Welcome to AddressMate for Windows!

AddressMate is a multi-purpose address manager for Microsoft
Word, AmiPro, Word Perfect for Windows and other word
processors. It contains a flexible layout designer that handles
labels, envelopes, post cards, business cards, and anything else
that fits through your printer. You can design with text,
graphics, postal bar codes, serialized fields, rectangles, and

-------------------------
1. Purpose of README.TXT
-------------------------

You may be asking yourself why there is a README.TXT file. The
reason is simple. There is a significant amount of lead time
required to produce the manuals. While we attempt to document
everything possible in the manual, there are always things that
are discovered during and after the printing of the manuals.
Any last minute changes that are not in the manual will be
documented in this file.

Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the contents
of this README.TXT file.

-------------------------------
2. Limitations of Demo Version
-------------------------------

This version of AddressMate for Windows is a demo version. The
demo version is intended to be used as a "test drive" so you can
see for yourself how good this product really is.

The demo version has some limitations:

1) The address book is limited to 25 records.
2) Merge printing is limited to 25 records.
3) Multiple copies are labeled as "DEMO".
4) Over 100 pieces of clip art have been removed.
5) CoStar provides limited Technical Support.
6) You will not be advised when new versions are released.

The above limitations are not part of the retail product. When
you upgrade, you will be given a fully-functional product and a
printed manual.

Since this is "Demo-ware", please feel free to distribute it to
your friends, colleagues and other BBS's.

You must distribute AddressMate and its components in its
entirety. You may not, for any reason, distribute individual
files or any portion of this product.

--------------------

6. All Users
----------------

When performing a search for names in the database using the
'Hot Search' feature, you can restart the search by pressing
ESC.

----------------
7. AmiPro Users
----------------

The database engine that comes with AmiPro may cause conflicts
with AddressMate for Windows. If PXENGWIN.DLL is present in
your AMIPRO subdirectory, then you must remove it for
AddressMate to function properly.

Use the File Manager to locate the file PXENGWIN.DLL in your
AMIPRO subdirectory. Delete the file if it is present.

PXENGWIN.DLL is a database engine used by many applications,
including AmiPro and AddressMate. AddressMate ships with an
updated version of PXENGWIN.DLL and installs it in the
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory where it will be available to all
programs.

---------------------------------
8. WordPerfect for Windows Users
---------------------------------

The WordPerfect macros that are shipped with AddressMate for Windows
require WordPerfect version 6.0a or later. If you are using version
5.1, 5.2, or 6.0, you must upgrade to WordPerfect 6.0a in order for
the macros to work. The upgrade from 6.0 to 6.0a is available at no
charge from WordPerfect. Upgrading from 5.1 or 5.2 is not free.
To order any upgrade, call 1-800-451-5151.

---------------------------
9. AddressMate (DOS) Users
---------------------------

If you are upgrading from the DOS version of AddressMate, and
wish to use your existing database from the DOS version, we have
supplied a program called AMEXPORT that will help you move your
database(s) from the DOS version of AddressMate into the Windows
version.

Because of the advanced features now available in AddressMate
for Windows (AfW), your existing database can't be used as-is.
Instead, you need to use the AMEXPORT program located in the
AddressMate for Windows directory (usually C:\AMATE) to convert
your database into an ASCII list that can then be imported by
AfW.

To do this:

1) When you are ready to transfer your database, exit Windows,
and change to your AddressMate subdirectory. If you
accepted the suggestions made while installing the DOS and
Windows products, you'll find that both programs are in the
subdirectory "C:\AMATE". To change to this subdirectory,
    type:

          CD C:\AMATE

2) Next, type:

          AMEXPORT AMATE.DBF

This will convert the AddressMate database used by the DOS
version into a text file called AMATE.TXT. If you have more
than one database file used with the DOS version of AMATE,
you can convert all of them at once by typing:

          AMEXPORT *.DBF

3) Start Windows, and run AfW by double-clicking on its icon.

4) From the File menu, choose "Open/New Database...", and
select the database you wish to add the addresses to. If
you want to create a new database, type in its name, and
    click OK.

5) From the File menu, select "Import Database...", and in the
resulting database, set "List files of Type" to be "ASCII
Text (*.TXT)". Finally, choose the file to be imported
    (AMATE.TXT), and click OK.

6) At the Import/Merge dialog, under Choose Format, select
    "ASCII List", and click OK.

All records will be imported. To check that they were imported
correctly, you may go the AfW Address Book and scroll through
the entries.

--------------------------------
10. Suppressing the Print Dialog
--------------------------------

We have included a way to disable the print dialog box from
displaying each time you print an envelope. By disabling the
print dialog, printing an envelope is reduced to one step,
pushing the print button.

The print dialog will always appear when using the File/Print
Template menu command, and when printing on multi-label sheets.
However, you can make a simple change that will cause the print
button on the tool bar to bypass the print dialog, and
immediately start printing. Since this will default to printing
a single copy of the envelope, should you need multiple copies,
you will need to use the File/Print Template command to activate
the print dialog.

To suppress the print dialog, do the following:

1) Using notepad or some other editor, open AMATE.INI located
    in your C:\WINDOWS directory.

2) Locate the [SETTINGS] section.

3) Change the "SUPPRESS PRINT DIALOG" setting to "YES". This
    line should read as follows:

          SUPPRESS PRINT DIALOG=YES

4) Save the file and exit the editor.

The next time you start AddressMate, the print dialog will no
longer appear. If you need to re-enable the print dialog, then
repeat the above steps, except change the setting to "NO".

------------------------------
11. Adding Multiple Addresses
------------------------------

There may be times when you need to create a mailing list
for employees at XYZ Corporation, all of which are located at
the same mailing address. Re-typing the address for each
person can be tedious and time consuming.

With AddressMate, you can enter the address for a person
once and then duplicate that address as many times as
necessary, boosting your productivity.

To create this type of mailing list, do the following:
1) Enter the name and address of the first employee.
2) Click the SAVE button to save that record.
3) Click the COPY button to copy the address to the clipboard.
4) Click the NEW button to add a new record.
5) Click the PASTE button to insert the saved address.
6) Change the name to that of the next employee.
7) Click the SAVE button to save that record.

Repeat steps 4 through 7 until you have added all the
employees to your mailing list.

           ------------- THE END -------------
