vaguely African head made of chicken wire, scrap lumber and
copper sheeting marks the center of town.  The "cafe" turns out to be a
Monkey Bean Espresso truck.  A press truck holds a Macintosh computer, a
laser printer, a Xerox photocopier.  A truck topped with antennas and loaded
with high tech equipment forms the pirate radio station, but when we tune
into 89.9 FM, nothing but irritating feedback hum materializes.
The temporal community gathers around a message board near the
satellite-dish-topped Greyhound bus in the center. In the early days, the
bedrock of support came from the Cacaphony Society, a group of anarchic
performance artists and costumers.  Louis Brill, a Cacaphony member,
overlapped the event into another group, YLEM (pronounced eye-lem) an
organization of artists using science and technology that includes Dr.
Clifford Pickover of the IBM Thomas Watson Research Laboratory, and Roger
Malina of the Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics on its board of
advisors.
Flyers are posted for other organizations that now converge here, each with
its own interpretation of the desert. A nature group called Outdoors
Unlimited, a group of conservationationists known as the Desert Survivors, an
Activist BBS. (If you accept the "Official Version " of anything, you are a
danger to yourself and humanity. Call for the latest on FBI, CIA, KGB, DEA,
KKK, FOIA, INS, IRS, JFK, MLK.")  A want ad bluntly advertises the desires of
at least one of the ravers and Deadheads present: "I'm looking for some
'Shrooms. Anybody want to sell some?"
In the afternoon heat, thermals rise and cause dust devils -- swirling
dervishes of dust that spiral like tiny tornados across the sand.  Winds of
40 miles per hour suddenly rip tarps and shade awnings.  It's miserable. You
can't even keep the dirt out of your beer.
Every third resident of Black Rock seems to be making a documentary.  I've
been out of the car for less than half an hour when a man thrusts a mike into
my face.
"I'm just looking for the definitive statement on what this all means," he
asks.
I'm too drained by the stifling heat to mumble something about a strange
succession of mirrors.
We are the burning man. Everything becomes performance art. We suspend
disblief when we walk into the theater.  A tent called The Oasis sports an
indoor recirculating water fountain decorated with plastic snakes.  I tour
the Christmas Tent, strewn with tinsel and garlands. The hostess invites me
to visit later for eggnog, caroling and fruitcake.  Chrismas Muzak is piped
throughout the village and a guy in a red and green kilt and a Santa in a
cotton beard pass out candy canes.
When the sun sinks into gold, crimson and orange, and a huge yellow moon
rises, the playa cools and settles into a surrealistic neon Las Vegas
carnival.  Various sculptures are ignited and sacrificed.   The doghead is
rimmed with stagelights, the generators hum, and it's transformed into a
stage alive with a halo of neon.
Dozens of people line up, and tug of war-style, raise the man. Suddenly, his
hollow body is outlined in a dazzling skeleton of glowing blue neon framed in
a fuselage that seems, in the mirage of light, to be a wire-framed,
computer-generated graphic.  His head, a faceless kite-shaped Japanese paper
lantern, is aglow with blue.  Standing on the low horizon, he takes on a
prodigous proportion.  With the aid of technology, a lone man in the
wilderness is suddenly visible for miles.
A Lost In Space fashion show features "shapes that time forgot."  A throbbing
circle of drummers, people playing tubas, horns, pots and pans forms, and the
costumed dance one by one. An alien, a teradactyl skeleton, a grim reaper or
two, dance in the center, ringed with popping flashbulbs.
Recognizing the succession of mirrors, someone yells: "Hey, let's get the
video guys in here." Suddenly, a dozen videographers, including the PBS crew,
a super 8 camera, and a guy with a bizarre handmade video camera encased in
an aluminum box, bob in the circle, filming each other.
Time for the "Fire Tree" sculpture/performance: A bonfire is lit inside the
mud-covered shell.  Flames shoot out of the top, which looks like a hollow
glove stretched skyward.  The crowd whoops and chants, drumming, and
spinning. While standing near the center of the mud volcano, one of the
sculptors is nearly sacrificed as the tree colapses on to itself and flames
shoot out of its cracked molten fingers.
People gather and stare into a neon crop circle, 50 feet in diameter of
glowing red, blue and green broadcasting to some distant UFO in the night
sky. A confused dog stumbles on the circle and is electrified, but not
sacrificed.
At midnight, a rave begins a half mile north of camp.  Follow the strobe
light. The night turns to Burning Jam.
The Burning Man is the creation of Larry Harvey, who specifically disavows
any spiritual meaning, yet speaks fervently about the Man.  Eight years ago,
Harvey was looking for a way to cheer himself up after a relationship broke
up.  On a whim, he decided to burn a wooden man on the San Francisco beach
during summer solstice.  He called his friend, carpenter Jerry James, and
they knocked together an eight-foot-tall figure, gathered a dozen friends on
the beach, and burned it.  The sight of the man, arms blazing against the
night sky was far more moving than they anticipated.  Each year the Man grew
larger. By the fifth year, the police arrived in time to stop the burning,
and nearly caused a riot.
They moved the Man away from the law, to the Black Rock Desert.  "Life seems
infinitely precious against that cosmically vast waste," Harvey says.
 "Everything that is, is more intensely so."
 The Burning Man finally broke even last year, and Harvey reputedly hopes to
eventually make a living off the festival.  He talks of adding to the
spectacle next year, including Laser lights and a Tesla coil generating
man-made lightning.
"We're primal technology. The ritual is derived directly from technical
requirements, and the logic of engineering the Man," Harvey says.  Last year,
he was invited to exhibit a slide show of the Burning Man at Cyberarts in Los
Angeles.  "A lot of cyberpeople come here,"  he says.
The growth is a point of contention among the old timers, including Binzen,
who feels the festival has grown dangerously large.  Now the Bureau of Land
Management is demanding $2 per head as rent.
In response, Binzen started Desert Siteworks, a more personal,
invitation-only performance work that focuses on ritual and art.   "As you
get more deeply into ritual, you relate to the movements of the desert,
working with desert navigation, creating alignments and time-based
performances," he says, talking of car lights creating patterns on the playa,
processions of candles, Stonehenge-like arrangements of sculpture mapped to
the heavens, and sand drawings that work as a matrix that helps us understand
how we fit into the cosmos.
***
The rising sun emerges from the Man's outspread legs. As the day progresses,
it traverses his spine, and exits through the top of his head. Sunday begins
with the Ancient Rite of the Java Cow.  When all the cups have been filled at
the Miraculous and Ever-Flowing Udder, the Cow addresses the crowd with her
ritual greeting: " Do you want cream and sugar with your coffee?" and the
congregation responds as one: "No we want it black."
We hear of a hot spring, and with vague directions, head East past the Man,
toward the imposing Black Rock on the horizon, speeding away from the
anarchic urban madness and back into nowhere.  Ten, maybe 20 miles away,
across the railroad tracks, we sink into Trego Hot Springs, a warm creek
surrounded with vibrant green grass.  Naked bodies slick with sulphurous
black mud crackle in the sun.
Remnants from Desert Siteworks litter the springs -- a semicircle of
descending railroad ties called "Woodhenge," and posts topped with sculptural
faces.  We continue on to Bordello Springs, a pristine pool surrounded by a
lone clump of trees and lush asparagus ferns.
Here, the lawless soak together.  A man dressed in khaki unbuckles his gun
holster and slips in.  A guy from Boulder Creek with two pierced nipples
tells me about the loaded shotgun he found a few yards away.  "I'm thinking
of burning it with the man tonight. Or maybe I'll keep it," he says.  A group
of model rocketeers describe a 15-foot rocket, mislaunched this morning, that
shot back into the playa.  It's now buried eight feet under, and they're
trying to figure out how to extract $2,000 worth of metal from the hardpan
alkali.   A couple of guys called Desert Rats swagger in, one carrying an
automatic rifle.  A guy from Oregon asks if he can fire it, and suddenly, the
desert quiet is punctured with Ramboesque gunfire.
By the time we head out, angry clouds gather on the mountains.  Thunder
rumbles. Racing toward the camp, racing against the dwindling light, we're
suddenly adrift in a horizonless white ocean.  Clouds hide the stars.  My
compass points West, but we forget how far South we drove.
This is the widest unpatrolled highway in North America.  It's nothing
compared to the 3,500,000 square miles of arridity that make up the Sahara,
but the 1,000 square mile Black Rock Desert ranks as one of top 30 deserts on
earth. Explored by John Charles Fremont in the 1840s on his way to the Santa
Clara Valley, and crossed by the historic Applegate-Lassen Trail, the route
of the 49ers, some sections are apparently littered at 50-foot intervals with
 the graves of infants who died when pioneer wagon trains lost in the winter
snows.  The warning rattles my brain: "People have died here."
 For an hour we race around in circles, heading toward hazy encampments that
appear and disappear on the horizon.  Finally, a flare shoots up in the
Southwest, and race toward it, knowing that the man will burst into flames
any minute now.  Finally, we see it, a blue haze, and the man begins to grow.
We screech to a halt behind the man. The crowd has swelled and tripled, and
white lights creep toward him from all directions as locals risk the night
drive to witness the spectacle.
The crowd writhes to the steady drumbeat in evening gowns, tuxedos, feathered
Mardi Gras costumes, masks, Cyalume light sticks, LEDs and bare skin. Last
year, Brewster Kahle, a WAIS, inc. employee, exchanged wedding vows with his
wife
 while the man burned.
One by one, people volunteer to strip off their shirts and a woman in a
feathered headdress douses them with alcohol and torches their bodies.  A man
and woman rise and shoot flaming arrows into the man's loins.  The drumming
rises, the crowd whoops and hollers in an inebriated frenzy.  It's every bit
as tribal, pagan and halucinatory as Mardi Gras, Carnival, a Grateful Dead
concert. Torchbearers touch the man with flares and WHOOOSH! he's human
effigy flambe.
Loaded with cheap fireworks, and popping neon tubes, the man starts to
explode. He colapses on his back, and a flurry of sparks drift in the sky.
 People begin jumping over the Man, and a woman slips and falls into the
embers, her dress bursting into flames.
Lightening ripples like a Tesla coil cranked by a speed-crazed organ grinder,
bright as daylight. The Man is upstaged by a circle of raw electricity.  Rain
pelts us, turning the dust into tenacious clay and a dust storm whips up,
dumps baby powder from the heavens and blots the scene with a whiteout.
 Nature bats last.
"You're gonna turn white," a man standing by a truck covered with CB antennas
says.  A local, he owns a ranch and opal mine to the north.  "There are
probably police infiltrators in this crowd," he says. "The FBI and DEA's
probably here." He tells tales of drug-laden airplanes landing in the dead of
night, yuppies making cattle drives across the desert just like the one in
the movie City Slickers, fights with the BLM over mineral rights.  "They'd
just as soon git rid of all of us," he says. "If this rain keeps up, you
won't even git out with four-wheel drive. I've walked out of this desert
before," he says.  "You better go."
We follow an exodus out of the desert, through the blinding dust,
hydroplaning on the slick mud. I look in the mirror and I'm Betelgeuse -- a
ghost with dust white skin and hair.  As we escape the whirling anarchic
madness, I still ask why.
Struggling to explain the question of the Man, I talked to my friend Diego, a
student of things mystical.  "Somewhere, back in their common consciousness,
they remember Lugh, the the summer horned god, child of light," Diego says.
"He dies so we may live."  In pre-Christian cultures, a man woven of straw
with loaves of bread inside was burned and the bread then fed to the village.
The druids also sacrificed humans who were burned alive so the crop would be
fruitful the next year.  "The Burning Man also sybolizes the death of love,"
he says.  "In their act of love, he is consumed."
 Throughout history, old forms of religion are superseded by new, and the new
forms use the most modern technology available to them to propagate. If so,
what is the crop we are promised when the Neon God burns? Commemorative
T-shirts? Video footage? Software?
Or perhaps just an escape. I keep remembering what the rocket man said while
I was soaking in the hot springs. "You know, a lot of different people are
out here at Black Rock this weekend," he said in a Nevada drawl. "You have
the rocketeers.  You have the racketeers. You have the Desert Survivors.  You
have the Desert Rats.  You have the Burning Man people.  And we have
something in common.  We all like fire."
Interview with the Orb by XLR8R:
	The main body of the Orb is composed of Kris Weston, aka
Thrash, and Dr. Alex Paterson. Visiting luminaries such as Thomas
Fehlman, Steve Hillage, Jah Wobble and Robert Fripp add to the
gaseous composition. I had a chance to spend part of the Day of Love
chatting with the good Dr. Paterson about Lollapalooza, UFOs, his new
label, new studio, and carrots. Over a background of bleeping and
sucking electronic sounds, Paterson fed cold fish to his pet terrapins
and gave the lowdown in a slow, glazed British accent.
XLR8R: Well, today is Valentine's day.
ALEX PATERSON: Indeed.
XLR8R: I just wanted to know, who's your valentine for today?
Well, I suppose my girlfriend is, but she's  ... what's she doing
tonight? Well, she's gone for a dress rehearsal, because she's going to
be a parrot  ... no, not a parrot, a carrot. She's going to be a carrot in a
show on Friday. There you go.
XLR8R: So what's your favorite way to celebrate Valentine's day?
Having my girlfriend be dressed up as a carrot, I suppose.
XLR8R: Always popular! [Laughter] So, what have you been working
on for the past few days? What are you working on right
now?
Um, we're just getting a studio together at the moment, actually.
We've built a studio, and we just have to get the equipment in.
Mixing desk, the wiring, get all that stuff in. It's like an empty shell
right now. So that's just finishing off Q we should start mixing the
new album ... next week, really. For the last few days I've just been
taking it easy.
XLR8R: That's great ... so what does the next year look like for the
Orb? When is the new album going to be released?
Hopefully in May. The single will come out a couple of weeks before
it. We should be doing some type of an American tour of some
proportions this summer as well. You know, you're the first journalist
who's talked to me about what we're really doing this year. Every
other journalist I've had to be really, really cynical and sarcastic.
Sorry if I bring that up straight away, but I've had to talk to some
girl about future sex ... she asked if I realize how many people are
having sex to my music. Just bizarre.
XLR8R: So what is your touring schedule going to be like? It sounds
like last year's tour went over very well.
Yeah, it did ... unfortunately, we didn't do that many gigs. I mean, we
just had five. But we did that only because we wanted to test the
water, see if people remember us Q and from that, it's pretty obvious
that they do. I mean, before we had just been told how we were
doing by a record company that we totally mistrusted, who really
wanted to put us across in America as a pop act. We were just very
unsure what the Americans would expect of us. The main man at Big
Life always said that RPerpetual DawnS would be the track that
would break America for the Orb, and that was really scary for us.
That led to the pop version that's on the American release of
[Adventures Beyond the] Ultraworld. That was really beyond my
control, which severely pissed me off. I mean, people have said that
to me, but I really didn't like having my album split in two. They
originally wanted me to cut every track down to five minutes, and
stick it on that way. I mean, imagine that ...
XLR8R: Rumor has it that you'll be touring America as part of the
Lollapalooza tour.
Rumor has it well. We've said so Q I've said so, and Kris has said so.
We'll do part of the tour Q maybe a month, maybe six weeks. I can't
see us sticking out for a whole summer of touring in America.
XLR8R: How does this look to you? You'll be touring with bands like
Nirvana, the Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins Q a
totally different situation from other Orb tours.
Well, we'll probably take the piss. We'll probably do sets with no
beats whatsoever. But at the same time, we're probably going to
surprise a lot of people as well, because we'll have Qyou might as
well be the first person to know Q we're got Paul Ferguson, who used
to drum for Killing Joke, who's going to be joining us to play live
drums. So there's going to be some oomph there as well. But none of
those bands scare me whatsoever. Potentially, we have music for you
that will blow the living daylights out of all that stuff. Maybe the
early Beastie Boys stuff from the first album might be on par, but
Nirvana are not a worry.
XLR8R: Are you going to be playing on the main stage with the rock
stars, then?
I have no idea. We'll probably be put on a stage of our own, though.
One of the things we said is that we wouldn't do it unless we could go
on at nighttime, because of our lights Q which will make complete
sense when you see our lights. So, I have no idea, really. Maybe we'll
be the band playing on the alternative stage at nighttime. I don't
know how it's going to work.
XLR8R: What projects are you most excited about right now?
Work-wise, last year we did an album. It started out as an Orb track
with Robert Fripp's guitar on it, and it's now turned into an album
project, with another Orb album in the pipeline, and two more
albums next year Q so that's four albums, and we'll do selected dates
next year, touring it. We'll be calling ourselves FFWD, which is Fast
Forward. Fehlman, Westman and me Q you might hear the name
Duncan, which is quite possible, because that's where the "doctor"
comes from.
XLR8R: What direction do you think the future is going to bring for
the Orb? There's definitely a different feel to the new
tracks on the live album.
It's going to be very electronic. Less samples and more electronic
music in there. We don't really want to try and be on the forefront,
but maybe we are, without meaning to be. So therefore we're going
to veer off a little bit, maybe add a few surprises to our album. But
then we have another five albums to do after this one, and we want
to do at least another four of those albums this year, so we can mix
them whenever we want to and mix them to the right sounds of that
particular year. In the meantime, while we're doing it, we'll find and
use a lot of new stuff. I haven't got a crystal ball. I can't tell you
what's going to happen in the future, but what we're doing is
probably as far into the left field as you can go.
And maybe people will try and push farther into that direction, but
we open that door. And good luck to them, all the people around us,
because I think we've got a nice happy little family of musicians and
bands over here. We all know each other and talk to each other Q we
talk to Black Dog, we talk to Aphex Twin, B12, Stan Robertson,
various people in Berlin, in Detroit ... we do talk to a family of bands.
Maybe we just happen to be sticking out a little further than those
other bands right now, because of the touring aspect. We're talking to
a lot of agents now who are afraid of booking these type of bands
because they don't know who's going to go Q if anyone. So you see, in
what we're doing, they might start booking this type of band. We're
off to Japan in May, with Orbital and System 7, which is really good,
because they're both new bands over there. I must say, the Japanese
are one of our biggest fan bases as well. It's really good over there Q
we get a lot of companies signing up, wanting to use our music for
adverts and stuff like that, which shows that this is a sound they
consider the future, even though we look at them and see the future
even though the future isn't really there, because they mass-produce
the future. But we see it as the future over there, because of the
culture. We won't talk about the technology Q the west coast of
America, that's where all the technology really is coming from.
XLR8R: Now that you're a major live artist as well as a studio
artist, how does that change the way you work?
Well, we get hassled by the postman to listen to demo tapes. And
same thing in the line at the grocery store Q this bloke keeps
handing me tapes, it's really embarrassing. Other than that, my life
hasn't really changed very much. I might be a bit more frantic now
and again with friends, but I think they understand I've got far less
time than I used to have to be myself.
XLR8R: But how do you think it changes your music, now that live
performance is as much a part of the Orb as studio mixing?
Well, we play live in the same way we play in the studio Q as if we
have a band in sound booths, and it's going into the mixing desk. Kris
is mixing all of those pieces Q the bass guitar, percussionist, ambient
noises Q through twenty-four tracks of music coming through the
mixing desk. We do play these things live Q it's not like a rock band,
get your rocks off, ha ha ha, or anything like that Q but on the same
point, there's also the visual aspect. It's almost like we're conductors,
and everything is going on behind us. By the end of the gig, no one
has actually noticed or seen us, which is nice, because that's not what
we're after. We're not after that sort of an ego kick that a lot of
people who do music are after. We don't really need it. We didn't
really have to go out on tour to sell the first album; the first album
sold because it was in the shops. But then we decided to go on tour to
see how much better it would be. Kris hates touring; I've lived on the
road since I was seventeen, so I have no problems with it. So there's
a complete north-pole south-pole there. We're going to tour this year,
but next year we may never tour again. But at the same point, he
might change his mind in a couple of years time; but at that point, I
might change my mind and decide that it's a good thing to hang me
boots up. But this will probably be the last year we're going to tour
for a long time anyway. We're going concentrate on the studio Q we
just take the studio live anyway. Those mixes you hear on the live
album are done to a mixing disk live on stage, on the tour. The
albums are done the same way, but in the studio.
XLR8R: What do people get out of a live Orb show that they don't
get out of other live shows, that they don't get out of just
listening to your music at home in bed?
I think it's just being with everyone, and the visuals as well Q it's an
added effect. A friend of mine who's also a journalist wrote about it,
and what he said about it is pretty much true: that when people
come to see the Orb, it's not because they're a house fan, or a rock
fan, or a reggae fan Q they go there because they just like the Orb.
And to me, that's the biggest compliment we can actually get. But it's
also very true. It just happens that way. We just happen to be very
lucky. Maybe we won't be so lucky in the next couple of years Q
maybe we'll have a bum break on the North American tour. But who
cares? I don't particularly mind. I think that for what we started out
as, a chill out band to just do Sunday afternoon sessions, we've done
extremely well at it so far. So there you go. I can't be too modest.
XLR8R: What projects are you involved with right now outside of
the Orb and musical collaborations? There are rumors that
you're working on a movie and a new video.
We've been approached to do a couple of film soundtracks. We're
waiting for Chris Blackwell to get back to us on that. Other than that,
I'm getting my own label together. We're releasing about four acts
this year.
XLR8R: What kind of acts are you releasing through your studio
and label?
What we consider pure ambient music, in a lot of respects. Very
industrial ambient music, as well. There's probably some dark space
in there as well. Juno Reactor is releasing something called Luciano,
Juno Reactor 2, which is a furthering of a project that Ben Watkins
started with Mute. The label is called Intermodo now, instead of
Wau! Mr. Modo, as it used to be. That will be released around May,
along with the FFWD project. There's another band called
Autocreation who put an album out on Warp; they've just recently
signed to us. Various other tracks, different artists. I can't really
explain it in ten minutes; it would take all night, really. [Laughter]
XLR8R: It seems like ambient music is becoming more and more
another form of popular music. Here in Seattle it's still
fairly underground, but in San Francisco next month there's
going to be a big event with ambient music as the main
attraction, rather than a side event. What do you think
about ambient music becoming pop?
Unfortunately, I think that's not what it's really about. What you say
is Q in a lot of respects, why do people go see the Orb? The lights,
being together with people who like the Orb. That might work at an
ambient event if everyone liked pure ambient music. But then if it
grew into so many people that people came simply because it was
the latest hip fashion, there would be a total reaction against that. I
don't particularly want to start or be part of something that will be
so huge that there will be a reaction against it. That would just be
giving more fodder to society, because that's how everything works.
That's human nature.
XLR8R: A lot of people trace the roots of ambient music to very
avant-garde composers like Brian Eno or John Cage, but
looking at ambient music as pop music, there's definitely a
connection to seventies progressive rock. And punk started
as a backlash against that.
Yeah ... I used to be a punk rocker. I was there. In those days, here,
living in London, getting beaten up for being a punk rocker. Going
out, getting spat at by people, being chased down the road. There
was a real reaction against it. There you go ... that was in 1977.
Nineteen seventy-seven, I wish we'd all go to heaven.
I know what you're saying, but I don't want to be part of that. I don't
want to be part of some mega-band scenario, where thousands of
people will turn up for one event. I mean, we've been asked to do a
gig at Wembley with Mixmaster Morris, and we turned that down.
There's only so far we'll go. The biggest we've ever done, other than
festivals, is the Academy, in London. It holds four and a half
thousand people. If you go anywhere bigger, it's shy Q no
atmosphere, you don't know what security you're going to get, who
the fuck you'll be dealing with. With the Academy, we know that
place inside out Q I know that place inside out, because I used to
roadie there, years ago. I used to roadie for some really shit bands,
some really good bands. We know the security, the people backstage,
so it's no problem. And it's the only place around that
gives you a 6 a.m. license, so you can finish at 6 a.m. and have a
really good night out. You know the bouncers who are there, they
aren't going to beat people up and take their drugs. They're just
going to let people chill out. If they see people smoking, they'll get
thrown out, but it's not a problem. That should be the way it is,
anyway. A lot of places in New York are like that, and a lot of places
in San Francisco are like that. There's a hell of a lot of places that
simply don't tolerate that type of behavior, and that's really sad.
There's a lot of bouncers that will exercise their right to beat the fuck
out of you just because you drank in excess of twelve pints of beer.
They just come up with excuses. It's the same old story. Everyone's
been saying this for years, it's not even worth mouthing off about it.
It's stupid. People should just legalize cannabis and get with it.
XLR8R: How do you feel about the legalization of hemp for
industrial purposes in the UK?
Amused. [Coughs] To be sure, very amused. They've done that, but at
the same time, this week they're trying to pass a law through
Parliament where if you're caught with possession of Class B drugs,
which are amphetamines or cannabis, you get fined from 500 up to
2500 pounds, which is ludicrous. That's not stopping crime Q that's
making turn to more crime. People will say, "Well, I've been busted
for two and a half grand, so I'll have to go nick something to pay that
back." [Laughter]
XLR8R: Here in the United States, our prisons are filling up at a
rapid rate because of minimum mandatory sentences for
possession of narcotics.
You can get twenty years for maybe bringing in a bit of hash, and
some bloke might rape three girls and get six years for it. Where's
the sense in that? I think we're both in the same boat here. I just
hope that as we get older, the generation we're dealing with now will
be dead and gone, thank god, and then there won't be this primitive
way of thinking. I can't see why they don't legalize it anyway,
because they can make so much money out of it by taxing it.
XLR8R: Do you see the Orb as part of a larger trend within society?
You've been classified as part of the "rave" movement,
whatever that means.
Tell me, I don't know. Horrible word.
XLR8R: Do you see yourself as an aspect or part of a larger
movement?
Furthering UFOlogy research is one of our interests. Other than that,
really, musically we can go a long way. Maybe we'll fall down flat on
our faces, but at least we've given it a try. That's our main thing as
the Orb. There are things we want to get into, but we just haven't got
the time, incredible as it may seem. As they say, Rome wasn't built in
a day Q these things take time. To get into full time videos or full
time visual ideas would be fun, but it takes money and time. Maybe
we'll have the money and the time right now, but at the moment we
haven't got either.
XLR8R: The album U.F.Orb was about furthering UFOlogy and
conspiracy theory. What have you been doing with that
lately?
I've been reading a few books, but that's as far as it goes. That's
where I got all the information from before, reading books. I met this
journalist in Canada three years ago who gave me a copy of the
Majestic Papers which had been circulating throughout America for a
few years. It was about the meetings these twelve people, the
Majestic Society, had in the blue room, letting each other know about
the UFO experiences and how they should cover it up. It's been
deemed a fake now, but it's another thing that was in my head.
XLR8R: What's the best book you've read recently?
Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. I don't know if you
know anything about the book Q it was reedited and rereleased right
after he died in 1989. It's about a third bigger now, because a lot of
pressure was put on him by the FBI or the CIA, one of the two, to not
release the book. They didn't want people to get the idea that there
was another race of people walking around in 1962 in America. They
didn't want them to feel like there was another conspiracy going on,
so he had to rewrite a lot of the book. When I read the book, I talked
to my older brother about it. He had read the older version, and
there are a lot of things in the new version that he hadn't read
before. I advise you if you haven't read the new version, to read it.
The other one I've read recently is The Twelfth Planet, by Zachariah
Stich, which is full of mad ideas. I love ideas. They aren't just ideas,
they're other humans' thoughts, which are the same thing, really.
XLR8R: What have you been listening to? Could you give us your
top ten albums?
Not really. The Red Planet 5, with 4 dots on it ... a few things on
Fragile ... album-wise ... Galaxy, which I recently re-found on CD ... a
couple of Eno ones I've been getting back into recently. There you go,
really. I've been mostly listening to the FFWD project and some other
Orb-like mixes. Our new single, RPomme FritesS ... I'm sure we'll be
remixing or mixing on that again next week. We did some mixes in
Berlin in January. When you're working on a track, you don't really
listen to anything else ... you just sort of lose it. You have to just stay
in there, then maybe take a couple of weeks off, then go back to it.
XLR8R: The theme of the issue we're putting out in just a few days
is going to be goats ...
Goats?!
XLR8R: Yeah, goats ... we were just wondering how you feel about
goats and other farm animals.
I don't have any problems with them ... I think every house should
have them. I don't have a goat, but I have some terrapins.
XLR8R: What are their names?
Victor the Cleaner and Michelangelo. Michelangelo for obvious
reasons Q or unobvious, for those who don't know. [Laughter] My
girlfriend named him Michelangelo, from the Ninja Turtle ones. My
turtle is named Victor from La Nikita Q don't know if you've seen the
film. There's a particular bloke in there she rings up after she's killed
someone, he's called Victor the Cleaner. He comes around and cleans
the body up. They just ravage things. When you called, I had just
given them fish, and so my hands are really cold. They're brilliant
when they're eating fish.
XLR8R: If you could be any farm animal, what would it be?
If I could be ... that's the old Freudian question, isn't it really?
XLR8R: We could do some word association ...
No, please don't ... [Laughter] I suppose a pig, really ... don't ask me
why. I saw an amazing pig last year, which was like the best animal
I've ever seen in my life. I've never seen an animal so big and
happy.
XLR8R: If you had a message to send a message out to all the
inhabitants of the world, what would it be?
Me? I'd have to think about that, really ... that's the message: "I'll
think about that ...". Hmm ... I have no idea. I'd probably go on and go
on for quite a while. What would you say?
XLR8R: I'm not sure either. Hard to decide, isn't it? I was hoping
you'd have some ideas.
It depends on how many words and sentences you've got to say it ...
anyway ...
XLR8R: Maybe someday you can get your own TV station.
Maybe one day we could be like U2 ... you never know.
Release Review -
RIOT SQUAD: "Nonshlentustokken" (12") [12-Gauge]  Send in the comic relief!
Redefining the word "unhinged," the Squad return for their second single
with three of the silliest songs on record.  The A-side is a punishing remix
of their first release fueled by ultra-fast speed metal samples and those
inimitable, uh, vocals.  On the flup side is the R-rated (at least) "Boriqua
Bitch," with its "Dildo"-style sample loop of "puta-puta-puta-puta" and
wonderfully tasteless rap.  "Gabberkeisen" closes the set by addressing
those who operate below 200 BPM with the phrase, "Hay softies, you suck!"
You know, there are some records you just hate to admit you love.  Rated a
4.5 out of 5. As for me? i hate the Riot Squad, but it sure works wonders for getting a
good belly laugh out of someone who has never heard it before.  if nothing
else, never dance to it.  it could give even a healthy person a cardiac
arrest.
CUIT New Powers Radio Show:
 "New Powers" - a techno/ambient/industrial/experimental radio show
which airs on CIUT 89.5 FM (University of Toronto)- will be doing a two
hour special on Terence McKenna this Sunday July 10 at 8:30pm EST.
CIUT has about 10,000 watts of power (I *think*) and can picked up
throughout Southern Ontario (Canada) and as far south as North Western New
York state.
The special will feature an interview with McKenna (who is appearing in
Toronto this Monday, July 11 at the Yuppie feel-good centre The Learning
Annex), excerpts from his spoken tapes, McKenna's collaborations with
The Shaman, Space-Time Continuum, Coil (??? - not sure if that's out yet)
and others, and likely, a little healthy cynicism from host Chris Twomey.
Next Sunday, New Powers will broadcast a *LIVE* performance by the Future
Sound of London (part of a number of performances they're doing for
campus stations in North America)
I think CIUT's phone number is (416) 595-5063 (but don't quote me).
They *might* be able to give you more info.....who knows.
808 STATE PRESS RELEASE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
808 State (Graham Massey, Darren Partington and Andrew Barker), progenitors of
techno music and world renowned dance music group, are pleased to announce the
launch of their worldwide information service STATE TO STATE.

THE LAUNCH...
STATE TO STATE is to receive its worldwide launch on MTV Europe's club dance
programme The Party Zone on 4th August 1994 at midnight CET. This is the
first time an artist has ever co-hosted the show and 808 will be playing
some of their latest material and discussing the world's dance scene with
the Party Zone VJ Simone. There's also a competition to win a Roland Drum
Machine worth over $1,000! 808 State are the longest group to be signed to
the infamous ZTT Label, which includes the artists Seal, Wendy & Lisa and
Shades Of Rhythm. The Party Zone will be featuring a ZTT special on 7th July
as a run-up to the State to State launch.

THE MAGAZINE...
STATE TO STATE will include publication of a quarterly full colour magazine
by 808 State, discussing the latest in music and technology worldwide, from
808's perspective. Subscribers (13UKP in the UK, 15UKP overseas,
cheques/IMOs payable "State To State") will receive the magazine, updates on
all future 808 State releases and collaborations and some unusual freebies,
including...

THE FREE CD ALBUM...
All members will receive a copy of the STATE TO STATE CD Album (808 State's
8th album to date!). Produced by 808 State exclusively for their fans, the
album includes over an hour of totally unreleased material including live
performances. This is 808's chance to give something back to their fans,
particularly apt given the recent fury in the UK over CD pricing. This is the
first time an artist has given away an album for free!

COMMUNICATE WITH 808...
From 4th August 1994 you can contact 808 State directly (AND SUBSCRIBE TO
STATE TO STATE!) at: STATE TO STATE, PO Box 808, Hook, Basingstoke, RG25 1UF,
United Kingdom. Price: 13UKP in UK, 15UKP non-UK, cheques/IMOs payable
"State To State"; *your CD album will be despatched immediately*!

Just who are 808 State?
Since the release of their 1988 debut album Newbuild, 808 State have remained
one of the most influential dance music bands in the world. With the club
anthem Pacific in 1989 they made their mark and the follow up smash singles
In Yer Face, Cnbik/Olympic, The Only Rhyme That Bites (with MC Tunes) and
Ooops (with BjVrk) have helped created a new genre of dance music. As
in-demand producers 808 State have also worked on collaborations with
artists diverse as:

Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Electronic, The Future Sound Of London, New Order,
The Shamen, Art of Noise, UB40, Yellow Magic Orchestra and BjVrk, to name but
a few! With seven albums to date, including the legendary Ex:el, 808 State
continue to re-invent their sound, refusing to be categorised. In their own
words:

"Most dance music bands these days are more about hype than substance and 808
State have always been about completely the opposite. We've always believed
in freedom of expression and that's what STATE TO STATE is about. It's going
to give our fans the opportunity to speak directly to us, by post or
electronic mail, from anywhere in the world. How can artists produce music
for the people if they create barriers to keep them away?"

In the last 12 months 808 State have completed a 9 week tour of the US,
Hawaii, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong with Meat Beat Manifesto and Supreme
Love Gods and then back out to the US for a stadium tour with New Order.
Recent production work includes YMO, Something Wonderful, Heitor (from Simply
Red) and BjVrk (Violently Happy remixes). Their new single BOMBADIN is due
for release in the UK on 25th July on ZTT. It received a world premiere as
the finale music to the Todd Oldham Winter 1994 fashion show in New York,
featuring Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen and Co!
Bombadin is currently 18 in the Record Mirror promo chart (a jump from 71!),
15 in the DJ Hype Chart and 25 in the DMC Chart. Over the Glastonbury
weekend it was played three times in one hour on Kiss FM radio station in
London! 808 State are currently in the studio working on their new album
and "it's a new sound for a new scene!"

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED...
The launch of a permanent address on the Internet, allowing 34 million E-Mail
users worldwide to communicate directly with 808 State! The new single
Bombadin playing on all Virgin Airways flights throughout the Summer, along
with an 808 State interview. A "Pirate TV" segment on a forthcoming Channel
4 TV series in the UK, and a number of as yet undisclosed collaborations and
projects... more news to follow!

::After a quick skim-through in the store in which I found nothing that
really hit me, I bought this album anyway, hoping I might find it
different when I got home. I was right. On a first listen, it all sounded
too similar - a futuristic synth trip repeated eleven times. After a few
rotations on the turntable however, the individual personalities of each
track began to seep through. The overall flavour is one of space, a
smooth riding beat with airy chords and electronic chirping. I think it
could easily be filed next to artificial intelligence, hearing sounds
reminicsent of some Autechre, or B12 with a turbocharger. Overall,
nothing too innovative, but all together, some pleasant listening - and a
nice poster inside to go with it.

::As I was paying for my other records, Josh slapped this on the turntable
and said "This is great, you've got to hear it" Having not heard too
much DJAX in the past, and not liking what I had heard, I wasnt expecting
much. This however, was a very nice surprise. The first side is a beautiful
raw acid track stomping along at 137bpm - to quote Richie Hawtin, "the 303
is one of most soulful and sexy machines ever made" (AMP Mar94). The flip
side, however, is where my attention lies. It opens with a nice groovin'
piece, backed with sustained chords and an occasional break before the
beat returns. Its the inner track, however, that Josh brought my
attention to, and the one that really stands out. It opens fairly
quietly, smooth synth noises, and the occasional jingle of piano keys.
When the beat enters, we are left with a really sweet, slinky, dance
track. Beautiful - definately one of those 6am groovers. Keep an eye out
for it - this one came on tasty orange vinyl..

   ::Quick (QUICK1)

    :Loop (F.U.S.E Mix)
     :Loop (LFO Journey Mix)

::Picked this one out of the bargain bin for a whopping $2. The LFO mix
moves along at a very slow 101bpm and really doesn't have much to it. I
have a feeling that even a +8 on the ttable couldn't save this from its
blandness. The F.U.S.E mix was instantly more appealing, moving along at
about 133bpm. Though still not a masterpiece by any standards, this track
somehow manages to capture a groove that LFO couldn't find and turned out
to be quite appealing. I've heard people criticize Richie Hawtin in the
past for being too monotonous and never understood why, but this time, it
shows through. Nice, but have another record nearby.

::This was one of the more expensive records I've bought, but definately
worth it. I've been meaning to review this for ages, but I couldnt get it
off my turntable long enough. Anyway, in a word, brilliant. Its been a
while since I've heard such a diverse bag of tracks wrapped up by a
single musician with such quality. Leaning towards the ambient, you are
faced with stark industrial sounds, threats of arrest "for criminal drug
evasion", and bold rhythms. Reload never lets me guess what coming next,
as we explore his extraterrestrial domain. A very nice collection which
over all has a "soundtrack" feel to it, and needs not rely on those all
to familiar sounds which plague most ambient music of today. But thats
not all, Reload has power. Wicked shuffling beats, raw in the afx
tradition, momentarily break the ambience and go crazy. This has to be
one of my best buys in recent times, ignore it at your own risk.

 ::::From Within
   ::+8 Records (PLUS8036)

    :A Million Miles to Earth
     :Homeward Bound

::The long anticipated collaboration between FAX's Peter Namlook and
Plus-8's Richie Hawtin has finally arrived. I was expecting a masterpiece
from two great minds such as these and have to say I was dissapointed on
a first listen. After a few more rotations however, I really began to
like it. My only complaint now is that mine is the nastiest pressing ive
seen to date from plus8 - some nasty pops and a substantial warp.
Musicwise though, it is a nice piece. The first track is one of those
ambient soundtracks that just keep on building. A repetative sequence
played over some nice synths with the occasional tweak to keep the space
alive. The second track is my favourite of the two however - a nice
ambient intro leads you into a smooth shuffley beat and builds into an
airy morning groover. Oh, and for all the bass bin huggers among you, yes,
this one has bass too. Wicked.

    :PHI*1700 (U/V)
     :Glink
      :Paco
       :Xolbe II

::Michael Paradinas (aka Mu-Ziq) makes his R&S debut and remember, the
keyword is MAD. The first track is lifted straight from his Tango N
Vectif album released on Rephlex records so I'll focus on the others, not
to say of course that its not worthy of attention. Glink opens with harsh
beats creating a somewhat hostile sound, but then all of a sudden - here
comes the funk. MAD. The effect created by having that short jazzy riff
amongst the electronic noise attack in the background is nothing short of
incredible. I love it, I just wish it was longer. The silver side opens
at a much more subdued pass with a slightly darker track backed by those
filtered drums which seem to be the Mu-ziq signature. The last track,
Xolbe II, begins with what sounds like the drone of a vacuum cleaner or
perhaps just white noise, which continues througout its entirety creating
a sureal backdrop. Eery chime-like notes join the noise and are
occasionly accompanied by a short burst of drums before the bass finally
kicks in. A rather spooky, but no less brilliant, track. As I've said
before, Muziq has the ability to make Richard James seem almost sane.

::A surprising find in our local store which cater's more to the college
rock crowd. It comes in a nice blue/green box with what appears to be a
colourised bacteria culture on the front and contains three 10-inch
records, each with 2 mixes of the track Basscadet, making a very nice set
and a great trainspotters collection piece. The first mix is considerably
slower than the original, and as with all the remixes, it takes it in a new
and very different direction. Beaumont Hannant does some nice work with
the second mix, opening with a tubular bell sound and building it up into
a rhythm before adding drums and creating a very moody trance-inducing
piece with nice ambient segments. The second 10" is probably my
favourite of the three, the first track being the Seefeel mix - a heavy,
darker ambient track with long sustained noises and a repeated
snare hit that echoes through the void created. The flip side continues
the feeling of darkness with deep sustained tones and a filtered echoing
beat. The third and final 10" again takes Basscadet in a new direction
and ends with another nice mix by Beaumont Hannant. All together a nice
set of remixes and a nice collectors item, music at a considerably slower
pace than most of what we hear now.

 ::::Locust - Skysplit EP
   ::R&S Records (RS93031)

    :Lust
     :Wilheim Klopper Dance
      :Tamed
       :Pithano

::This was recommended to me by a friend who said that R&S were promoting
Locust by comparing him to the Aphex Twin. Not quite. The first track
is a heavy brooding track, grinding along at 121bpm, with a few strange
vocal samples thrown in for good measure. The second track immediately
appears faster and a lot lighter than the previous and consists of a
smooth riding beat with submarine-like ping sounds echoing in the back
ground creating a nice spacious sound.. The reverse side continues the
Locust sound with another smooth track and bizarre vocal samples, backed by
bursts of electronic droning. The last track, Pithano, has a similar
smooth beat and is added to to by a short repeated 5-note sequence thats
sounds reminicsent of those old horror movie effects. Not sure why I like
this record really, but I do. Its certainly not afx, and its far from
outstanding, but it does have a different sound that somehow appeals to
me. Give it a listen first.

Rave Review: Pleasure Force - Joker's High - 2 Year Anniversary
by The Phantom

	I remember when I first heard about this rave. I was walking up
Yonge street and I saw a sticker on a garbage can. "Wow" I thought, "Pleasure
Force is holding a massive 2 year event?". Then later on a freind of mine
was walking down Queen Street with the infamous Joker flyer. However, I had
already known most of the information through freinds and other sources like
Hardcore Net. So there I was... all pumped up for the rave event of my life!

	I bought my ticket a good week and a half a head of schedule... I
HAD to go to this party.. I didn't care if I had to go alone... but I guess
that was the mentallity of most of my freinds. So we all accompanied
each other.

	The day of the party my girlfriend and I went to this chick's house to
help her dress for her very first rave. At her house, I called the info line
and heard about the so called "tragedy" of DJ Randall and MC GQ. Most
people would have been upset. Not me. I loved the thought of having Dominik
and Mystical Influence there instead of some DJ and MC which I have never
heard or seen before. So now I was pumped. To top all of this. I had saved
all money so now I was ready to go to the event of my life with a good wad
of 120.oo strictly for pleasure!

	We showed up at Union and the place was packed compared to other rave
events. I quickly hooked up with a freind and we were on our way on the
longest shuttle bus ride of my life! Didn't matter. Someone sparked a joint
so it was a "happy" bus ride. The event location pretty good. It was like
something I never experienced. I was sort of hoping though that the rave
WOULD be infact in the barn. However, it was in some sort of warehouse.

	The warehouse was HUGE. It had two main rooms and a common "hall" like
room which was also the enterance (somewhat). As I waited in the line
freezing my ass off, I heard the music that would make me dance ALL night. The
security was the same security as at most raves (Delirium, Happy Face, etc.).
It was the High Profile Posse and well... the faces looked familiar so I
didn't care too much that the girl was searching through every nook and cranny
of my shoe.

	As soon as we entered we were in amazement. All we saw were two
HUGE enterances to two different dance arenas and both had the most amazing
lights shining out of them. This was going to be a good party.

       We took a few more steps inside and started looking for the "chillout"
area. We needed to snort our E's because we had to split 3 amoungst 4 people.
We looked and looked and looked. No chillout space. That put a major damper
on the party for me. I need a chillout room to crash and to mingle during a
party when I can no longer keep myself standing.

	Okey... now I was E'd and ready to go. There were ALOT of people at
this event. So it was real easy to hook up with old raver freinds who I've
mingled with before. I noticed that alot of the conversation around me and
sometimes mine, would be: "Hey, didn't I see you at ______ ". So it's safe
to say that the atmosphere was pretty cool (except for narcs... but that's
in a different article) everyone at the rave was really freindly and no
shyness was allowed. If you were single... this would have been a rave to go
to.

	Alright. Now I'll move on to the music that was played. One of the
best DJ's that spun that night would definatly have to be Ruffneck. I
heard the MC calling him the new "King of the Jungle". I have got to agree.
This guy was spinning up some major damage. My most favorite track would
definatly have to be "Long Dark Tunnel" (not sure if that's the real name).

	Here's the part that I've been saving for last. DJ DOMINIK!! As
soon as I heard this God's name I went MeNTaL! I can't put enough "!"'s to
explain the rushing sensation which this master spinster put me through. He
just wouldn't slow down! This guy was quick. Perfect if you were on some
good E's. Some people say that Rotterdam is not there type of music. But I
bet after that night at Pleasure Force's 2 Year event... about 99% changed
their minds. What can I say but..."Congrats Dominik... you were awesome as
per usual".

	Well... the rave turned out good in the end... the music wasn't too
bad. I actually would have bought the PF2 tapes if they had Dominik and
Ruffneck on them. However, according to Rob at X-Static (go to him and
complain because he's the only one with answers) Pleasure Force ran out of
DAT's (whatever the hell those are) and weren't able to tape the two best
DJ's Live. So... go out and buy Ruffneck's and Dominik's tapes, because
those are the two best (my opinion) DJ's out there (for rushing purposes
exclusivly).

	That's it for this rave reviewer... but I'll close off by making
one more complaint. Shuttle Service SUCKED! It was f__king terrible! I had
to wait a good hour and a half for shuttle service... then the fucking bus
was full!!! You kinda wonder if they didn't make enough money to hire just
one more bus and only make the wait 45 mins... but hey... it was worth the 3
hours wait to go home. I've never been happier with a rave in my life.

	Sorry for the late review... it's my first!

This is to introduce you to Control-Alt-Delete, the Information Society
Network Newsletter. C-A-D was started by and for the fans of Information
Society. It is named, endorsed and supported by Kurt Harland, INSOC's lead
singer. As C-A-D has grown, it has formed a Network of music fans that
encompasses a much broader base. While C-A-D still focuses on INSOC, the
Network covers many other bands. C-A-D encourages and expects participation
by the Network. C-A-D loves all sorts of music news and new bands in
particular, so if you have an interest in any of the above, join C-A-D's
Network.

C-A-D is a sixteen page zine, issued quarterly on Jan 15, Apr 1, July 1,
Oct 1, for $3.95 per issue or a 4 issue subscription for $15. Interested
