	     PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES REDDING PITT TO BE U.S. 
	       ATTORNEY FOR THE MIDDLE DISTRICT OF ALABAMA


     President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Redding
Pitt, a veteran of the Alabama Attorney General's office, to be U.S.
Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama.

     Redding Pitt has served in the Alabama Office of the Attorney
General since 1986 in several capacities:  as an Assistant Attorney
General (1986 - 87), Chief Deputy Attorney General (1987 - 91) and, most
recently, as Special Counsel to the Attorney General (1991 - present).
In his current position, Pitt serves as the chief legal officer of the
Office of the Attorney General.

     Previously, Pitt served the state of Alabama as Assistant Secretary
of State (the summer of 1986), as Assistant Legal Advisor to the
Director of Finance (1984 - 86), and as Counsel to the Secretary of
State (1981 - 84).

     Pitt was born in Decatur, Alabama on March 29, 1944. He earned a
B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1967 and a J.D. from Boston
College Law School in 1977. He served in the United States Army from
1969 - 72, attaining the rank of Captain. Pitt is married to Abby van
Alstyne and the couple has one son.
