NOTE - You should get the help file from ALL servers that you use i.e.
gopher, agora, ftp, bitftp, etc. by putting help in the body of a
message. There may be subtle differences that are not readily
apparent. I have the HELP file from every server that's around.

======================================================================

=2= FTP sites via gopher

Host=gopher.UMontreal.CA
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
Host=gopher.panam.edu
Host=gopher.uiuc.edu
Host=ras.ncc.go.jp

EXAMPLE - I'll use this FTP site: ftp.cdrom.com

Send a message to a gopher server, using one of the HOSTS above, with
this in the body of the message:

#
Name=ftp.cdrom.com
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/
Host=****use one of the hosts from above****

This will be returned to you (parts snipped for brevity's sake):

<snip>
      35. ls-lR (36977k) [Sep 18 05:32].
      36. ls-lR.gz (5630k) [Sep 18 05:33].
      37. pub [Aug 24 17:12]/
      38. usr [Apr  3 02:23]/
      39. wcarchive.configuration (.0k) [Sep 18 05:00].

<snip>

#
Name=ls-lR (36977k) [Sep 18 05:32]
Numb=35
Type=0
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/ls-lR
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu (whatever host you used will show here)
#
Name=ls-lR.gz (5630k) [Sep 18 05:33]
Numb=36
Type=0
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/ls-lR.gz
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
#
Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12]
Numb=37
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/pub/
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
#
Name=usr [Apr  3 02:23]
Numb=38
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/usr/
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
#
Name=wcarchive.configuration (.0k) [Sep 18 05:00]
Numb=39
Type=0
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/wcarchive.configurationconfig@
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu

If you then wanted to get the pub and usr directory then send to the
gopher server the portion from the return message that you desire. In
this case, it's the pub and usr blocks.

#
Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12]
Numb=37
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/pub/
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
#
Name=usr [Apr  3 02:23]
Numb=38
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.cdrom.com@/usr/
Host=gopher-gw.micro.umn.edu
------------------------------------------------------
NOTES:

1. You can remove the Numb= line as this is unnecessary.
2. If you send back a lot of these, put an identifying line in the
Name= line. For instance, I add from which location I'm receiving the
file.  Example: Name=pub [Aug 24 17:12] (ftp.cdrom.com)
Whatever you put in the Name= line will be in the subject of the
returned message.
3. As you can see from above, the ftp site is placed in the Path=
line with ftp: placed before it and @/ added after.
4. Gopher servers can be touchy. So if you are returned an empty
message - TRY AGAIN. Use a different gopher server and/or send the
message at a different time of day.
5. If there is a (.0k) next to the Name as in Numb=39 above, it means
there's nothing there.
6. Some FTP sites may not be accessible.
7. If you know of other Hosts that perform this service, please email
me so that I can include them in future updates.

======================================================================

=3= WWW binary files via gopher

EXAMPLE - I'll use the following URL: http://www.benjerry.com/library/images/contest/fruit-hunt.gif

Split=150K

#
Name=fruit-hunt.gif
Type=9
Port=80
Path=GET /library/images/contest/fruit-hunt.gif
Host=www.benjerry.com
-------------------------------------------
NOTES:

1. The Split= command tells the gopher the maximum size of the messages
it returns (default 27K per message). If it's a large binary file,
set the Split= command for whatever your server will accept.
2. The above works with any binary file like .zip, .gif., .jpg, etc.

======================================================================

=4= USENET newsgroup FAQS via gopher and search engine

Here's a way to get, via gopher, the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
in those newsgroups that have them. Send the following to any
gopher server (see =1=) in the body of a message and substitute the
newsgroup's name for the xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz

#
Name=xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/xxxxx.yyyyy.zzzzz/
Host=gopher.utoronto.ca

                        ========EXAMPLE=========

If you wanted the FAQ for alt.best.of.internet and the FAQ for
rec.travel, you'd send:

#
Name=alt.best.of.internet
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/alt.best.of.internet/
Host=gopher.utoronto.ca
#
Name=rec.travel
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/rec.travel/
Host=gopher.utoronto.ca

NOTE: You can retrieve up to 100 FAQS with one message. Each FAQ will
be returned in a separate message to you with a subject that is in the
Name= block. Don't forget the / at the end of the Path= line.
-------------------------
If you want to find out which newsgroups have FAQS, then send this
message to a gopher server:

#
Name=USENET FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) by Newsgroup
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:rtfm.mit.edu@/pub/usenet-by-group/
Host=gopher.utoronto.ca

NOTE: Be forewarned that you will get 17 messages in return each
being 823 lines long or 27K bytes per message unless you specify
a Split= command that is larger.
-------------------------
Here's how to search newsgroup FAQS for a key word. Substitute the
word for XXX below. The * means it will search for the word
specified and any other words containing it. (28 Dec)

TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
BODY: send http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/search-usenet-fa\
qs/form?find=XXX*

Example: To search newsgroup FAQs for the word 'graphic', I would
send this:

send http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/search-usenet-fa\
qs/form?find=graphic*

This would return newsgroups that had graphic, graphics, graphical,
geographic, photographic, etc. in their description

NOTE: The backslash at the end of a line tells the Agora server that
the URL continues on the next line.
======================================================================

=5= USENET newsgroups via gopher - 3 Nov 96

Accessing USENET newsgroups via gopher (3 sections)

Send these 8 blocks in the body of a message to a gopher server:

#
Name=USENET News (Internat'l Centre for Theoret. Physics, Trieste)
Type=1
Port=70
Path=1/news
Host=gopher.ictp.trieste.it
#
Name=USENET News (from Imperial College, UK)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp
Host=gopher.ic.ac.uk
#
Name=USENET News (University of Canberra, Australia)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp
Host=services.canberra.edu.au
#
Name=USENET news (from Palacky University, Czech Republic)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp
Host=risc.upol.cz
#
Name=Usenet News (from Universite du Quebec a Montreal)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp
Host=infopub.uqam.ca
#
Name=UseNet News
Type=1
Port=70
Path=1/News/.UseNet News
Host=pegasus.acs.ttu.edu
#
Name=USENET News
Type=1
Port=4323
Path=nntp
Host=gopher.urz.uni-heidelberg.de
#
Name=Usenet News (from Birmingham University, UK)
Type=1
Port=70
Path=1/Usenet
Host=gopher.bham.ac.uk
#
Name=USENET News (Royal Roads, Canada)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp
Host=news.royalroads.ca
------------------------------------------------------------
This one returns the names in Spanish but the newsgroups are in English.

#
Name=USENET NEWS (from Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain)
Type=1
Port=70
Path=.news/
Host=mirzam.ccc.upv.es

Here's the translation you'll need.

1 - their local list
2 - just a listing of every newgroup they carry
3 - their entire list of newsgroups with corresponding blocks.
4 - keyword search
5 - the entire list of newsgroups from src.doc.ic.ac.uk

If you want to cut to the chase, here's #3 and #5 from the above.

#
Name=Consulta jerarquica de totes les "News"
Numb=3
Type=1
Port=70
Path=exec:-G:/bin/gonnrp
Host=mirzam.ccc.upv.es
#
Name=Consulta jerarquica de totes les "News"
Numb=5
Type=1
Port=70
Path=1/usenet/news-info
Host=src.doc.ic.ac.uk
------------------------------------------
And last on the list, send a message to a gopher server with this as
the subj: sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk
-------------------------------------------
NOTES:

1. In the above, the three from doc.ic.ac.uk might grab from the same
bag but it's always nice to have alternatives.
2. If you find other gopher news servers, please email me so that I
can include them in future updates.
3. These gopher servers for news come and go. Sometimes they're busy,
sometimes they return blank messages, and sometimes they just go
belly up.
----------------------------------------
Using agora servers (see =1= above), you can use these commands:

send news:comp.mail.misc
deep news:comp.mail.misc

The first command above will get you the current headers/subject lines
posted to comp.mail.misc that are carried by that particular agora
server. The second command gets you all of the messages referred to
above. All agora servers do NOT carry the same newsgroups.
======================================================================

=6=

Here are some simple WWW - NS Lookup Gateways. You can enter either
the host name or IP address and it will return the other. Examples:

send http://www.sanet.sk/~milan/cgi-bin/look?query=www.disney.com
will return the IP addresses for www.disney.com.

send http://www.csu.net/cgi-bin/nslookup?203.5.119.1
will return the host name, which happens to be trumpet.com.au

Just substitute either the host name or IP address for XXX and send
any of them in the body of a message to: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp

send http://www.sanet.sk/~milan/cgi-bin/look?query=XXX
send http://ebisu.ec.nagasaki-u.ac.jp/cgi/nslookup.cgi?XXX
send http://gday.bloke.com/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX
send http://www.csu.net/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX
send http://www.dinet.de/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX
send http://www.inetw.net/cgi-bin/nslookup.cgi?XXX
send http://www.nih.go.jp/~jun/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX
send http://www.nobis.com/cgi-bin/nslookup.cgi?XXX
send http://www.uminho.pt/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX
send http://www.virtual.net.au/cgi-bin/nslookup?XXX

NOTE - If you're looking up a domain from an IP address: Some IP
addresses do not have a record in the Domain Name System that matches
them to a domain, even though there is a record associating a domain
with that IP address. For instance, when you get the IP addresses for
www.disney.com and send a query on those addresses, you get back a
"domain not found" message.
-----------------
Try some other lookup services. (28 Dec)

send http://www.switch.ch/cgi-bin/info/whois?Que\
ry=XXX&Server=whois.internic.net
send http://www.switch.ch/cgi-bin/info/whois?Que\
ry=XXX&Server=whois.ripe.net

NOTE: The backslash at the end of a line tells the Agora server that
the URL continues on the next line.

There's more whois servers that you can try; get the list at:
ftp://sipb.mit.edu/pub/whois/whois-servers.list

NOTE: Don't forget to put a \ at the end of all continuation lines,
i.e. the lines that need to be broken. Also, send the message
WITHOUT any empty lines between the send commands.

=======================================================================

=8= Decoding HTML newsgroup returns from Agora

When you receive the following newsgroup HTML garbage from an Agora
or other server stick it in your word processor.

alt.winsock.trumpet</TITLE></HEAD><BODY><H1>Newsgroup:
alt. winsock.trumpet </H1>HERE WE CAN PUT INFORMATION AND EXTRA LINKS
<LI><A HREF="374BQS88.55XML1@mail.idt.net">Re:
HELP &amp;
I WILL GO NUTS IF I CAN'T FIGURE THIS OUT</A> "Bill J." <LI><A
HREF="66vg7u%38wi@news2.h5.usa.pipeline.com">Re:
Come on guys</A> goofy@disney.world<LI><A
HREF="323ce45b.490281655@nntp.ix.netcom.com">Re:
Isn't it a lovely day and should I take a coat!!!!!!!</A> Fred<LI><A

To get the messages that you want, find each HREF= and look between
the quotes. This is the message ID# that comes BEFORE the message
header. So, if I wanted the message that starts Re: HELP I WILL GO
NUTS... then I would send this command to Agora:

send news:374BQS88.55XML1@mail.idt.net

Similarly, if I wanted the message Re: Isn't it a lovely day...
I'd send this to agora:

send news:323ce45b.490281655@nntp.ix.netcom.com

NOTE: the message ID# comes BEFORE the message header and is
found between the quotes after HREF=. Just put send news: before
the message ID#.

=======================================================================

=9= Sending messages to mailing lists from another address

To send a message to a mailing list from an address other than the
one from which you are subscribed, follow this example:

Your email/news program must support changing header blocks. If so,
find the header that reads FROM and change it to the address from
which you are subscribed. The server looks at this address to see if
you are subscribed. You can change the REPLY-TO header to the
address to which you want any email replies returned to you.

This can also be used to unsubscribe from a mailing list using one
address but sending the unsubscribe command from another.

=======================================================================

=10= Getting the current weather

To find the current and extended weather use one of the following and
send to an agora server:

A zip code, e.g. 12345, 08544 or 28270,
Or a city and state pair, e.g. Charlottesville, VA or Boston, MA
Or an airport code, e.g. JFK, EWR or LAX.

Examples:

Zip Code - 93437
City and State - Boston, MA
Airport Code - LAX

send http://www.webwx.com/cgi/ww.cgi?region=93437
send http://www.webwx.com/cgi/ww.cgi?region=Boston%2C+MA
send http://www.webwx.com/cgi/ww.cgi?region=lax

NOTES: Separate the city and state with: %2C+
       At this time only U.S. locations are supported.
-----------------------------
This service sends you the weather for your state on a daily basis.

TO: subs@webbers.com
SUBJ: Weather by E-mail Subscription
BODY: Your e-mail address
      State for which weather forecast is desired
=======================================================================

=11= Translating FTP URLs

To translate an FTP URL into something you can send to an FTP mailer
is really quite simple. Look at the following example which shows a
file called xyz.zip at ftp.cdrom.com. Sometimes a URL is shown
without the ftp:// in front.

Example: ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/demos/graphics/xyz.zip

Disregard the ftp:// and take what follows up to the first / and put
it after an open command

open ftp.cdrom.com

Next, take everything from and including the first / up to and
excluding the last slash and put a cd in front of it.

open ftp.cdrom.com
cd /pub/demos/graphics

Lastly, place the name of the file after a get command and add an
extra line with quit on it.

open ftp.cdrom.com
cd /pub/demos/graphics
get xyz.zip
quit

Send it off to your favorite bitftp or ftp server.

=======================================================================

=12= URL Reminder Service (Advanced Service added)

This service will send you an email message each time a URL, that you
specify, changes its contents. Replace AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD with
your email address, XXXXX.YYYYY.ZZZZZ with the URL, and NNNNN MMMMM
with your name.

TO: url-minder@netmind.com
SUBJ: url-minder register
BODY: EMAIL = AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD
      URL = http://XXXXX.YYYYY.ZZZZZ
      NAME = NNNNN MMMMM

You will receive from the URL service a notification that the URL is
now registered with them. SAVE THIS NOTIFICATION. It contains the
information needed to cancel the registration as shown here:

You will need the following code: 10048330 to complete cancellation.

Now, every time that the web page changes, you'll receive an email
message reminding you of same.
---------------------------
To cancel a previously registered URL, replace AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD
with your email address and XXXXX with the cancellation code.

TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
BODY: send http://www.netmind.com/cgi-bin/uncgi/cancel-url?requi\
      red-email=AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD&code=XXXXX

NOTE: Notice the backslash in the body on the first line. This must
be there to show the agora server that the next line is a continuation
of the first. If your cancellation runs into a 3rd line, make sure
you put a \ at the end of the 2nd line as well.
---------------------------
To use their advanced service, substitute your email address in place
of AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD and the URL that you want to register in
place of XXXXX.YYYYY.ZZZZZ

TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
BODY: send http://marvin.netmind.com/cgi-bin/uncgi/minder-register-\
confirmed?verified-email=AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD&required-email=\
AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD&\
url=http:\\XXXXX.YYYYY.ZZZZZ&c\
hange_notice=Y&dead_notice=Y&move_notice=Y&mime_attach=Y&title=Y

You'll get an email message when the page changes, moves or dies and
the page will be attached in HTML format. See NOTE above concerning
back slashes.
------------------------
To get a listing of all the URLs that you have registered, send this
message substituting your email address for AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD

TO: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
BODY: send http://www.netmind.com/cgi-bin/uncgi/minder-list?required-\
email=AAAAA.BBBBB@CCCCC.DDDDD

The following gateways to USENET newsgroups are functioning. Substitute
a USENET group for group.name. They may not support some newsgroups.

=15= Decoding Problems (28 Dec)

If you receive files by e-mail with the first part decoded and the rest
of the parts uuencoded - here is the solution.

1st - Take Part 1 which is usually a ZIP or EXE file and is attached to part 1 of the message. UUENCODE it. Then, using a text editor, delete the lines at the end of the message beginning with the line with just a ' on it and all of the following lines. The line after ' should say "end" and lines after that should say "sum" and some other stuff.

2nd - Still using your text editor, insert or paste at the end of this uuencoded file the rest of the uuencoded parts.

3rd - Save the file as whatever.uu and uudecode the entire file. You then will have a workable ZIP, EXE, etc. file.

Example - you receive a message that states that part 001 of 004 of TEST.ZIP is attached. You then get 3 other messages that are uuencoded Parts 002, 003, 004 of the same TEST.ZIP. Download everything and first take TEST.ZIP and uuencod it. Then, using a text editor, delete all the lines at the end starting with the line that has just a ' on it. Next paste in part 002, followed by part 003 and then part 004. Make sure that you remove any headers from parts 002, 003, 004 so that every line of code begins with a capital M. Next save the text as a text file and uudecode it. The resulting file should be the file that you ordered from your FTP server.

=16= Search for information on specific computer viruses (16 Dec)

Datafellows maintains a virus database which can be searched using:
      http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/?.htm

Substitute for ? above, the first letter of the virus, using lower
case, or a number, if the virus starts with a number. For viruses
starting with an unusual character, use _.

For information on the Word Macro viruses & solutions:
     http://www.datafellows.com/macro/

Another data base is Dr.Solomon's; use this URL:
     http://www.drsolomon.com/vircen/enc/?.htm

Substitute a letter of the alphabet using lower case for ?. For numbers,
use the expression No in place of the ?. Each virus has a specific
removal method referred to at:
     http://www.drsolomon.com/vircen/enc/remove.htm

Seven Locks has another data base and its URL is:
     http://www.sevenlocks.com/Tocv?.htm

Substitute a letter of the alphabet using lower case for ?. For
viruses starting with a digit or symbol use the expression Misc in
place of the ?.

NOTE: Place send before the above URLs and send to either of these: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
getweb@usa.healthnet.org

For more anti-virus info see section =28= of EMAIL4U.

=======================================================================

=17= Using agora to finger an email address (see Note 2)

To finger an email address just add the email address AFTER the ? in
the first 3 URLs below and after the = in the second 2. EXAMPLE: to
finger my address put in the body of a message to: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp
send http://www.mit.edu:8001/finger?4u@interquest.de

send http://www.mit.edu:8001/finger?
send http://cobra.tec.mn.us/cgi-bin/finger?
send http://info.lanic.utexas.edu/cgi-bin/finger?
send http://www-bprc.mps.ohio-state.edu/cgi-bin/finger.pl?\&dest=
send http://xochipilli.com/scripts/finger?\&name=

Three more fingers with a different setup. Put the domain name in
place of the XXX and the user name in place of the YYY. EXAMPLES:
send gopher://interquest.de:79/04u
send http://www.cs.indiana.edu/finger/interquest.de/4u

send gopher://XXX:79/0YYY
send http://www.cs.indiana.edu/finger/XXX/YYY
send http://info.risc.uni-linz.ac.at:70/exec0:YYY@XXX:/scripts/finger

NOTE: These fingers do not work on all email addresses. For some
interesting places to finger, see =12= in 'email4u'. Don't forget
the \ for continuation lines (mentioned elsewhere in this document).

=18= Translation service by email

TO: transnow@gnk-nte.globalink.com
SUBJ: enter a letter that corresponds to the source language, followed by a comma and then a letter for the target language. Use the key below to determine which letters to use.
           E - English
           F - French
           S - Spanish
           G - German
           I - Italian

For example, if you wish to translate from English to Spanish, the
subject line should read:

           SUBJECT: [you type the following] E, S

NOTE: You must translate from or to English. For example, you can't translate from German to Italian.

BODY: Cut the template below and paste it in to your mail.
           FNAME =
           LNAME =
           E-MAIL =
           ADD1 =
           ADD2 =
           CITY =
           STATE =
           COUNTRY =
           ZIP =
           PHONE =
           FAX =
           TEXT =

Fill in the fields. All fields are optional except "E-MAIL" and of
course "TEXT" (your text to be translated), which must be provided.
After the "TEXT" field enter the text you want to translate.

Maximum length of text field is 1500 characters; all other fields 50.

You should receive e-mail from Globalink with the translated text in
about 24 hours. This service MAY NOT WORK at times.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For optimal translations, your source text should
consist of concise, simply constructed sentences, free of ambiguities
and idiomatic expressions. For that reason, basic business style works
significantly better than complex sentences, or metaphorical,
colloquial style. Also, when sending a machine translated draft to
someone, it is usually helpful to send a copy of the original source
text as well so that the reader can refer to it for additional help
in understanding the translation.

The machine translations provided by this complimentary service are
designed to provide only the general meaning of the translated text.
Occasional awkward syntax, inexact phrases, and grammatical errors
must be expected.
