[1] The Bullpen by Ryan Brewster

Be sure to give the WWW page a look in the next few weeks, as I am
going to be adding a few little enhancements here and there. One of these
will be a hotlist, so you can find other great comics stuff on the
web! Send e-mail to Xenozoid@cris.com if you know of a cool site that
I should add...

The network is still in transition and, as such, things aren't as smooth
as they could be. Forgive the brief issues we've had lately... we still
pack it with info!! :)

Best,

1. Industry News ----------------------------------------------------------

Marvel To License Characters To Image:

12/2/95 - All-but-confirmed allegations circulating among the various
information services claim that Marvel will be licensing some of their more
popular characters to be produced by Image Comics' Extreme and Wildstorm
studios.

The actual books mentioned to be produced are still uncertain. One rumor
claims that four titles would be produced: Fantastic Four, Captain
America, Avengers and Iron Man. The Incredible Hulk and Thor would be
cancelled with their top billing heroes becoming supporting characters in
one of the licensed titles. Another rumor has Extreme Studios responsible
for Captain America, Avengers and Thor with Wildstorm producing Hulk, Iron
Man and Fantastic Four.

The deal is for one year work-for-hire, outside contractor arrangement, with
significant penalties for missed shipping dates. They will remain "Marvel"
comics, but will be produced by the Image Studios.

The first Wildstorm/Extreme-produced books are tentatively scheduled for
release in September 1996.

** Big Spoiler Warning **

Avengers Traitor Revealed:

11/29/95 - It was reported in the Hype! Comics Cafe (http://www.hype.com)
that the traitor in the current Crossing storyline will be none other than
Iron Man. Tony Stark is also rumored to be in fact a Life Model Decoy
planted to help Mantis get revenge on the Avengers. That would mean that the
Tony Stark since Iron Man #6 or 7 has been a phony...

WildStorm 2099...?:

11/30/95 - WildStorm's new DefCon 4, to be released in February, deals with
the future of WildStorm. Set in 2131 and 2200, the story will feature
completely new characters created by Mat Broome. Mat Broome will write the
series, with Jeff Mariotte's help, and Broome will also provide the artwork
with help from Edwin Rosell. The series will last four issues.

Diamond To Offer 800-Number Location Service

12/2/95 - Starting in January 1996, Diamond Comic Distributors will offer an
800-number service for locating nearby comic specialty shops. After
punching in your zip code, the service will locate the comic shop(s) in your
area.

Wizard Hits the Web:

11/30/95 - The Wizard: The Guide To Comics and Inquest magazines from Wizard
Press are now available in online form at the URL:
http://www.wizardpress.com. Wizard World has been a feature of America
Online for some time now, but has been unaccessable by web surfers.

Foot Soldiers March In January:

11/30/95 - In a star-studded debut issue, Dark Horse will introduce a new
comic-book series combining science-fiction elements with the superhero
genre. Alex Ross of Marvels fame will provide the cover artwork, and the
issue will contain pinups by Mike Mignola, Mike Allred, Paul Chadwick,
and John Romita, Sr. Michael Avon Oeming will pencil the story art with Jim
Krueger writing.

Monkeyman & O'Brien Special Ships in Feb.:

11/28/95 - The long-anticipated, much-delayed Monkeyman & O'Brien series
should be released sometime in 1996; but in the meantime, Arthur Adams'
Monkeyman & O'Brien story, originally published as a backup feature to Mike
Mignola's Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, will see print again in a Monkeyman
& O'Brien special. The 32-pg Monkeyman & O'Brien special will ship February
27th.

Oh My Goddess! Special in February:

11/25/95 - Oh My Goddess! Special: Mystical Engine will ship February 6th.
The original one-shot was written by Kosuke Fujishima, and will be
translated to English by Alan Gleason and Toren Smith. The black & white
32-pg special will retail for $2.95.

Sin City Sins Again:

11/30/95 - Frank Miller draws and writes a new 6-issue Sin City miniseries
beginning in February. Sin City: That Yellow Bastard isn't for the little
guys.

Entity Publishes Vortex:

12/2/95 - Entity Comics will publish a color re-presentation of Matt
Martin's Vortex series. The 6-issue Vortex: The Second Coming will contain
full digital color and new covers by Martin, and will begin shipping in
March 1996.

The original black-and-white miniseries was published by Hall of Heroes.

Twist & Shout to Publish Moore Proposal:

11/30/95 - Alan Moore's lengthy DC proposal for Twilight, which has been
making circulations among the various information services, may be published
by Twist & Shout Comics. It will be solicited in April '96, if the legal
arrangements can be ironed out.

Tarentino Film Licensed:

11/30/95 - Tekno-Comix has secured the rights to adapt Quentin Tarentino's
new film From Dusk Till Dawn in graphic novel format. From Dusk Till Dawn
boasts music from The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (if that's still his
name...?), Madonna, Hootie & The Blowfish and U2.

Primitives #3
by Steve Campbell, Larry Merrill and Steve Addlesee
SpareTime Studios

Web Homepage: http://www.infi.net:80/~larry21/

Primitives is a quarterly comic about a five physically and mentally
enhanced survivors of a dozen or so Cro-Magnon hunters that were abducted
from Earth by the alien Kreel. They return to find the earth in the state
that it is, which is an over-populated, polluted planet.

This book is not, by any means, Captain Planet and the Planeteers. It
entertains while it stands behind its message. This issue is particularly
interesting, as we learn a bit more about the background of a few of the
characters. And yes, it's even got its own "Bad Girl", though we have yet to
learn who she is.

The art is greatly enhanced by the gray tones added by Brian Bailie and his
computer. Though it is black and white, it avoids the bland look, that many
b&w comics have, with its computer shading. I'd love to see this book
colored.

A good read with a strong message. Worth tracking down.

Agony Acres #1
by Chuck Satterlee and Ronn Stern
A2 Entertainment - $2.95 (Full Color)

Shipping in April 1996

Agony Acres is set in the somewhat distant future... the same kind of
setting as the Marvel 2099 comics. It seems to be mainly about a futuristic
sport played in virtual realms, but is also a kind of futuristic detective
comic. Overall, it's a very original premise; I have never read a comic
quite like Agony Acres.

The story is compelling, and moves along at a reasonable pace. I didn't have
trouble following the plot. The art is very crisp; very nice. It will look
beautiful in full color, and Norm Breyfogle's Oneironauts/Casey pinup is
gorgeous.

The book looks to be a winner. It could appeal to super-hero and alternative
comics fans alike. Definitely one you should bug your retailer for.

* Mild Spoilers *

Pheonix Resurrection: Genesis

by Ian Edgington & Dan Abnett, Darick Robertson, Mark Pacella, Greg Luzniak
& Rob Haynes and Tom Wegrzyn, Art Thibert, Larry Stucker, Bob Wiacek &
Philip Moy.

Malibu Comics

Coming Soon...

From the few preview pages that I got of this book, it looks to be an okay
read. At its simplest, it is a way to bring the highly successful Merry
Marvel Mutants to the Ultraverse.

Generation X's "Gate", a fellow introduced in Generation X awhile back and
still remains somewhat of a mystery, is the dimension-breacher of this
storyline. He appears to be the bridge between Pheonix, the Marvelverse and
the Ultraverse, from what I've seen so far.

If you buy comics for the art, this one looks to be a winner. Darick
Robertson and Tom Wegrzyn's pages are the only ones I've seen, but they look
gorgeous in black-n-white. With Malibu's computer coloring, I can only
imagine the possibilities. The other pencillers lined up are also highly
capable artists.

However, if you aren't easily seduced by gloss & glamour, you'll probably
only like this if you're an X-Men or Ultraverse fan.

[4] Suspended Animation, by Michael Vance

"SOLD!" shouts the auctioneer, "to the man holding his hand over the
little boy's mouth!"
Yep, it's _HIM_ again in DENNIS THE MENACE: HIS FIRST 40 YEARS,
(Abbeville Press, 220pgs).
Hank Ketcham's forever-five year old has brought a chuckle or a tear
to millions of readers world-wide since 1951.
It's no surprise that this delightful collection represents comic
strips at their best.
Nor is there much surprise in why Dennis the Menace is so incredibly
popular, outside of the fact that Ketcham is one of the greatest
cartoonists in the world.
Dennis is Everyboy, full of cockiness born of ignorance and inexper-
ience, of endless curiosity and energy.
This essential "boyness" is so well understood that readers easily
fill in the unwritten and undrawn situations _preceding_ a punchline.
   As example:
A room full of adults hide their laughter behind a hand or turn
away from the embarasses faces of mom and pop. Hands firmly on hips,
Dennis exclaims, "If what I said wasn't funny, why is everybody tryin'
not to laugh?"
Dennis the magician holds out a fan of playing cards as his pop
begins to pick one. "Take a card!" Dennis prompts. "Any card!"
   "NOT THAT ONE!"
As pop shows a new wrist watch to mom, Dennis observes, "It doesn't
look unbreakable to ME!"
This is the stuff of real life seen through the eyes of a man who
loves life and people, the stuff that makes gritty superheroes seem
silly.
And this treasure was discovered in the remainders bin of a major
chain book store for $2.99, about the price of many comic books! It
was probably originally priced at $15 - $20.
   Highly recommended...
   at just about any price.

(Mr. Vance is a professional writer having written for numerous
magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has
appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by
Comico, Renegade, Innovation and Rip Off Press. SUSPENDED
ANIMATION appears in 14 publications reaching 214,000 readers
in the U.S., Ireland and Portugal.)

[6] Join in the fun!

You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....

Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have
the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation
software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
conversation.

If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure,
and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in
their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over
the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.

These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN 75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)

So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types
of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget
online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming
the most powerful being in a online adventure!

And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!

Best,

--Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire.
