WHAT IS EMISSARY(TM)?

Wollongong's Emissary is a new Internet access solution featuring Web

browsing, multimedia e-mail and news reading, file retrieval, and

interactive access all in a single, integrated Windows application.

Emissary addresses problems that Internet users have been struggling

with for years--complexity and inefficiency. What sets Emissary apart

from the pack is the incorporation of COLT(TM)--Wollongong's object

oriented, Client Object Linking Technology, the intelligent agent that

insulates users from all those acronyms like FTP, HTTP, MIME, etc.

Before Emissary, Internet users were forced to buy different

applications with separate user interfaces to utilize select Internet

resources. These separate applications require users to manipulate

multiple applications and various protocols to do simple tasks, such as

viewing an image contained in a mail message or news item. With

Emissary, all the complexities of Internet protocols are negotiated and

executed automatically.

Wollongong is pleased to offer this opportunity to evaluate Emissary to

the entire Internet community. Since this is an evaluation version of

Emissary, it will expire and cease to operate on 31 October 1995.

Please check the Wollongong Web pages for periodic software updates.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Emissary's minimum computer requirements are: A PC/386, 4MB RAM,

Windows 3.1 or higher. The Emissary download file is about 2.7

megabytes in size. It creates files totaling another 4 megabytes in

size during installation. Be certain you have sufficient hard disk

space prior to installation.

For uncompromised graphic displays, set your display to at least 256

colors, if possible.

You must be running a WINSOCK 1.1 compliant TCP/IP stack. Your current

browser or other Internet tools probably use a WINSOCK stack now. (Note

that Emissary Desktop Edition, available now, includes Wollongong's high

performance TCP/IP stack.) Once connected to the Internet, you will be

able to run Emissary the same way you run your other applications.

If you are unsure about your TCP/IP stack, check with your System

Administrator or Internet Service Provider for clarification.

INSTALLATION

If you receive your evaluation copy over the Internet, you should have

one executable file. Simply run this file and follow the prompts to

install.

If you received this evaluation copy on disk, insert Disk 1, then from

Windows, run SETUP.EXE. From there, follow the installation prompts,

inserting Disk 2 when asked.

In order to install the Emissary software, you will be required to

accept an on-line evaluation and license agreement.

The installation procedure will give you the option to change

installation directory and Program Group name. We strongly recommend

that you use the default values whenever possible.

Once the installation is complete, your Emissary Program Group will

appear on your screen with the Emissary icon, a Help icon, and the

Emissary Uninstall icon.

If you wish at any point to remove the software, use the Uninstall

program provided within the Emissary program group. After you run the

Uninstall program, please check your Windows directory, and if the files

WAACKY.INI and UNWISE.EXE still exist, please delete them manually.

CONFIGURATION

In order to begin using your copy of Emissary, please follow the

instructions below.

There are three configuration parameters you must set in order to use

Emissary. Once the software is installed and running, you'll find these

configuration boxes under the "Options" menu bar:

Choose "Mail..." in the "Options" menu and set your POP3 account name

(for example, "bob@mailbox.acme.com") and password, as well as other

mail preferences. Click "Send Options" and enter the name of your SMTP

server (for example, "mailout.acme.com") and your own email address.

Choose "News..." in the "Options" menu and enter the name of your News

server (for example, "news.acme.com"), your name, and the organization

you represent. You can set other News preferences by clicking

"Preferences".

Choose "System Options..." in the "Options" menu if you need to enter

the IP address of your Domain Name Server.

If you are unsure of what any of these parameters are for your site,

please check with your System Administrator or Internet Service

Provider.

This is the minimum of configuration that is needed to get Emissary up

and running. There are several additional parameters that you may set

to further customize Emissary, but these are not required for standard

operation. You will find these preference options within various menus.

Emissary is now ready to help you explore your PC, corporate networks,

and the Internet!

TROUBLESHOOTING

What if it doesn't work? Due to the limited number of configuration

parameters Emissary requires, troubleshooting your installation and

configuration is easy.

The following are some of the most common ways users can have problems.

If you find that you are having trouble with your Emissary installation,

please check the following:

* Make sure that your TCP/IP WINSOCK stack is running and functioning

correctly. You can verify this by trying your other Internet

applications, or if you have it, the PING utility to check the

availability of your mail and/or News server.

* Double check to make sure your configuration parameters have been

correctly entered, (i.e.: POP3 account name, SMTP server, News server)
