You are set back in time to ancient times in the Orient. The time
of the SHOGUN. This game diverges a bit, well...a lot, from how it
really was back then. I made these changes in hopes of making the game
more interesting. Enough realism is included to give the illusion
of being FACT. This game is not that complicated even though it may seem
that way at first.....don't be discouraged!

*** GOAL: TO BECOME THE SHOGUN AND RULE ALL THE COUNTRIES! ***

BREAK DOWN OF RANKS RELATIVE TO LEADERSHIP:

SHOGUN : Rules the ENTIRE land which includes 10 countries
    DAIMYO : Rules 1 country
HATAMOTO : A respected clan leader who maintains a big army and lots of land
SAMURAI : Leader of a small clan of serfs and a small army

Starting Out
------------
Everyone starts out as a Samurai who leads a small group of warriors.
You are the leader of a small Clan with few serfs who are devoted to you.
You are given 100 bushels of rice. THE FIRST THING to do is decide were
you want to build your Home Fief (similar to castle). You will be starting
in an arbitrary country inside of the Daimyo Fief. To build your Home,
travel through countries and pick a spot and select command <B>. (?=See help)

Watch Out For
-------------
BARBARIANS! They roam randomly throughout the land but occur MOST often
in Country #5. They can wipe you out Quickly. Be cautious and use
the 'Send Recon' command when travelling through Country #5.
Almost every aspect of the game will reflect on your 3 main Attributes:
             1. Swordsmanship
             2. Generalship
             3. HONOR <----------Most Important of ALL.
If your honor is low, you will notice that it effects everything you do.
The attributes are set on a scale of 1 to 10. All start out at 1 except
for Honor which is 3 (barely adequate Honor).
This atttributes can be moved up in a number of ways. This strategy will
    be discussed later on.

GAME PLAY
---------
If the sysop has registered the game, game play is limited only by the
amount of time the sysop has issued that particular player on the BBS.
UNREGISTERED version will be restriced from the NINJA options and
a maximum of 10 players will be forced on the game.
From almost any menu, EVEN THOUGH THE OPTION IS NOT DISPLAYED, you can
select '*' as your selection and kick the game into X-pert mode and
return to novice mode in the same way.

MOVING UP
---------
You start out as a Samuari and then move forward through the ranks
    in the following order:
         1. Samurai
         2. Hatamoto
         3. Daimyo
         4. SHOGUN

To reach the level of Hatamoto a player needs 1000 warriors and 300
acreas of land, AND maintain an Honor value of 4.
During Nightly Maintainance, the computer will check stats
for qualifying players and you'll be notified the next day when you
loggon. <if you had enough to be promoted and didn't get it, someone
could have attacked you before maintaince>
After you reach Hatamoto, you need only travel to a Daimyo Fief and
Attempt to ASSUME the position in which the computer will put you up
against the Daimyo in a Duel to see if you are good enough.
After controlling 4 countries you can attempt to DEFEAT the SHOGUN!

MISSIONS
--------
The SHOGUN will issue challanges out randomly and have the information
concerning the mission in the news....such as Location and type of
opponent you would be facing. The range of opponents is very wide.
You could fight anything from a common thief to a GOLD DRAGON. The
computer will take your stats and give you a HITPOINT value and put
you into to hand-to-hand combat mode of which the options displayed
are straight-forward and to the point. Fighting bigger opponents will
of course bring BIGGER rewards...such has increased abilities, money,
    more warriors, etc......
Before each mission, you will be asked to select a sword. This is
important because it effects how you want to fight. If you select the
'A.' sword you'll have lower attack value but a HIGHER reward value.
As you go up the the list to 'D.' the attack value goes up whereas the
reward value goes down. It's just a give and take thing!!
GOOD LUCK! It's one of the more exciting things in the game. If you
come across something you just can't defeat.....leave it! If no one
conquers it by the end of the day, the computer will replace it the
following day. Also, upon completion of each mission, the SHOGUN will
    immediately issue another.

STARTING A FAMILY
-----------------
It is important to find a wife ASAP and get married. If your married,
the computer will check nightly to see if you have produced any children.
You can only have a MAXIMUM number of 2 children at any time in the game.
<<forget the 9 month wait>> If so, it can be either a son or daughter.
If you have a daughter, you can set a dowry (THAT PLAYER's WILL PAY) so
that other players can be married also. If you have a son he will become
your Heir in case of your death. Yes, this means you can ALMOST BE
IMMORTAL! Be careful, other player's can kidnap your children and in the
event you die while your heir is kidnapped and you'll LOSE everything.
If an heir does take over, your new alias will be the name of the child
that you choose for it. Also his attributes will all be reset EXCEPT
honor (it is passed on). Oh yeah, and of course your old wife and children
    will all disappear too.

ADDING TO YOUR FIEF ***<< OPTION IS UNDERGOING CHANGES >>***
-------------------
Your Fief is your castle-like place of residence. The higher the
value, the bigger the castle. The bigger the castle the better
Defense value is. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT when People start
    attacking your it!!

TAX RATE
--------
Although with smaller clans the tax rate doesn't mean much, it does
when you start building up people. Your TAX rate CAN effect everything
you do. It's a FAST way to make money, but if you keep it up too long,
your serfs and warriors will start to notice and you could possible start
a rebellion that you yourself could be killed in.

DUELING PLAYERS
---------------
You are allowed a certain number (3-10) duels a day. A stage with
both players will be displayed and a power will be calculated from
attributes of each player. The computer will handle the Duel based
on your attributes. The winner will recieve any number of things
from the loser. Can be a good option, but is you have low Attributes,
it is unwise to duel everyone you run into. You can even lose members
of your family if you have nothing to give the winner.

ATTACKING FIEFS
---------------
<F> ight to Death = ONLY ONE PERSON WILL WALK AWAY ALIVE!
Excellent way to build up Generalship!!
<R> aid for Treasure = The more men you send the higher your
chance for success and amount of <$> retrieved
<A> ttack Serfs = Wipe out a players serfs
<D> estroy Fief = Lowers Enemy Fief values
<K> ill Family = Kills Wife or Children
<B> attle Warriors = Pit your army against another. Wear down an army!
<E> xecute = Attempt to assassinate a player

TREACHERY
---------
<I> ncite Rebellion = Start a rebellion in player's fief
<R> escue Hostage = Rescue a family member from an enemy player
<S> py on Family = Learn VITAL information about a player
<L> oot Treasury = Steal money from player's money vault
<T> ake a Hostage = Take another player's family member hostage
<P> lant Evidence = Attempt to plant incriminating evidence on a player
<C> ause Rice Spoilage = Spoil player's rice and cause serf starvation

Options in SHOGUN Fief
----------------------
Recruit Samurai - Once a day you can choose this option and it will
randomly recruit samurai to your fief which aid in
defensive and offensive actions with other players.
The more warriors you control, the more Samurai you
                       will attract.

Look for Wife - During nightly maintaince a woman MAY OR MAY NOT become
available for marriage. Selecting this option will
reveal the answer. Also, it will be advertised in
the News when one is available. Of course, you'll have
to pay the dowry arbitrarily by the computer.

NINJA MENU - (* NOT AVAILABLE IN UNREGISTERED VERSIONS *)
                  For more information, see below.

Hire Warriors - Allows you to add more warriors to your army for a
                      Fixed price.

Options in DAIMYO Fief
----------------------
Donate Land - Donating land to the temples is the easiest way to gain
honor. Every 1000 acreas of land donated will increase
                    your honor by 1.

Buy/Sell Menu - Allows you to buy Rice and Land at arbitrary prices
set by the computer during nightly maintainance.

Increase Weapons Level - The higher you increase this value the better
your warriors and samurai can fight and defend your fief.
This helps you in Duels, Attempting Missions and
in all battles that include you or your warriors.

Options while VISITING player fiefs
-----------------------------------
Goto Trade Menu - Allows you to Buy and Sell Rice & Warriors at prices
and amounts set by the owner of the Fief.

Duel Visiting Players - Allows you to Duel ALL players (INCLUDING OWNER)
in a duel that is run by the computer. The stakes
can be anything from Money to your Children.

Marry Owner's Daughter - If owner has a daughter he may or may not make
her available for Marriage. If so you will be shown
the dowry he is asking and if it meets with your approval
she's all yours....however, she will have to bear the
name, the owner assigned her at birth.

    Attempt Treachery - SEE ABOVE

Options in HOME Fief
--------------------
Prevent Entry - This will allow you to shut the gates and keep other
players out of your fief. Can be a good idea sometimes,
                    but not ALWAYS recommended.

  * Edit Trade Market - IMPORTANT! There are 3 values to be set for both
Rice & Warriors on this menu.
                     1. Amount to Sell - how many you want to take out of stock
or from your army and sell. Used for
surplus or if in need of money.
                     2. Price to Sell At - price your willing to sell the above
                                         amount at.
                     3. Price to Buy At - If you want to buy something, set a
price and players can come along and
sell as much as they want. REMEMBER,
a player could theoretically sell you
INFINITE numbers of either value so
                                         watch it closely.
Build on To Fief - DISCUSSED ABOVE

Ostracize Player - If someone is in your fief that you don't want there,
this option will throw them out.

! ATTACK FIEFS ! - options are discussed ABOVE
Something to remember--when a fief is under attack,
and the owner is home, the defense value is GREATLY
increased. This is not to say, sit at home and defend
your Fief, but it doesn't hurt to be at home if your
not going to be playing a couple days.

Send Reconassiance - Given any coordinates, it will tell you what is there.

Marry Off Daughter - This will allow you, if you have a daughter, to set
a dowry and allow your daughter to marry other players.

Free & Kill Hostage - If you have a hostage you can choose either option

THAT'S IT! I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY THE GAME. I'M STILL WORKING ON A FEW ADDITIONS
TO THIS VERSION WITH THE "BUILD FIEF" BUT OTHER THAN THAT, THE GAME WILL GO
AS IS. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND GOOD LUCK! IF SOMETHING YOU FEEL SHOULD
BE IN INSTRUCTIONS BUT WAS ACCIDENTALLY LEFT OUT, LET ME KNOW.
