                            The Address Book

                             by Tony Curro

I took a look at this program because I was looking for a small
monochrome program to work on my palmtop computer. I found that, but
also discovered a good address that works on my desktop computer. The
Address Book v3.3 is distributed as shareware. Users who register this
product automatically get the enhanced and non-shareware version 4.10
(the number may be higher by the time you register). It is simple enough
to use at home, but powerful enough for the office or while on road. Use
it in you notebook, subnotebook, or palmtop.

The Address Book is a rolodex type program that works on both monochrome
and color monitors. Version 3.3 had a slight problem with mono mode, but
the registered version has an option to set it, among other things. In
the registered version you can set: User File Directory, Monitor,
Keyboard, Printer and many other options.

When you first start The Address Book you should press F1 for your
setup. The program will print labels and envelopes, in addition to call
summary, notes, and more.

The first screen you see after you set your options and start is a blank
card. Press F2 to start entering data. In the registered version there
are many more options than in the shareware release. Several I noticed
are:

* You have an option of using a title like: Mr. & Mrs., Ms., etc., for
your names.
* You have 2 address lines, a Country line, and a pop-up box to add
Suite, Box, Unit, Apt, or none. If none, the box disappears.

There is a second page, and a notepad feature in v4.10 that is not in
v3.3. When in the first page, you press ALT-SPACEBAR (this option is
changeable from setup if it conflicts with a TSR) there is a screen
where you enter personal information about the person: Birthday,
Anniversary, Spousal information, children, other relatives and notes.
When you are in the first screen, you can also press SPACEBAR alone.
This pops up a notepad. The first time you enter it for a contact you
see a line with current day, date and time. After you enter the
information, you can save it. Anytime you add further notes for this
person the top line is current day, etc., and previous information is
moved to the end of the file. If the notes are longer than a screen they
will just move down. Retrieving information is simple, as the notepad
has a search feature. You can also print notes.

Both versions allow you to print envelopes and labels. Version 4.10 has
two envelope and four label sizes. It will print the popular 2 5/8 x 1
inch Avery label that is 3 across and 10 down (30 to a page). When you
enter names in The Address Book, you can enter then either forward or
reverse: Tony Curro or Curro, Tony. The program will place them last
name first for sorting anyway. But, when you go to print an envelope or
label, the program is smart enough to reverse it to Tony Curro for
printing the way it should be. The program will also ignore blank lines
when printing. So, if your card looks something like this:

Name: Tony Curro
Company:
Address: 28 Vesey St.

City: New York State: NY PCode: 10007
Country:

A label or envelope would look like:

Tony Curro
28 Vesey St.
New York, NY 10007

Likewise if you add a company name, and omit the person's name, it would
print in the same fashion.

The Address Book also allows you to have up to 4 different phone numbers
for a contact, and optionally enter a one letter code next to each
number to designate it. The options are for: Office, Home, Car, Fax,
Pager. Version 4.10 users also have an option for BBS. It will dial from
your modem for you.

Two other features are import, and merge. Import allows you to bring in
a text file with names and addresses. As with any importing, it must
match specific criteria, and format, in order for The Address Book to
properly read it.

There is also a group field on the card. Here you would put, if any,
what group you want this card to belong to. Group names are entered by
the user. You can have: Friend, Doctor, Contact, etc. Group is an
excellent field for sorts. You can select say all cards that belong to
the friend's group, and then print out envelopes, etc., for them. Or,
just print out a list of names and phone numbers of a selected group. As
you can see from the feature lists below, there are many other things
you can do with this program.

The program runs in DOS, but will run as a DOS program within MS
Windows. I was so pleased with this program, that as soon as I saw it
ran fine on my palmtop, I immediately registered it.

The author has included a DEMO of his commercial version 4.10 with the
v3.3 shareware bundle. The DEMO will only allow you to store a maximum
of 25 cards. Look for ADRSBK33.ZIP on a board near you. The file is over
200K. I mention this so you will know if the second ZIP of the DEMO is
enclosed. The actual EXE file in uncompressed form is relatively small.
