Welcome to The Hypertext Desk:

1. What's this thing you have?

The Hypertext Desk is an overview of hypertext. It is especially meant
for those just beginning their adventure into hypertext.

2. Files you should have from the unzipped archive:

    README .......... this file
    DESK4.XDB ....... The Hypertext Desk Version 4.0 - compiled
    DESK4.EXE ....... hypertext engine

3. Installation:

Make a directory entitled "DESK4" and put DESK4.NDB and DESK4.EXE
into it.

4. Viewing The Hypertext Desk:

While in The Hypertext Desk's directory type "DESK4" (without quotes)
and press ENTER.

In a few seconds, the logo will come up.

Now, press any key and you will go to the home menu.

This menu is made up of items all highlighted in yellow and one
of them, probably the top one, has a gray screen cursor on it.

You can move the cursor with the up & down and right & left arrow
keys. Practice moving the cursor.

The pageup & pagedown keys also will move the cursor. Give them a
try.

Place the cursor on the top item, the one entitled "About the
Hypertext Desk."

Press the ENTER key. Yikes! What happened? You activated some
hypertext. Congratulations!

The yellow highlighted menu items are all hot spots linked
to information down inside The Hypertext Desk.

Throughout The Hypertext Desk you will see hot spots made up of one or
more words. Each is linked to information about the word or words making
up the hot spot.

Are you starting to get an idea about what hypertext is?

A hot spot can also be activated by placing the mouse cursor on it and
pressing the left mouse button.

You can return to a hot spot in a variety of ways. At this time, press
the ESC key. You should be back at the main menu.

That was a workout! After you catch your breath, why don't you
practice a bit more with the menu hot spots and then investigate
the top and bottom function menus and the help screen which is activated
by pressing the F1 key.

One more item: There are some sections of this document that are more than
one monitor screen in length. This will be indicated by the appearance
of a scroll bar on the right side of the screen. You can scroll up and
down the section by using the scroll bar, the arrow keys, or the pageup
& pagedown keys.

5. What's New in Version 4.0

        - top and bottom menus of functions
        - scroll bar on the left whenever a section is more than one
          screen in length
        - more areas of the desk to explore: in the magazine rack, on

        - updated information with more authoring systems profiled
