$Introduction

Screen Magic's Utilities for WordPerfect are a collection of powerhouse
utilities designed to boost any WordPerfect (5.1 for DOS) user's performance.

SpeedList - is activated by hitting [F5] (List) in
WordPerfect, which normally asks you to
type a path name and hit enter. With
SpeedList installed, you still have that
option. Or you can select from a list of
directories that you've indicated are your
          most-used directories.

SpeedRetrieve - is activated by hitting
          [Shift]+[F10] (Retrieve) in WordPerfect,
which normally asks you to type a path and
document name and hit enter. With
SpeedRetrieve installed, you still have that
option, or you can select from a list of the
last 10 documents that you have created or
modified. Since most users work within the
same 10 documents most of the time,
          SpeedRetrieve is a time-saving tool.

SpeedWords - is a menu-driven index of words and
phrases that you define, activated by hitting
          [Alt-]+[`]. Once defined, words and
phrases can be hot-keyed into a document
with ease. The SpeedWords system can
hold up to 100 phrases at a time. Adding,
deleting and editing phrases is all done
from a simple and friendly menu-system.

Special Character Menu - The special character
menu is a pop-up menu, activated by
[Ctrl]+S, that will allow you to select one
of 254 characters. Most of these characters
cannot be found on a regular keyboard.
Symbols like , , and are at your
          fingertips with this utility.

     Pop-Up Calendar - This pop-up calendar is
activated by hitting [Ctrl]+C. It provides
users with a quick calendar reference in
addition to a valuable tool for counting
days. This feature was designed to allow
you the ease of letting the computer count
and provide you with the date 30, 60, 90
days (or any number of days, includingh)0*0*0*Ԍ counting backwards) from the current date
          or any given date.

$Installation

Installation of Screen Magic's Utilities for WordPerfect is a quick and easy
process, whether you are working on a network or a stand-alone machine.

For Network Users

((Before installing SMI's Utilities for WordPerfect on a network,
please read the following discussion.$

The Utilities were designed for network or
stand-alone use. Network users have the option of
installing them for use in either mode. The only
difference is that if the Utilities are installed in stand-
alone mode, the main program files will have to be
located in the primary macro directory of the user.
Consequently, there will be duplication of those files
if more than one network user uses the Utilities.

If you decide to install them in one place for
use by all users, you must have create rights to the
directory that contains the main WordPerfect
program file (WP.EXE). If you do not have create
rights to that directory, you can only install the
Utilities to your individual workstation in stand-alone
     mode.

Once the program files are installed in the
WP.EXE directory (in the case of a network), you
must run install on each workstation that you want to
have access to the Utilities. Or, if your users do not
each have custom soft-keyboards, you can simply copy
the MAGIC.WPK file (which will be found in your
     main WordPerfect directory after network
installation) into the primary macro directory of each
user that you want to have access to the Utilities. If
that sounded confusing to you, simply use the original
install disk to setup each workstation separately.

If your company or some of the users utilize a
soft-keyboard, then you will not want to use the
"MAGIC" keyboard. See the section below on
     keyboards.

Basic installation procedures

Place the disk in a drive bay and close the door.

From WordPerfect hit [Alt]+[F10] and type A:\INSTALL or
B:\INSTALL.

Answer yes to the Proceed with installation? question by
hitting Y. h)0*0*0*Ԍ Multi-User Network is self-explanatory. This option is for
network supervisors to effect a LAN installation of the Utilities.

Individual workstation on network is the option users will
use only after option "a" has been completed by a network
supervisor. This option only copies the Magic soft-keyboard into
their personal directory, or creates or modifies a custom keyboard to access
the utilities. It does not give them access to the program files--that is
the responsibility of the supervisor on the network. If you are the only one
who intends to use these utilities then you will want to select Stand-Alone
computer, even if you are on a network.

Stand-Alone computer is for users who are not on a network
or those that are on a network but wish to run the utilities in stand-alone
mode.

The rest of the installation procedure is very simple and
should take you less than two minutes to complete the installation.

Soft Keyboards are a unique function of WordPerfect. To
some users they are still foreign. However, many individuals and
companies have discovered their power and usefulness and have
more than one soft-keyboard to choose from.

To see if your computer is using a soft keyboard, simply hit
[Shift]+[F1] and K for keyboard layout. You will be given a list of all
keyboard files located in your specified keyboard/macro directory (to see
what that is, hit [Shift]+[F1] and L for location of files).

WordPerfect ships with several soft-keyboards, so even if you
haven't created any of your own, you may see some keyboards listed there. If
there is an asterisk (*) placed on the left of any one of them, this
indicates that that keyboard is selected at this time. If you are unsure
what that keyboard does, you may want to hit E for edit to see what keys have
been re-programmed.

If you are already used to a different keyboard layout, you
will not want to install the MAGIC keyboard. Instead, you should
choose Customize Keyboard rather than Use Magic Keyboard. When
you select customize, you will be shown all of your soft-keyboards and asked
which one you wish to customize. You can customize as many as you wish by
re-running the install program.

This function will add five soft-key definitions to your soft- keyboard:
[Ctrl]+C (for Calendar); [Ctrl]+S (for Special Character Menu); [Shift]+[F10]
(redefinition of Retrieve to allow for use of SpeedRetrieve); [F5]
(redefinition of List to allow for use of SpeedList); [F7] (redefinition of
Exit to allow the tracking of file activity as needed by SpeedRetrieve); and
[Alt]+[`] to activate the SpeedWords menu.

If there is already something assigned to any one of these key
definitions, it will not be deleted or replaced. The installation program
will relocate it to the bottom of the code in that definition, following
either a {QUIT} or {RETURN} macro command.h)0*0*0*Ԍ
Redefining soft-key definitions

Should you want to assign the Counting Calendar ([Ctrl]+C), Special
Character Menu ([Ctrl]+S), or the SpeedWords ([Alt]+[`]) utilities to another
key, follow these instructions:

First, ensure that the correct keyboard is selected ([Shift]+[F1], K --
if there is not already an asterisk (*) next to it, line down to the correct
one and place an asterisk there). Then hit E to Edit. Hit C to create a new
definition. You will be prompted Key:. Simply hit the key combination that
you want to assign the utility to (i.e., [Alt]+C, [Shift]+[F12], etc.). Type
the name of the utility when asked for a definition and hit enter. Next,
delete whatever is in the box so the box is empty. Hit [Ctrl]+[V] and the
key combination that the utility is currently assigned to. This will bring
the entire program into the new key definition, exactly the way it was in the
old one.

Then you can go back and delete the old one, or delete the codes that
the install program added in, allowing your old definition to work again.

h0*0*0*
&SpeedList

SpeedList is activated by hitting [F5] (List). Normally, at this point
WordPerfect prompts you in the lower, left-hand portion of your screen to
type a path name and hit enter, as follows:

     Dir C:\WP51\DOCS\*.*

With SpeedList installed, you receive a menu centered in the middle of the
screen instead.

To cancel List Files, simply hit [F1], just as you normally would. If
you hit [ENTER], the program will list the contents of your
default directory, listed in the box. You can type the name
of a new directory before you hit [ENTER]. This would list
the contents of the directory you typed.

Turn off this menu by hitting [F9]. By hitting [F9], you will tell the
program that you wish to return to the old style of listing
files in WordPerfect. However, [F9] only turns the menu off
for the current WordPerfect session. To turn the menu off
permanently, see Turn Initial Menu On/Off on page 8.

List the last directory accessed simply by hitting [F5] at this menu.
That is, by hitting [F5], [F5], you will see the last list you
accessed. The exception to this rule is if the last list you
accessed was on a floppy disk, WordPerfect will look to your
default directory instead of the floppy.

Access the SpeedList Menu by hitting [F6] directly after hitting
[F5]. (This function works even when you've turned the
     initial menu off.)

You can store up to 17 specified directories under the SpeedList
menu. From the menu, you have many options. Let's explore each
of them.

To select a specific directory, first line down to the directory that
you want, then hit either [ENTER], 1 or S to select it. The
program will then give you a list of the files in that directory.

Editing an entry can be done by simply lining down to the entry
and hitting 3 or E for edit. For guidance on filling in the
blanks, see To create (or add) on the next page.

Deleting an entry can be done by simply lining down to the entry
and hitting 4 or D or the [Del], [Delete], or [Backspace]
key on your keyboard. Of course, this does not delete the
directory or its contents; it only deletes the description from
     the SpeedList menu.

To create (or add) another directory to this list, simply hit the [Ins]h)0*0*0*Ԍ (Insert) key, 2 or C. You will be prompted with the
     menu.

The Name for Menu: section is where you'll tell SpeedList
what you want the menu to show. For instance, you might want to say Culver
Trust Documents. Then, under the Path/File Name: you would type the name of
the directory to list. For example, C:\FORMS\EP\CULVER\.

You can also use wildcards that allow WordPerfect to help
you sort the directory contents and list only those files that meet the
specifications that you provide. For instance, if you typed:
C:\FORMS\EP\CULVER\*.TXT, the list will only contain files from the
C:\FORMS\EP\CULVER directory where the extension of the file is equal to
"TXT". Hence, if you said H:\CLIENTS\1*.*, the list would only contain files
and subdirectories that start with the number "1" (i.e., 1134, 1WILL.DOC,
etc.).

You can also use the question mark (?) to specify a single- position
wildcard. Don't shy away now. It's not as difficult as it sounds. It's
actually very easy and may be useful to you. Here's an example: by
specifying H:\CLIENTS\1?.*, you have requested WordPerfect to list all files
and directories under the H:\CLIENTS\ directory that start with "1" and
contain only one other character to the left of the period (.), and can
contain anything (or nothing) to the right. So, files like "10.txt",
"11.doc", and "1G.PSI" would be listed but files like "100.txt", "1WILL.DOC"
and "X1.TXT" would not. Also, subdirectories would be listed in the same
manner, so by specifying H:\CLIENTS\1?.*, you would see subdirectories "10"
through "19" but not "100", "1000", "12345", etc.

If you have a "Clients" directory that contains 1000 subdirectories,
each one corresponding to a client. It might be helpful to list them 100 at
a time by specifying "...\CLIENTS\1??.*", "...\CLIENTS\2??.*",
"...\CLIENTS\3??.*", and so on. Then in the menu description, put something
like "Client Directories 100-199", "Client Directories 200-299", etc.

Saving your new description is as easy as pressing [F7] to exit. You
will be returned to the SpeedList menu.

Your Default Directory can be changed by entering setup and
selecting 2 or D from the setup menu. The default directory
here need not match your default directory in WordPerfect
(listed in setup under Location of Files (to see, from a
document screen hit [Shift]+[F1] and 6 or L for location of
files. Number 7 (documents) is what WordPerfect knows as
your default directory.) This is the directory that you should
     enter here.

Turn initial menu off/on permanently by selecting setup and
selecting 1 or S. This will record the information in your
SL-PSET file (SpeedList Personal Set File) for future
WordPerfect sessions. Unlike hitting [F9] from the initial
menu which only temporarily turns the menu off, this
function turns the menu on or off until you specify otherwise.
h)0*0*0*ԌExit the SpeedList menu by hitting [F7], or 6 or E for exit. You
can also cancel out of it by hitting [F1].

I invite you to take some time now and set up your own
SpeedList directory menu. Follow the steps under To Create (or
Add) to add several directories that you use a lot.	0*0*0*

                                               SpeedRetrieve

SpeedRetrieve is activated by holding down [Shift] and hitting
[F10] (Retrieve). Normally, at this point WordPerfect prompts you
in the lower, left-hand portion of your screen to type the full path
and document name of the document you want to retrieve as
follows:

     Document to be Retrieved: _

With SpeedRetrieve installed, you receive a menu in the center of your
screen with several options.

To cancel Retrieve, simply hit [F1], just as you normally would. If
you hit [ENTER], the last item in your copy/move buffer will
be brought to the screen (just as normal).

Turn off this menu by hitting [F9]. By hitting [F9] you will tell the
program that you wish to return to the old style of retrieving
documents in WordPerfect. However, [F9] only turns the
menu off for the current WordPerfect session. To turn the
menu off permanently, use Setup once in the SpeedRetrieve
menu. Changes made to the program setup will be recorded
in the personal set file for future WordPerfect sessions.

Access the SpeedRetrieve Menu by hitting [F6] directly after hitting
[Shift]+[F10]. (This function works even when you've
     turned the initial menu off.)

To select a document to retrieve, first line down to the document
that you want, then hit either [ENTER], 1 or S to select it.
The program will then retrieve that document.

Setup will allow you to customize SpeedRetrieve for your particular
needs. Simply hit 2 or T for setup and you will receive the
     following menu:

x!SpeedRetrieve Setup

1 Automatically update list upon exiting WP? Yes
2 Status of Initial SpeedRetrieve Menu: Off
3 Use Long Document Naming Configuration? Yes

Permanent changes to the SpeedRetrieve list are not
automatically made unless you keep option 1 set to Yes. If you
change it to No, it will only update when you manually tell it to, as
explained below under Update Now.

Turn initial SpeedRetrieve menu off or on permanently by hittingh)
0*0*0*Ԍ 2 or S from the SpeedRetrieve Setup Menu. Unlike hitting
[F9] from the initial menu which only temporarily turns the
menu off, this function turns the menu on or off until you
     specify otherwise.

Using Long Document Naming configuration is permissible with
SpeedRetrieve, but it must be noted here. Otherwise you
will experience peculiar problems when trying to use [F7] to
save a document or exit WordPerfect. The reason is simple.
SpeedRetrieve uses a reprogrammed [F7] key through a soft-
keyboard file to track all document activity--that's the secret
to knowing what the last ten documents were. But in order
to do that, we've had to make your [F7] key respond as it
normally does, in addition to recording the names and paths
of the document currently on the screen. When saving using
long document naming configuration, different keystrokes are
required, hence the program needs to know which routine to
     follow.

Update Now is a feature that allows you to record the names of the
last ten documents you've had on your screen in your
SR-PSET file (SpeedRetrieve Personal Set File) for future
WordPerfect session. Automatic updates can be performed
each time you exit WordPerfect by selecting setup from the
SpeedRetrieve Menu and changing option 1 (Automatically
update list upon exiting WP?) to Yes.

Exit the SpeedRetrieve menu by hitting [F7]. You can also cancel
out of it by hitting [F1].

%SpeedWords

SpeedWords is activated by holding down [Alt] and hitting the ~
(or `) key. That's the key to the left of the number 1 on the
alphabet portion of the keyboard (not the number pad). The
reasons we picked this key are two-fold. (1) This key is usually not
a programmed key for the majority of users, and (2), it is located
next to the numbers, which, you will see, are the key to the
SpeedWords system. However, as with any other macro, you can
reassign it to almost any keystroke or combination of keystrokes
that you desire (see Redefining soft-key definitions on page 4.

SpeedWords is a handy, time-saving system that allows users
to temporarily or permanently program variable numbers 1-9 and 0
to equal a word, combination of words, or small phrase consisting
of 128 characters or less (that's about two full lines of text). Words
and phrases can then be brought back quickly by holding down the
[Alt] key and hitting the number corresponding to the text, or by
accessing them directly through the menu, should you forget the
number.

Each SpeedWords file can hold up to ten phrases each and
you can have up to 10 SpeedWords files. Users find it handy toh)0*0*0*Ԍhave a different SpeedWords file for each type of work. For
instance you may have a different file for estate planning than for
correspondence.

Your initial SpeedWords File is named SW-Basic. This file is
automatically loaded each time you start a new WordPerfect session,
so you will want to put your most commonly used words and
phrases in there. You will find that adding words and phrases is
simple and quick.

You will decide the names for the up to 9 other SpeedWords
files, for a total of 10 SpeedWords files.

Bring your menu up now by hitting [ALT]~

Selecting a phrase is as easy as lining down to the text you want
and hitting enter. Or, you can simply hit the number next to
the text once in the SpeedWords Menu. Or, once you
remember what text is assigned to which number, you can
hold down the [Alt] key and hit that number, without ever
     accessing the menu.

Adding entries is easy. You can either use the edit entries function
or add them directly from text on the screen. This is the
fastest and easiest way. Simply block the text you want to
add and activate the menu system by hitting [Alt]+[`]. You
will be prompted to provide which number you want it stored
under. Select an empty number or any number that you
     want to reassign.

Delete an entry by lining down to that line and hitting D. It will
only be temporarily removed unless you also save changes to
that SpeedWords file before exiting WordPerfect.

Edit all of the entries by hitting E from this menu. All of the
entries will be placed on the screen in front of you for you
to edit. Simply follow the instructions and hit [F7] to save
the changes or exit the editing mode. The new entries will
be automatically saved to your SpeedWords file.

Save changes to your SpeedWords file any time you want by
selecting S from this menu. Your changes will then be made
permanent in that SpeedWords file. If you do not save your
changes, the newly assigned Alt-Number(s) will only be
effective during the current WordPerfect session or until
     another SpeedWords file is loaded.

List Files - to list the other SpeedWords files you've created, simply
hit L from the SpeedWords menu. From there you will
receive the menu listing all your SpeedWord files.

To load a new file, simply hit the number next to it or line down to
the file you want and hit L or [ENTER].
h)0*0*0*ԌCreate a new file by hitting N. You will be asked to give the new
file a name, 8 characters or less. You must follow normal file
naming conventions. For instance CORP+DOC, CORP=DOC,
and CORP?DOC are not valid filenames and will result in errors.
You cannot give the file name an extension. For instance
CORPORAT.FIL will not be accepted. The SpeedWords program
gives the file a "WPM" extension, making it a macro. Therefor, you
should not give it the same name as a macro that you currently have
access to. To see if you have access to a macro, simply hit
[Ctrl]+[F10] (Macro Define), type the name you want to check and
hit [ENTER]. If the screen says that it already exists, then it does,
and you have access to it. If you want to see what it does, hit 3 or
D for description or 2 or E for edit. If the only thing that appears
in the macro editor box is "{DISPLAY OFF}", then whoever tried
to create this macro aborted before giving it any commands and it
can be deleted.

After giving the new file a name, you will receive a screen
with instructions on filling in your 10 definitions. Follow the
directions and hit [F7] when complete.

Copy File - Rather than creating a new file, you can copy any one
of your already existing list files by lining down to it and
     hitting C.

Delete a File - by lining down to it and hitting D. This only removes%
it from the list. If you want it removed from your macro directory,
you will need to go in an manually delete it.

"Counting Calendar

The Counting Calendar is a pop-up calendar which provides users with a
quick date reference. It is activated by hitting [Ctrl]+C. Its finer
attribute is the ability to count for you. No more counting on your fingers,
making tick-marks on your calendar (or, for those of us who have trouble with
what comes after 10, removing our shoes).

The calendar always starts with the current month and year. To advance
or retreat from the current month simply hit the up or down arrow keys, or
the [PgUp] or [PgDn] keys. To advance or retreat from the current year, hit
[Ctrl]+[PgUp] or [Ctrl]+[PgDn]. As you can see, coaching is provided at the
bottom of the calendar itself.

Count days by hitting [F6]. The program will ask you:

  Start from today? Yes (No)

Simply hit Y or N. If you choose No, the program will ask you for the day
that you want to start counting from. The next option is:

Provide 30-60-90 day spread? Yes (No)

By responding Yes, the program will give you a spread of 30, 60 and 90 days
from the date that you told it to start counting. By responding No, you
will be asked to input the number of days that you want to count.

The results will be displayed on the screen when calculations
are finished. If you want the results brought into your document at the
position of your cursor, simply hit the space bar.

Count Backwards

Here's the secret to counting backwards. Instead of saying "45", if you
want to count backwards (or minus) "45" days, simply type "-45".

Special Character Menu

The special character menu pops up when you hit [Ctrl]+S. It allows you to
cursor up, down, right and left in the menu. Simply hit [ENTER] when your
cursor is on the character that you want to put in your document. The next
time you activate the menu during the same WordPerfect session, the cursor
will be resting where you left it.

There is another way that you can access this ASCII character set. All 254
characters are available in WordPerfect by holding down the [Alt] key and
typing the number on the number pad, then letting the [Alt] key up. Weird
sensation right? You normally do not hold down a key while pressing several
others, then let the key up. But that's the way that you have to do it. You
can learn what number is assigned to the symbol by pressing [F3] (help) while
your cursor is on that key. Try it.
