A few talky tips about Theives from Email.

Thief: If you take a thief, you are being a fool. Take a ranger,
ninja, or bard instead. Just as effective in thievery and a whole
lot more useful in other situations.

FWIW I have found that no one is as good as a thief at theivery for
the first several levels. I tried a race between a ninja, a ranger,
a bard, and a thief to see who could gain skullduggery fastest. When
they were all 3rd level, the thief had a skill level of ~25, while
the other three all had ~12. So, if you want to develope thieving
ability fast, the thief is best.

I *hate* having chests blow up in my face, so I start with a thief
for a few levels, and then change him to something else. The theif
gains levels the fastest, so this doesn't take long.

The amount to go to second level for the classes is:

F 1000
Mage 1250
Pr 1100
Th 900
Rang 1300
Alch 1150
Bard 1250
Val 1150
Bis 1500
Lord 1300
Sam 1400
Monk 1400
Ninja 1500
Psi 1250

To gain higher levels, the amount is a power of two times the amount
listed above, so going from 5th to 6th level for a Lord is
1300 * 2^3.
