[1] On the Net by David LeBlanc

A bit later than normal this week, lot's of distractions. I was coming
off vacation last Sunday and did the flea market thing. I was up at 3:30
and spent until about 2:00 P.M. in direct sun hawking my wares and netted
about $200. Of that $56 was from old comics. That night I got sick
around 9:00 and was too weak to get out of bed on Monday. Bad enough
trying to get back in the groove after 2 weeks off, but then my brother
decides to join the world of modem communications. He bought a 28.8
Boca internal and tried to install it himself. I have spent a good part
of this week on the phone with him, reinstalling software,
trouble shooting config files and generally burning up my free time
getting him back where he was before he started. He eventually got to
the right people at BOCA who told him to swap it for another and then
talked him through the installation. Next, would you believe, he did not
even know the line he had it plugged into was dead? The line we talk on
is off a local PBX so he knew he had to use the other, but did not bother
to plug a phone in to see if it worked! I was ready to jump through the
phone when he finally told me. Now with all that behind us, he still
does not have his CD rom drive working right in windows and just found
out his speakers no longer work. So it goes.

Anyway, I am finally getting time to finish up this issue. We have a
review of comics from Nashville this week, the EISNER and Inkpot winners
and Rich's Revelations for July. A while back I mentioned that my local
retailer, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT, was nominated and made the finals for
the "Spirit of the Industry" award. It turns out a store in California
and one in Australia both won. Wait til next year!

Sigh. I saw the Iron Man/X-O Man of War teamup at a local shop.
Hasn't the novelty worn off yet?
Let's make it more interesting. I propose a team-up of
characters wherein only one walks away back to his/her company. Loser
vanishes off the face of the publishing planet. Loser doesn't come back
from the grave, no one gets to wear the costume, nothing. Dead, dead,
dead!
        Now THAT would sell!
And isn't that the entire point behind these exercises?
My first suggestion is a triangle battle: Iron Man vs. X-O vs.

David --

Thanks for reviewing Steven's Comics - I'm happy to tell you that your
review is the first I've read on my new collection. Thanks for the
positive and encouraging words.

I self-syndicate my strip to alternative and gay papers and every year I
collect the strips in a book form. I'm thinking of dropping the strip as
it's been tough trying to convince papers to run it and those that do run
it to pay me! I won't give up on Steven though, I may do Steven's Comics
as a comic book in a new format and style.

I look forward to your weekly e-mag - keep up the good work!

all the best--

David Kelly

What ever happened to Gerard Jones?
He used to do JLA at DC?
He used to do Prime and other stuff at Malibu.
He used to do a 2099 book at Marvel?
Can anyone on the net tell me : what is Gerard Jones doing now?

[I remember reading a rather long message from him forwarded to the
rec.art.comics newsgroups with him discussing his take on the industry,
right after he decided to take a break from the mainstream. I don't
recall seeing anything by him lately, but maybe one of our readers
does.]

+++++
From: hershst@cpmail-am.cis.columbia.edu
To: comicbknet@aol.com

Surely you jest! DC had no continuity problems in the Silver Age
of Comics! Every issue was like an independent ELSEWORLDS tale.
Characters might were the same costume in two consecutive issues, but
consistency beyond that was NOT expected! Thus, in BRAVE & BOLD, Batman
would be depicted as a dreaded creature of the night. Meanwhile in
BATMAN, he was a friendly super-hero operating in the middle of the day
more like a boy scout leader.
Thus, BRAVE & BOLD # 60 appeared showcasing the TEEN TITANS,
including WONDER GIRL. Until this time, WONDER GIRL was actually WONDER
WOMAN when she was a girl. She could only appear in the same stories as
WONDER WOMAN when photos of WONDER GIRL would be animated (by Bob
Kanigher's fiat, of course. why would Queen Hippolyta even want to do
such a thing?) All of this makes perfect sense when you recall that
WONDER WOMAN was no ordinary Amazon; she was an animated statue!
It was only for the benefit of fans with no imagination at all
that DC decided that the WONDER GIRL appearing in TEEN TITANS was a real
person, distinct from the Diana Prince/WONDER WOMAN character. Even so,
it was not until issue #22 of the bi-monthly title (yes there were
bi-monthly titles in the "pre-Crisis" DC Universe) that Dc bowed to fan
pressure and related the origin of Donna Troy.
The more I think about it, the more I feel comics were more fun
in the old days, when they did not have to splash the logo "ELSEWORLDS"
on the cover or paint every inside page to tell an enjoyable story.

[heh, heh! On that note, we enter into another trivia challenge. Lots of
people did not identify the right *name* for Paste Pot Pete, preferring
instead his later identity. While this did not keep anyone from winning
the prize this time, I am a stickler for such detail. If I ask for
original I mean back then, not now. . . and visa versa.]

[TRIVIA CONTEST]
Last week's question: Name the *Original* Frightful Four.

In reverse order:
From: kjobe@wmcstations.com (Ken Jobe)

I'm probably way too late on this one, but, hey, it was a busy week.
The original Frightful Four are: the Wingless Wizard, the Sandman, the
Trapster (or Paste-Pot Pete, if you prefer) and Medusa.

From: Pest23

I probably won't be first with this, but the original group has always
held a cheesy charm for me, so here goes:

>Name the original Frightful Four.
The Wizard
Sandman
Paste Pot Pete (also known as The Trapster)
Medusa (of the Inhumans)

This may not be the original line-up, but it's the earliest one I
remember

From: Rob & Cindy Collier <robcolli@iccom.com>

the wizard
the sandman
the trapster (paste-pot-pete)
medusa

From: Mike Sawin <msawin@magellan.cloudnet.com>

the original FrightfulFour consisted of the Wizard, Medusa, Sandman,
and Paste-pot Pete.

From: eli@FreeMark.COM (Eli Zweifach)

I may be a little late getting this in since I just returned
from a great San Diego Con.
 The original Frightful Four were:

The Wizard, Paste-Pot Pete, Medusa and Sandman.

From: desada@edc1.edc.ca (Desabrais, Dave)

I don't know if I'm eligible to win yet or not, but I'll take a quick
guess off the top of my head for fun. (By the way, I forgot to let you
know I got my Cheesy Prize and it was great!! Thanks)

The original Frightful Four was The Wizard, The Trapster, Sandman, and
Medusa

From: ThorIsCool

Finally, a question in my area of expertise! The original Frightful
Four consisted of The Wizard, Sandman, Paste-Pot Pete, and Medusa, and
they first appeared in Fantastic Four #36

> From: nexus1@soho.ios.com
>
> The original Frightful Four: The (Mad) Thinker, The Sandman, The
Trapster
> (Paste Pot Pete), and Medusa.

From: vroy@loginius.com

Ok the FF were: Medusa, The Wizard, The Trapster and Sandman.
Vince

From: edcatibs@linknet.net (Ed Catibog)

the original fright ful four were composed of : The Wizard, the Fixer,
the Sandman and Medusa of the Inhumans.

From: MYGN71A@prodigy.com ( RICH BOWMAN)
Date: Sat, 6 Jul 1996 07:57:56,

The Original Frightful Four?

The Wizard, Medusa, The Sandman, and The Trapster (Paste Pot Pete)

[Well this was not the first correct answer. That is from our old
friend the "Answer Man", Bill de Haan who claims he had to get back after
missing the John Byrne trivia question.]

From: bdh@deus.com (William de Haan)
Date: Sat, 06 Jul 1996 05:30:21

David LeBlanc's evil twin Skippy writes:

name to the Trapster in the first Frightful Four story in FF #38).

[3] CBN Insider - News, gossip and rumors from around the industry

Everyone's out to make a buck!
Part 1: I have read reports that Rob Liefeld was hawking black and
white signed ashcans of his Captain America at the convention for $5
each. I have read just as many reports of people who couldn't be bothered
or stifled laughs as they handed it back and said, "no thanks." BUT I
am sure the majority who saw it thought they got a bargain and would make
some dough on it. GIVE THEM AWAY ROB! You'll make enough off of Marvel
on this deal anyway. Don't perpetuate the killer of comics - greed!

RIKKI ROCKETT'S 'NO MERCY' comics announced Saturday night after the San
Diego Comic Con at a private party at the SAN DIEGO PLANET HOLLYWOOD the
following. Actor Charlie Sheen has invested in No Mercy Comics
recently. An avid comic reader he believes that the Company is the most
innovative in years. NO Mercy comics will be officially doing the
ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP COMICS. Artist have not yet been choosen
and although it's unclear how many issues will be produced, Rikki plans
on doing at least 6 highlighting each of the more well-known fighters.
David Issacs at SEG Sports and Don Gold at Viacom, who are united in the
UFC productions confirmed this announcement. NO MERCY Comics and CHAOS
Comics will be doing a joint production venture of the No Mercy comics
title Sisters of Mercy starting in January. The 1st issue will be a 16
page comic in January, followed by March, April, May, June and July full
comics of this mini-series.

For those of you who may not have heard it, it was announced that Mike
Parobeck passed away on Wednesday, July 3rd. Mike is known for his
artwork on the Impact line of comics, Batman Adventures, and the most
recent version of the JSA.

Everyone's out to make a buck, Part 2:
Last week, Dark Horse shipped the latest chapter of Frank Miller's Sin
City: That Yellow Bastard and then issued a recall of the entire lot.
They told dealers to just send back the covers and they would get
replacement books FREE. The problem was in the printing, or the paper.
In some of the copies the yellow came out more green (That Pea Green
Bastard?) so they decided to reprint and replace them. Some dealers,
like mine, decided to give away the remaining interiors, to anybody who
wanted them, after offering them to subscribers of SC:TYB. Other dealers
used them to stimulate interest in non readers of that book. Other
dealers kept the books anyway and sold them at cover, advising the
customers that if they wanted the fixed issues they would hold one when
they came in, as they just re-ordered all new copies. These are all
acceptable solutions, and ethical at that. One message I read today had
a dealer telling customers that this was a RARE edition since it had
been recalled and they wouldn't be able to find it anywhere else in the
city. He had them, *the original **defective** issues, on sale for $25
each the same week they came out all the time pushing the fact they would
go way up in price. All the speculators are not dead yet it seems.

+++++
From this week's CSNsider in Comic Shop News #473, lots of stuff we
already told you about, plus . . . John Buscema, at Marvel since 1966,
has retired . . . meanwhile Sal Buscema and Tom Palmer have also left
Marvel, but look for them elsewhere in the near future, perhaps the
Distinguished Competition? . . . Walt Disney has acquire the
"Starblazers" rights with designs on a live action 1998 movie . . . DC is
considering putting out "animation style" comics based on the success of
Batman and Robin Adventures, but these wont be of characters with running
cartoons. . . Millennium COmics says Uma Thurman has agreed to star in a
"VIGIL" movie, a vampire detective comic. . .CSN says that the movie
version of Dark Horse's "X", appears on the verge of happening. . .
a compendium of Batman collectibles and memorabelia is slated for
November from Little Brown & Co. It will be a 276 page, oversized
hardcover by Chip Kidd. . . Topps is planning to put out X-Files graphic
novels. . . meanwhile Chris Carter's "Millennium" is being sought after by
comic companies betting on another hit when the TV series debuts in the
X-Files old Friday time slot.

[4] Rich's Revelations July by Rich Johnston

RICH'S REVELATIONS BACK IN BLIGHTY

Home, sweet home. America was great, but I wouldn't like to live there...
I might lose that accent. But I'll definitely be back. I've got
invitations...

(I mean, like, even on the plane home! Is there nothing that American
women won't do for a British accent? What are you all... sick?)

Hey did you know that Trent (Creed) Kanuga, that Snowman guy (Mark
Martin? Matt Martin?), the artist of Strangelove and a number of
associated creators are going to set up their own company ala Image? No?
Well neither does anyone else, until now. A Rich's Revelations
exclusive.

If Jeff Mason is reading, you owe me dinner, and "apthykt".

Creator Moves:

Spider-plan, Spider-plan, does anything a spider-plan can. Sal Buscema
and Mark Bagley off. Luke Ross on Spec, Ron Garney on Amazing, to be
replaced by Steve Skroce. Mike Wieringo on Sensational, JR JR still on
Adjectiveless.. Roger Cruz replaces Skroce on X-Man. Andy Kubert finishes
on X-Men 60. Cheers from the peanut gallery. Carlos Pacheco comes on from
60 on occasion, Bob Wiacek inks.

Andy Kubert on Ka-Zar, with Cam Smith and writer Mark Waid. Pollina off
X-Force, on X-Men: Rise of Apocalypse. Harry Castrillo on X-Force. Hitch
on Excalibur and its a race for Kavanagh or Milligan to Excalibur writer.
But could there be a newcomer entry in the race? Paul O'Brien knows, but
he'd better keep schtum about it.

Lobdell writes both X-books, with Loeb helping scripting. Ostrander,
Kavanagh or Hanna may move to X-Men soon. Adam Kubert off Wolverine, Val
Semiecks on. Rick Leonardi on Cable, Ian Churchill off. Ron Garney on
Silver Surfer. Ghost Rider reprieved from cancellation.

And maybe Val Seniecks off Wolverine soon and Marc Silvestri on.

Chuck Dixon off Cap America, to join Waid and Perez in Liefeld's dump
bin. Jeph Loeb on.

Watch for JH Williams III ...

Image camps hold forts. Now that Silvestri has gone, Wildstorm Studios
is holding its own against the combined will of McFarlane, Liefeld and
Larsen. How long can they hold up?

Justice League news... Mark Millar and Grant Morrison's Aztek The
Ultimate Man will join Morrison's Justice League as of issue 8. But while
JL will see him joining the team, in Aztek, we see him go through a
bizarre masonic ritual to join the tam. Aztek will expose the hypocrisy
and the conspiracies so far hidden from view in the DC Universe. Old time
traditionalists should really avoid this book and remain content.

And to recap some of San Diego news, Grant Morrison on JLA/WildCATS...
cool huh?

Back at home in London. Ahhh. Damn, my accent isn't special anymore, and
my most recent g-f has gone back home to Australia... anyone in London
interested? If not, I might turn desperate and go over to one of those
rec.singles things...

[6] REVIEW: Volunteer Comics by David LeBlanc

This week I get to tell you about yet another self-publishing effort,
this time from a group of creators in Tennessee (ain't that the Volunteer
State?) Larry Underwood made contact on FIDO Comics and sent along their
first collaborative effort called "Volunteer Comics Summer Lineup '96" as
well as his mini-comic "Killer Whale". For the record, the first costs
$3 including postage per issue and is full size Black and White with
color covers and the B&W mini is $1. Get both by writing to:

Volunteer Comics, 4912 Monterey Drive, Nashville, TN 37220

SUMMER LINEUP

The text says these guys from various local companies wanted to get
together and create on book to showcase the talent that abounds in
Nashville. What they created was a pretty nice anthology with a variety
of products that will interest most people. First is "The only thing we
have to fear", by Jason Alexander. The art is very much a manga style
and reminiscent of Tank Girl at first glance. It starts with Rene
breaking out of a padded cell after we see she has prosthetic
enhancements and a plate with antennae on the shaved side of her head.
We see the world is not too pretty, with her walk through an urban
marketplace. Most of the action takes place in a bar as bounty hunters
try to bring her in. I must say the art is very stylish and the mystery
of how this strange future came about and how it operates leaves you
wanting more after the 8 pages here.

Next is J.O.N.A.H. which stands for Joint Organism Nocturnal Alien
Humanoid. The art and story are by John Jordan. If you say that title a
few times and think about it, you understand the main, really the *only*
humanoid in the story. We see a splash down on a planet and a handsome
astronaut emerges in a steamy primordial swamp on his mission of
destruction. His foe finds him and soon grows to monstrous proportions,
a seeming quick fate for our hero. Well he bounces back from a seeming
fatal wound and at dusk (that must be that Nocturnal bit) he undergoes a
metamorphosis to better go after the bug eyed monster. But why does he
come here just to fight some lizard in a swamp? Well, I can't give away
the whole story now. I like the art in this one as it is clean and
dynamic. It is not cluttered up but has significant detail were it
counts. John could easily be drawing for the big guys some day as the
style is easy on the eyes and tells the story.

Next up, Larry Underwood's "Killer Whale". This is the story of
fry-cook Willie Finn who ate a fish that had consumed a radioactive
particle dropped by a nuclear power plant employee who was attempting to
catch a donut. (I watch the Simpsons so I know this could really happen!)
So he steals the restaurant mascot whale suit and becomes Killer Whale!
Naturally he can swim real fast and hold his breath long as well as make
high jumps out of the water, and his prowess on land is pretty good as
well. In this episode some computer hardware gains a life of its own
and is terrorizing the local computer store. The leader is a Pent-E-Yum
986 aided by a Newt-Ton and a floppy disk. Pent has power to take over
electronics and has CDs and disks flying through the air and mice
tangling up our hero. How he stops them is the gist of the story. It
is all in fun, and a good break from the first two stories. Larry puts
a lot of effort into the art and it shows in every aspect. The people
are well drawn and the silly computer stuff has a Milk and Cheese look
to it. Actually, I much preferred the origin story in the mini-comic,
but this one is a great addition to the anthology. Could this be a
comical Concrete?

Next we have Sherard Jackson's "Semantic Lace". This one was a bit
harder to get into. The artwork is very busy, in fact a bit too busy in
places. In action sequences there is lots of detail and speed lines and
a bit too much shadow, as well as reverse video (white on black) text;
all resulting in a difficult to interpret picture at first. Simpler
scenes, like the two lovers discussing their work, is straight forward
and gets the job done in good fashion. The story, once I got into it is
intriguing, and ironic. The girl is in the Mossad and her lover's soul
is kidnapped and implanted in a rampaging manga-bot and it is her sad
duty to bring him down by any means. This was probably the story with
the most passion and thought to it in the book. It left me thinking
and, if not for the art, it would have been the best.

Paul Mellette's "Battleground Earth" has a more realistic and easy to
follow style of drawing to it.This one is about demons of sorts luring
people to hideous deaths by taking on human form. As we look in on the
next intended victim about to put one over on the bad guys. Soon he and
a bystander are transformed into a winged strongman and a fully armored
warrior and they are then joined by a mystic of some sort. This one is
full of action, and geared to the whole magic and sorcery stuff. It is
not my favorite type of story but is well done here.

There is a one page story by C. Hughes Shelton, written by Larry
Underwood, printed as winner of a contest and it too deserves a close
look.

I did not find much fault with this book as a whole. The bits and
pieces shown indicate some promise from these guys and I do hope they
keep at it. I also hope they try their hand at other types and styles as
well. Looking at the cover again I am reminded there is a lot of
violence in 4 of 5 of the stories. Killer Whale is my pick of the lot.
Get the mini-comic ashcan where Will gets his powers and we see what
will probably the making of a great arch villain. It is fun and very
well done.

[B] How to join the COMIC BOOK NETWORK (CBN)

You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occur in the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....

Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the continent and
the world, many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you
have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal
Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the
many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs).
Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book
Network...

There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms
of entertainment.

If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if
not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK
packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline
mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then
upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS.
There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer
system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation
than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are
free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to
get started.

These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)

So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of
message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like
sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online
games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system
sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most
powerful being in a online adventure!

And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
