The Grammatik Network Pack allows several users to run Grammatik
simultaneously froma Local Area Network (LAN).  The Grammatik
Network Pack is appropriate for most types of local area
networks.

This guide provides all of the information you need to install
and set up Grammatik on a LAN.  For instructions on using
Grammatik to proofread documents, refer to the Grammatik 5 User's
Guide.

Installing Grammatik on a network is easy, but you should know a
little about how your network runs.  You should also make sure
the hardware and software you use on your network will let you
run Grammatik.  The next section explains the hardware and
software requirements your LAN must meet to run Grammatik.

After you verify that your hardware and software meet Grammatik's
requirements, later sections in this guide explain important
changes to the configurations of your workstations you must make,
how to install Grammatik on your network, how to set up
individual workstations to run Grammatik, and how to use the Rule
Designer and Dictionary utility on your network.


Hardware and Software Requirements
To use Grammatik on your LAN, your hardware and software must
meet the requirements below.  Some of the hardware requirements
for workstations vary depending upon how each workstation is
running Grammatik.  The section Setting Up Grammatik Users
explains the different ways you can run Grammatik on individual
workstations.

Grammatik requires that your network server have:

      CPU:        80386 or higher
      RAM:        at least 2 MB
      Hard Disk:        at least 2.5 MB free space

Grammatik requires that individual workstations have:

      CPU:        80286 or higher
      RAM:        at least two MB
      MS-DOS:     Version 3.1 or higher
      Hard Disk:
      *   Running Grammatik on a diskless workstation does not
          require free disk space
      *   Running Grammatik from the workstation drive requires
          2.5 MB free disk space
      *   Running Grammatik from the server drive requires 100 K
          free disk space

In addition to the requirements above, the workstations on your
network must be able to run Windows Version 3.0 or higher from
either the network server drive or the individual workstations'
hard drives.


Changing Your Workstations' Configuration
For Grammatik to run on your LAN, you must make a few simple
changes to the configuration of the workstation you use to
install Grammatik and to the configurations of any workstations
you set up to use Grammatik.  These changes include:

      *     Adding a statement to your PATH
      *     Adding environment variables
      *     Adding a statement to your WIN.INI file

You must make the first two changes before you can run Grammatik
on a workstation.  The third change is optional.

When you install Grammatik on your network server drive or set up
a workstation, the installation program lists the configuration
changes that need to be made and asks if you want it to make the
changes.  If the PATH and environment variables appear in a
workstation's AUTOEXEC.BAT and you want the WIN.INI file to be
modified, you should let the installation program make the
changes for you.  If the workstation's PATH and environment
variables are stored in a file other than AUTOEXEC.BAT and you
want to modify WIN.INI yourself, write down any information the
installation program wants to add and make the modifications
yourself.


Adding a Statement to Your Path
The statement you must add to a workstation's PATH tells the
workstation where the Grammatik program is located.   Grammatik
will not run properly on a workstation unless you add this
statement to the workstation's PATH.


Adding Environment Variables
The environment variables you must add tell Grammatik where to
find data files like dictionaries and preferences files.  The
number of environment variables you must add depends on how you
set up a workstation.   If you want to run Grammatik from the
workstation you used to install Grammatik on your network server
drive, you must add one environment variable, GMKW5.   This
environment variable tells Grammatik where to find the data files
that it needs to run and proofread documents.

If you set up a workstation to run Grammatik from the Grammatik
network directory, you must add two environment variables, GMKW5
and GMKWPVT.  The GMKW5 environment variable tells Grammatik
where to find the data files that it needs to run and proofread
documents.  The second environment variable, GMKWPVT, tells
Grammatik where to find private data files created for the user
of the workstation.

If you set up a workstation to run Grammatik from a user's
private Grammatik directory, you must add three environment
variables to the workstation's configuration.  Along with GMKW5
and GMKWPVT, you need to add the environment variable GMKWNET. 
GMKWNET tells Grammatik where to find information that
verifies the workstation can run a network edition of Grammatik.
The content of the environment variables depends on how you set
up individual workstations.

Grammatik will not run correctly unless you add the correct
environment variables to the configurations of the workstations
on your network.


Adding A Statement to WIN.INI File
You can start Grammatik with a set of predefined preferences by
double-clicking the icon of a Grammatik preferences file you have
created.  However, to get Windows to start Grammatik this way,
you must add a statement to the WIN.INI file that links files
with the Grammatik preferences file extension .PRF to the
Grammatik program.  The content of the statement depends on how
you have Grammatik set up on a workstation.

Users can run Grammatik without this statement in their
workstations' WIN.INI files.  But adding the statement will
probably make Grammatik more convenient to use.


Network Installation
Installing Grammatik on your network server drive is very similar
to installing Grammatik on a single computer. 

Before you begin installation, you must first:

      *     Have network administrator status.
      *     Decide where you want the master copy of Grammatik
            placed on the network server drive.


Administrator Status
Before installing Grammatik, make sure you are logged onto your
network with administrator or supervisor status.  This means that
you have permission to create directories on the network server
drive and to create and modify files in these directories.


Network Installation Path
The installation program, INSTALL, will ask you to indicate the
path, the drive and directory, where you would like to install
Grammatik.  INSTALL offers a default.  But you can specify any
path on a network server drive as long as the drive specified in
the path has at least 2.5 MB of free hard disk space.

Note:  If your network supports special access permissions, you
may want to make Grammatik's network directory read-only for
every one except the network administrator.   On systems that
don't support special access permissions, you might want to make
the Grammatik network read-only after you install Grammatik. 
While not required, these steps will help protect Grammatik files
from accidental corruption.


Installation Procedure
Once you make sure you have network administrator rights and
decide where on the network you want to install Grammatik, you
can begin the installation procedure that follows.

Note:  If you are reinstalling Grammatik on your network serves
drive, the installation program INSTALL may not ask you if you
want to modify your path, environment or WIN.INI file.

1     Log onto your network with administrator status or with
      administrator rights.

2     Start Windows and display the Program Manager.

3     Insert the Grammatik Installation Disk into your floppy
      drive (either A or B).

4     Click on File in the menu bar.  The File drop-down menu
      opens.

5     Click Run....  The Run dialog box opens.

6     Determine the name of the floppy drive in which you
      inserted the installation disk.  Then type:

            drive name:INSTALL /FNETWORK.INS

      The installation program INSTALL starts and asks you to
      type the path where you want Grammatik installed.

7     To install Grammatik in the default network path offered by
      the installation program, click OK.  To install Grammatik
      in a different network path, press b.  Then delete the
      default, type the different network path, and click OK.

      Note: If the directory in the path you typed already
      exists, the installation program asks you if you want to
      continue.   To continue, click OK.

      INSTALL copies the Grammatik files into the network path
      you chose.  When INSTALL finishes copying the Grammatik
      files, it creates a Grammatik 5 program group and places
      the Grammatik program and macro icons into the program
      group.  Then INSTALL asks if you want your AUTOEXEC.BAT
      file modified.  The modification INSTALL would make tells
      your computer where to find the Grammatik files.

8     If you want INSTALL to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, click
      Yes.   First, INSTALL copies the contents of your
      AUTOEXEC.BAT file to AUTOEXEC.OLD.  Then INSTALL modifies
      your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and lists the changes on your
      screen.  Click OK.

      If you do not want INSTALL to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT
      file, write down the changes INSTALL wants to make and
      click No.

      INSTALL asks if it can change your WIN.INI file.  The
      change INSTALL would make tells Windows where to find your
      Grammatik preferences files.

9     If you want INSTALL to change your WIN.INI file, click Yes.
      First INSTALL copies the contents of your WIN.INI file to 
      WIN.OLD.  Then INSTALL changes your WIN.INI file and lists
      the change on your screen.  Click OK.

      If you do not want INSTALL to change your WIN.INI file,
      write down the change INSTALL wants to make and click No.

      INSTALL tells you that the Grammatik installation is
      complete.  If you did not have INSTALL modify the
      workstation's PATH, environment, or WIN.INI file, click OK.
      INSTALL quits and returns you to the Program Manager
      window.

      If you modified the WIN.INI file, click Yes to restart
      Windows or click No to quit INSTALL and return to the
      Program Manager window.  You must restart Windows before
      the change to the WIN.INI file can take effect.

      If you modified the workstation's PATH and environment,
      click Yes to reboot the workstation or click No to quit
      INSTALL and return to the Program Manager window. You must
      reboot the workstation before the changes to the
      workstation's PATH and environment can take effect.

      CAUTION: If your network requires that you logout before
      rebooting your workstation, click No to quite INSTALL and
      return to the Program Manager window.   Then exit Windows,
      log out of the network, and reboot your workstation.

Grammatik is now installed on the network.  However, before users
can run Grammatik, it must be set up on their workstations.  
Before you try to run Grammatik or set up any workstations, read
the README.TXT file.  This file contains important information
about Grammatik that you should know.  You can view the
README.TXT file by double-clicking the README.TXT icon in the
Grammatik 5 program group.

After you install Grammatik on the network server drive, you must
set up each workstation that will use Grammatik.  The utility
INSTALL allows you or individual users to set up Grammatik on
their own workstations.


Setting Up Grammatik Users
When you set up a workstation to use Grammatik, INSTALL presents
several choices. INSTALL lets you:

      *     Set up a workstation to run Grammatik from the
            Grammatik server directory or from a workstation
            user's private Grammatik directory
      *     Modify the workstation's PATH statement, environment,
            and WIN.INI file

Since network conditions and the configuration of each
workstation dictate what choices are best for each workstation,
you should answer these questions before you set up each
workstation.  The next two sections explain the choices above and
their effects on Grammatik operation.


Deciding Whether to Run Grammatik
When you set up Grammatik on a workstation, INSTALL creates a
private Grammatik directory for the user of the workstation.  
The directory can be either on the workstation hard drive or on a
network server drive.  What INSTALL puts in this directory
depends on how you set up Grammatik.  You can set up Grammatik to
run on a workstation in two different ways: from the Grammatik
network directory or from a user's private Grammatik directory.

As the Network Administrator, you should decide which setup
option is best for each workstation.  When deciding, consider:

      *     The amount of activity on your network
      *     If the workstation is diskless
      *     If the workstation has limited hard disk space

If activity on your network is light, the workstation is
diskless, or the workstation has limited hard disk space, set up
the workstation to run Grammatik from the Grammatik network
directory.  When a workstation runs Grammatik in this way,
Grammatik's program and dictionary files are kept in the
Grammatik network directory.  Only the workstation user's
Grammatik preferences files and the files TOUR.DOC, GMKHIST.ORY,
and GMK.SPL are kept in the private Grammatik directory.  The
private Grammatik directory can be located either on a
workstation drive or on the network server drive.  This choice
keeps the disk space requirements for the private Grammatik
directory at about 100K.  However, since Grammatik is very
disk-intensive, performance of your entire LAN might be degraded.

If activity on your network is heavy or the workstation has a
large amount of free hard disk space, set up Grammatik to run
from the user's private Grammatik directory.  When a workstation
runs Grammatik in this way, the Grammatik program file and
dictionary files are kept in the user's private Grammatik
directory with the workstation user's preferences files and the
files TOUR.DOC, GMKHIST.ORY, and GMK.SPL.  The user's private
Grammatik directory resides on his or her workstation's hard
drive.  While running Grammatik this way will use about 2.5 MB of
disk space on the workstation, the performance of your LAN will
not be degraded.


Modifying a Workstation's Path Statement, Environment or WIN.INI
For Windows and Grammatik to be able to find all of the required
files, a workstation's PATH statement, environment, and WIN.INI
file must be changed.  Normally, the utility INSTALL makes these
changes.

On most workstations, the PATH statement and environment
information are stored in each workstation's AUTOEXEC.BAT files. 
At the same time, most workstations store the WIN.INI file in the
same directory that contains the Windows program files.   INSTALL
assumes a workstation has this type of configuration when it
attempts to modify the PATH, environment, and WIN.INI file.  If
the workstations on your network have this type of configuration,
it is best to let INSTALL automatically modify these items.

If the workstations on your network store the PATH, environment,
and WIN.INI file in a different location, you must change these
items yourself.  This could happen if your network has diskless
workstations or stores the PATH and environment information in
workstation users' login scripts or network initialization files.

If you must manually modify a workstation's PATH, environment,
and WIN.INI file, you must find where these items are stored.  
Then run INSTALL from the workstation.  When INSTALL asks if it
should modify the workstation's PATH, environment, and WIN.INI
file, write down the changes INSTALL wants to make and answer No.

When INSTALL quits, add the statements INSTALL provided in the
appropriate locations. 

It is important to remember that whether you modify a
workstation's PATH, environment, and WIN.INI file after running
INSTALL or while running INSTALL, the changes must be made for
Grammatik to operate correctly.


Setting Up a Work Station
Once you decide how you want a workstation set up, follow the
instructions below. 


1     Log onto the network.

2     Start Windows and display the Program Manager.

3     Click File in the Program Manager menu bar.  The File
      drop-down menu opens.

4     Click Run....  The Run dialog box opens.

5     Start the INSTALL by typing the complete path and pressing
      Enter.   For example, if INSTALL is on the network server
      drive L: in the directory \GMKW, you would start it by
      typing L:\GMKW\INSTALL.

      INSTALL starts and asks you if you want to keep Grammatik
      files on the network server drive or copy them to your
      private Grammatik directory.

6     If you want to run Grammatik from the Grammatik network
      directory, click the button to the left of  Keep Grammatik
      files on the server drive.  Then click OK.

      If you want to run Grammatik from your private Grammatik
      directory, click the button to the left of Copy Grammatik 
      files to your private directory.  Then click OK.

      INSTALL asks you to type the path for your private
      Grammatik directory.  

7     Type the path and name that you want for your private
      Grammatik directory and click OK.  INSTALL creates the
      private Grammatik directory, copies the appropriate files
      into the directory, creates the Grammatik program group,
      and places the Grammatik program and macro icons in the
      program group.  Then INSTALL asks if it can change your
      PATH and add environment variables to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
      file.

8     If you want INSTALL to change your PATH and add environment
      variables to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, click Yes.   First
      INSTALL copies the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
      AUTOEXEC.OLD.  Then INSTALL changes your AUTOEXEC.BAT
      file and lists the changes on your screen.  Click OK.

      If you do not want INSTALL to change your PATH and add
      environment variables to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, write down
      the information INSTALL wants to add and click No.  

      INSTALL asks if it can add a statement to your WIN.INI
      file.

9     If you want INSTALL to add the statement to your WIN.INI
      file, click Yes.  First INSTALL copies the contents of your
      WIN.INI file to WIN.OLD.  Then INSTALL adds the statement
      to your WIN.INI file.  Click OK.   If you do not want
      INSTALL to add the statement to your WIN.INI file, write
      down the statement INSTALL wants to add and click No.

      INSTALL tells you that the Grammatik is set up on the
      workstation.  If you did not have INSTALL modify the
      workstation's PATH, environment, or WIN.INI file, click OK.
      INSTALL quits and returns you to the Program Manager
      window.

      If you modified WIN.INI file, click Yes to restart Windows
      or click No to quit INSTALL and return to the Program
      Manager window.  You must restart Windows before the change
      to the WIN.INI file can take effect.

      If you modified the workstation's PATH and environment,
      click Yes to reboot the workstation or click No to quit
      INSTALL and return to the Program Manager window.  You must
      reboot the workstation before the changes to
      the workstation's PATH and environment can take effect.

      If you answered Yes to the changes Grammatik wanted to make
      to the workstation's PATH, environment, and WIN.INI file,
      your workstation is ready to run Grammatik.  However, if
      you answered No to the changes, you must change the PATH
      and environment before you can run Grammatik.  While it is
      not required, you might also want to modify the WIN.INI
      file.

Before you try to run Grammatik, read the README.TXT file.  This
file containsimportant information about Grammatik that you
should know.  You can view the README.TXT file by double-clicking
the README.TXT icon in the Grammatik 5 program group.


Using Grammatik on a Network
Using Grammatik on a network requires that you protect Grammatik
files in the Grammatik network directory against corruption. 
When installed on a network, the Grammatik program and the guided
tour are set up to protect against file corruption.  However, you
must use the Rule Designer and Dictionary utility in a way that
does not accidentally change the dictionary files in the
Grammatik network directory.  The sections that follow explain
how Grammatik and the guided tour are set up and how to use the
Rule Designer and Dictionary utility safely.

When installed on a network, Grammatik only reads information
from the files in the Grammatik network directory.  Any files
Grammatik must write to are kept in users' private Grammatik
directories.  This includes the preferences file (GMK.PRF), the
history file (GMKHIST.ORY), and the user spelling list file
(GMK.SPL).

This allows you to make the Grammatik network directory
read-only, eliminating the possibility that a user could
accidentally corrupt or delete any files.


Using the Rule Designer
The Rule Designer is used to create rules, edit rules, and delete
rules in the file GMK.DIC, which contains all of Grammatik's
rules.  Changes to GMK.DIC in the Grammatik network directory
will affect how Grammatik works for all users.  For this reason,
you should only run the Rule Designer from a private Grammatik
directory.  INSTALL does not copy the Rule Designer to private
Grammatik directories during workstation setup.  If a user wants
to run the Rule Designer, you must manually copy it from the
Grammatik network directory to the user's private Grammatik
directory.

How you use the Rule Designer depends on the needs of the users
on your network.  You have two choices.  You can:

      *     Allow everyone to use the Rule Designer to modify and
            create rules.
      *     Allow one person to use the Rule Designer to modify
            and create rules.

If you want to allow everyone to use the Rule Designer, set up
their workstations to run Grammatik from their private Grammatik
directories.  When you set up a workstation in this way, the rule
dictionary file GMK.DIC is copied to each user's private
Grammatik directory.  Then manually copy the Rule Designer to
each user's private Grammatik directory and add it to each user's
Grammatik program group.  Now each user has a personal copy of
GMK.DIC that they can change without affecting how Grammatik
operates for other users.

While this gives users great flexibility in controlling
Grammatik, it also means you will end up with different copies of
GMK.DIC on different workstations.  This may be what you want,
but it is not normally a good practice.

If you allow only one user to use the Rule Designer, you do not
face the problems that different copies of GMK.DIC on different
workstations could create.  You also have the opportunity to
create an organization-wide style guide.  Set up the workstation
of the person you appoint to use the Rule Designer to run
Grammatik from his or her private Grammatik directory.   Since
the rule dictionary file GMK.DIC is copied to a user's private
Grammatik directory when you set up his or her workstation in
this way, the user can modify the rule dictionary without
affecting how Grammatik works for other users.  Manually copy the
Rule Designer to the user's private Grammatik drive and add it to
his or her Grammatik program group.  When finished changing
GMK.DIC, the user can copy the updated version of GMK.DIC to the
Grammatik network directory.  This user will usually require
administrator privileges.

After the user updates GMK.DIC on the network, you can notify
other users of the change.  Users running Grammatik from the
Grammatik network directory will begin to use the new rules when
the updated GMK.DIC is there.  Users running Grammatik from their
private Grammatik directories will need to copy GMK.DIC from the
Grammatik network directory to their private Grammatik directory.


Using the Dictionary Utility
The Dictionary utility allows you to add and remove words from
Grammatik's MordProof dictionary (MORPROOF.DIC).  Using the
Dictionary utility on a network requires the same type of
decision that using the Rule Designer on a network requires. 

Like the Rule Designer, users should only run the Dictionary
utility if they are running Grammatik from their private
Grammatik directory.  Furthermore, INSTALL does not copy the
Dictionary utility to users' private Grammatik directories
during workstation setup.

Users have their own user spelling dictionary (GMK.SPL) in their
private Grammatik directory.  But if users want to run the
Dictionary utility to add the words in their GMK.SPL file to
Grammatik's MordProof dictionary, you must decide how you want
the MordProof dictionary updated.

How you use the Dictionary utility depends upon the needs of the
users on your network.  You have two choices.  You can:

      *     Allow everyone to use the Dictionary utility to
            update MORPROOF.DIC
      *     Allow one person to use the Dictionary utility to
            update MORPROOF.DIC

If you allow individuals to use the Dictionary utility, set up
their workstations to run Grammatik from their private Grammatik
directories.  When you set up a workstation in this way, the
MordProof dictionary file is copied to each user's private
Grammatik directory.  Then manually copy the Dictionary utility
to their private Grammatik directories and add it to their
Grammatik program groups.  Now each user has a personal copy of
the MordProof dictionary that they can change without affecting
how Grammatik works for other users.

While this gives your users great flexibility in controlling
Grammatik, it also means you will end up with different copies of
the MordProof dictionary on different workstations.  This may be
what you want, but it is not normally a good practice.

If you allow only one person to use the Dictionary utility, you
do not face the problems that different copies of the MordProof

from the person's private Grammatik directory.  Since the

Grammatik directory when you set up his or her workstation in
this way, the user can modify the rule dictionary without
affecting how Grammatik works for other users.  Manually copy the
Dictionary utility to the user's private Grammatik directory and
add it to his or her Grammatik program group.  When the person
finishes modifying the MordProof dictionary, they can copy it to
the Grammatik network server directory.  The user will usually
require administrator privileges.  

After the user updates the MordProof dictionary in the network
server directory, you can notify other users of the change. 
Users running Grammatik from the Grammatik network directory will
get the new version of the MordProof dictionary when it is copied
to the directory.   Users running Grammatik from their private
Grammatik directory will have to copy the MordProof dictionary
from the Grammatik network directory before they can use the new
dictionary.
