Northern NH's spot for online Multiplayer DOOM & DOOM I
 MODEM GAMELINK BBS 603-636-9807

================================================================================

I am putting together this little text file to help new users get
aquainted with setting up a multiplayer game at the MODEM GAMELINK BBS.

First of all, you will need SirDOOM to play multiplayer DOOM here.
You can obtain this file as (sirdoom.zip) from the -free library....
Obviously you need DOOM! The most played one is DOOM II though. You
need to get v1.9 a since everyone is id Softwares latest upgrade..

Patches are availiable free in Library A09
<all patches are released from id Software>
	       Different versions require different patches
We carry ALL Official id Software releases

If you have an earlier version, the connection won't work. You can get
these patches here in the patch library. If you are not sure what version
you have, load DOOM II and check the top red bar on load up screen. It will
either say v1.666 or v1.17 or v1.17a. Version1.9 is the version you need
to play here .Get the patches from the file area. There are several patches
so if one does not work you will need to use another or upgrade in steps.
IE:1.66-1.7-1.7a-1.9 and so on.Be patient, it can take 30 minutes or
so when you do the patch.

Start with a clean install of Doom {you do have the original still don't
you}If not try to remove the added wads you may have laying around in the
Doom II dir. Type dir *.wad in your Doom II dir. Doom2.wad should be all
alone. If not move the others to a different dir.

Like I mentioned earlier, there is a patch to upgrade to v1.9 and it is
free. Some of you may need to use more than one patch depending on what
version you have.To play 4 players, all must have the same version.

Ok, now you need to log onto the bbs. I used my Term program that I
normally use to connect, log on, and look around. You can use Sirdoom
if you want, but don't expect to download files with that. I use my Term
program for regular bbs use and Sirdoom when I am looking for some action!

MODEM GAMELINK BBS uses Major BBS software v6.25 and Sirrus Game
Connection to bring you online DOOMing.

There is a .doc file included with Sirdoom so please read that for detailed
information! Basically in a nut shell, unzip Sirdoom in its own directory.
Like I mentioned, DOOM II is the popular one here and most users are
 playing it.

Once it is unzipped, type Sirdoom and you will be in Terminal mode.
ALT-Z will display the help window. ALT-C to setup your configs. At the
Modem Setup push F2, this will open a modem list, pick the one closest
to yours. Can't find yours try the hayes compatible. Save and exit.
Type ALT-i, this will either give you an OK, Error, or nothing.
 You want an OK.

Type ALT-D, this will open a dialing window.
Type ALT-E and enter Modem Gamelink 788-2213 19200 baud. Your comm port,
IRQ <if an odd one like mine> Long distance users we are area code 603.
Save and exit your edits. Check with an ALT-i. Ya get an ok ?
Alt-D select Modem Gamelinks entry to your dialing directory. Press enter
logon as normal.Once connected, you can then select G for Game Connection. Once in there, it is self explanatory on the selections.
Setup your game in the teleconference area. This will save you credits as
Game Connection is a surcharge area to help support the extra equipment
needed for this type of connection..

Once you begin chatting with other players you will set up your game.
Whether you want to play an external WAD or any parameter.

To play something other than the regular DOOM II, you need to edit
your ARGS LINE (arguments) in Sirdoom. Simply, while online, press
ALT-C and then go to "set up DOOM" you will see some obvious selections
and at the bottom, "args" that is where you would enter the following.

-nomonsters (used almost 100% of the time, so you need it)
-file <name>.wad (used if everyone is going to play a WAD)
-warp # (used to start a different level ie #7 = Map 07)

A typical line would look like this
 -nomonsters -file xxxx.wad

You then will have to select "Save and Exit" in the alt-c menu to get
 back.
Note: Sometimes Sirdoom will lock up so simply alt-x and select Y,
then retype Sirdoom and that should put you back in the bbs. Don't
 disconnect.

When playing do not drop carrier on purpose during the game. If you
want to leave simply tell the other players. ( T during DOOM let's you
chat), then hit esc and exit DOOM normally.
There are several other things you may want to do such as read the help
bulletin in the main menu of the bbs. It explains how to use the bbs.
Also read the .doc in Sirdoom.
Sometimes you may find yourself the "Moderator or Host" don't panic,
someone will usually guide you through. But if your told to start the
game, then you would type "/start" (no quotes) the the host will select
alt-s to get the game going.
I hope this text makes it easier for you to get going with Multiplayer
DOOM. It takes a couple of tries, but after that it is easy!
