The number of charitable organizations in the United States alone
must be in the thousands or tens of thousands, and the great majority
of them are by any reasonable standard "worthwhile" activities. The
very few listed here are just some that our household finds of
especial interest or value.

The addresses shown are those for contributions. If you want further
information about any of them, an enquiry to that address will no
doubt suffice. Information on most of them can be found in one or
another place on the internet.

The Nature Conservancy
  1815 North Lynn Street
  Arlington, VA 22209

A private alternative to the weak-willed and underfunded public
programs to preserve for posterity critical parcels of diverse
wilderness land. TNC has acquired and protects stretches from a
few acres to vast ranges all around the world, in the wild and
  even in near-urban areas.

Wilderness Scouts Of America, Inc.
  Post Office Box 807
  Blairsville, GA 30514

A small band of dedicated persons trying to bring some structure
and light into the lives of impoverished southern-Appalachian
children by way of nature awareness and projects. The Boy Scouts
Of America tried--and failed--to put them out of business in 1989 by
law suit, so you *know* they must be doing good work.
