This diskette contains updates for the Virtual Guitar games "Welcome To
West Feedback", "Welcome To West Feedback - The Second Set" and "Quest
For Fame Featuring Aerosmith". The game(s) to be updated must already be
installed on your system.

To install these updates, insert the diskette into a diskette drive and:

1) Select "Run" from the Program Manager "File" menu
2) Type x:\SETUP and press Enter (x = drive letter of the diskette drive)

Since this procedure only updates games that are currently installed, you
must run it again every time you install a new Virtual Guitar game or
reinstall one that is already installed. You do NOT have to run this
update again if you just change the settings of a currently installed game
(by using the "Change Configuration" option).

The following bug fixes or enhancements for all Virtual Guitar games are
installed by this update:

   - A bug has been fixed that caused wrong or scrambled colors to be
      displayed on some systems.

   - The game can now be played without a mouse. This will allow the
game to be run on a system that has a serial mouse and no available
COM ports. See the section "Running Without A Mouse" below for more
      details.

   - To improve performance on small memory systems (those with less
than 6 MB of RAM memory), some secondary videos, such as audience
reactions, will be disabled or will be played slowly.

   - A bug has been fixed that allowed multiple copies of the Virtual
Guitar game to be started. Now, if you try to run a second copy,
the first copy will be brought to the top instead.

In addition, the following bug fixes or enhancements for "Welcome To West
Feedback" are installed:

   - Scoring in the Riff Challenge scene has been changed to be more
      consistent and accurate.

   - Lloyd's judgements of your riff playing in the Bedroom scene now
more closely match what you need to do to win the actual Riff
      Challenge.

   - The Riff Challenge now requires you to play five riffs to win
      instead of four.

Also, the following bug fixes or enhancements for "Quest For Fame Featuring
Aerosmith" are installed:

   - A bug has been fixed which would cause the Rep Score display to
change unexpectedly. This bug did not affect game play at all - only
the displayed Rep Score was in error.

Running Without A Mouse
-----------------------

The Virtual Guitar is a serial (COM) device and so must be connected to
a working COM port on your system. We have found that there are many
systems that do not have an unused, functional COM port. Most of these
systems have a serial mouse connected to one COM port (usually COM1),
an internal modem connected as the other COM port (usually COM2), and no
other COM ports (or a non-functional COM port connector on the back of the
system that used to be COM2 before the internal modem was installed).

It is our belief that, for most users, the best solution is to have your
system vendor make all of your existing COM ports work or to install
another COM port on your system. In cases where this is not possible,
we now support the use of the Virtual Guitar game without a mouse, with
the Guitar connected in place of the mouse.

However, the Guitar is not a true Windows-supported pointing device,
and so it will not take the place of a real mouse and specifically will
not work in Windows applications other than the Virtual Guitar game.
In order to use Windows while the Guitar is connected in place of the mouse,
you must be familiar with the Windows keyboard commands for selecting menus
and options, starting programs, and so on (if you are not familiar with
the Windows keyboard commands, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
Depending on which version of Windows you are running, this information will
be found in the "Basic Windows Skills" or "Basic Windows Tasks" section or
the "Keyboard Shortcuts" appendix).

To use the Guitar instead of the mouse, you must shut down Windows and then
turn your system power off. Disconnect the serial mouse, and connect the
Guitar to the same COM port. Then, turn system power back on and restart
Windows. Since there is no Windows-supported mouse connected, Windows will
not display the mouse pointer when it comes up. Then, use the Windows
keyboard commands to start and run the game. Once you are finished playing
the Virtual Guitar game, exit from the game and reverse the above procedure
to reconnect the mouse to your system.

You also need to do this before installing the Virtual Guitar game so that
the installation procedure can find out where the Guitar is connected.
Since there is no mouse connected, you will need to use the Windows keyboard
commands to select options during installation.

A Few Keyboard Hints
--------------------

A "control" is an item in a window that you can click on; for example,
a push button (a gray rectangle with a word like "OK" in the middle), or
a check box (a little square in which an "X" appears when you click on it).
Normally, in Windows the mouse provides two functions; selecting which
control you want to activate (by pointing at it) and activating it (by
clicking the mouse button). When running "mouseless Windows", there are
two keys that are used for these functions, TAB and SPACE.

The TAB key is used to cycle through the controls in a window, selecting
them one at a time. Windows indicates which control is currently activated
by drawing a dashed line around it. This is the equivalent of pointing at
a control with the mouse pointer. Once the control is selected, the SPACE
bar is used to activate it.

In a Windows program, the menu bar at the top of the window may contain
one or more menus that can be opened; for example, Program Manager has
menu items called "File", "Options", "Window" and "Help". To open a
menu, you would normally use the mouse to click on the appropriate word.
When using the keyboard, this is done by holding down the ALT key and
pressing the underlined letter in the menu name. For example, to open
the "File" menu in Program Manager, hold down on ALT and then press F.
To select an item in a menu, you may either use the arrow keys to highlight
the menu item and then press ENTER, or simply press the underlined letter in
the menu item.

For example, here are the keystrokes you would use to start the Virtual
Music installation. This assumes that you in File Manager and that no
other windows are open.

1) Hold down on ALT and press F to open the File Manager "File" menu.

2) Type R to select the "Run" command.

3) A dialog box will appear so that you may fill in the name of the
program to run. The blinking text cursor will be in the "Command Line"
box. Type x:\SETUP in the box, where "x" is the letter of your CD-ROM
   drive.

4) Now, press the TAB key twice to select the "OK" button (the first TAB
press will select the "Run Minimized" check box, and the second TAB
press will select the "OK" button).

5) Press the SPACE bar to activate the "OK" button.
