AHA 2940
Common Questions and Answers
Document # 39150

Q: With two AHA-2940 host adapters installed in my system, how do I
determine which AHA-2940 is the primary host adapter?
A: In most PCI based Motherboards, the AHA-2940 in the lowest slot number
   is the Primary Controller.

Q: After installing a Sony SDT-5000E, I have random lock ups on boot
and the system locks when a scan of the SCSI Bus is attempted. The
DAT drive does not appear to work at all.
A: Make sure to disable the "SCSI Bus Reset during IC Initialization" in the
"Advanced Configuration Options" of the AHA-2940 BIOS utility, SCSI
   Select.

Q: Why does my AHA-2940W Fast and Wide SCSI host adapter have
problems finding my single ended narrow devices, when I scan for
devices in the "SCSI Select" utility?
A: Set the option called "Initiate Wide Negotiation" in the "SCSI Device
Configuration" menu of SCSI Select to "NO" for any SCSI ID that a narrow
SCSI device occupies. This option is only for Wide SCSI devices.
NOTE: This option was not listed in the Revision D or earlier of the
   AHA-2940W User's Manual.

Q: When installing a new Operating System to my Hard Drive, I get
random lock ups during disk drive activity or error messages pointing to
hard disk or partition problems. Where should I begin trouble shooting?
A: Check if the Hard Disk has a setting for Termination Power or Unit
Attention. Set Termination Power to come from the Host Adapter or pin 26 of the
SCSI Bus. Unit Attention should be disabled during the Operating System
installation. Additional trouble shooting can be found in Appendix A of
   the AHA-2940/2940W/2944W User's Guide.

OS/2

Q: I have problems installing OS/2 Warp. The install program can not
find the hard Disk or CD ROM to install from, or the system locks
   during file transfers.
A: The following two software updates are needed to install OS/2 Warp on
   some systems:
1)OS/2 Warp driver from the 7800 Manager Set v 1.20.
    2)Fix Pack 17 from IBM.
For information on obtaining Fix Pack 17 from IBM, please consult your
OS/2 User Warp manual. Also, proper termination is essential to a successful
   installation of OS/2 Warp.

Win NT

Q: I am installing NT 3.1 and do not see a compatible driver for the AHA-
2940 card. Where can I get the NT driver?
A: The latest version of the NT 3.1 or 3.5x driver can be found on the 7800
Manager disk version 1.20. To install this driver please follow the directions
in the README.TXT file found in the WINNT directory. Or you may
download the file 7800WNT.EXE from any of Adaptec's On-Line Services.

Q: I am trying to install NT 3.5x on my system, however, it cannot
recognize a SCSI Controller. How do I proceed?
A: If you have a 1.2x BIOS on the AHA-294x, the driver that ships with NT
will not function with that controller. You will have to either download
7800WNT.EXE from our on-line Services (CompuServe, BBS, WEB, FTP), or if
you have the 7800 Family Manger Set v1.20, you can install the AIC78xx.SYS
   driver from it.

Q: On NT 3.5x, I was using the AHA-294x awhile now, however, it went
out on me. I purchase a new AHA-294x with the new 1.2x BIOS on it
and plugged that into my system. Now on boot, I get the blue screen
memory dump with the error In_Accessible_Boot_Device. What do I
   need to do?
A: If your boot partition is FAT, follow course #1. If your boot partition is
   NTFS, follow course #2.

#1) Locate your 7800 Family Manager Set v1.20 diskette or download
7800WNT.EXE from Adaptec's On-Line Services. Boot off a DOS diskette. Go
to your \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory. At this point insert your
7800 Family Manager Diskette and COPY A:\WINNT\3_5\AIC78XX.SYS.
Remove disk from A:\ and reboot.

#2) Locate your 7800 Family Manager Set v1.20 diskette, or download
7800WNT.EXE from Adaptec's On-Line Services. Reinstall NT and then it will
go through a hardware detection. It will not detect you have a SCSI Controller.
Select Other. Insert your 7800 Family Manager Set v1.21 Disk and select the 3.5
       driver.

SCO UNIX

Q: How can I get a 5 1/4" version of the SCO Unix drivers?
A: Located on all Adaptec On Line Services is the file UNIX3TO5.TXT. This
file contains instruction on how to convert the drivers over to a 5 1/4" format. This
procedure assumes you already have the SCO driver disk and that you have a
running UNIX system to perform the upgrade on.

Novell

Q: I am installing a Novell server with the AHA-2940. Are there any
changes that need to be made to the card before installing the server software?
A: Before installing any Novell software, check that the settings "Extended
BIOS Translation for DOS Drives > 1 Gbyte" and "BIOS Support for More
Than 2 Drives(MS-DOS [R] 5.0 and above)" in the "Advanced
Configuration Options" of SCSI Select are disabled. Failure to disable
both of the options will result in problems when trying to install the Novell
   software.

Q: I am tying to enable LUN support for my CD changer under Novell,
what do I need to do?
A: With the latest version of the *.dsk driver for Netware, Multiple LUNs are
now supported. The command line parameter required to turn on the
feature is lun_enable=ff on the aspicd.dsk line.

       eg. load aic7870.dsk
   eg. load aspicd.dsk lun_enable=ff
