Please read this entire document before installing the SCORE Preview
   system on your computer.

SCORePREView is a DOS program designed for screen viewing, playing
through a standard MIDI system and PostScript printing of pages of
music prepared by the SCORE music publishing system.

This program may be copied and used by anyone, with the stipulation
that any commercial or for-profit use must be specifically licensed
   by San Andreas Press.

Any file saved in the standard SCORE format may be read by this program.
SCORPREV does not allow for any changes to be made to the files read
in. Once a file (a page of music) has been read in, SCORPREV allows
for writing a new copy of the page in either of two formats. The normal
save command (SA) writes a file which can be read by any other copy of
SCORPREV, but this file can NOT be read by the main SCORE program. In
this way music may be distributed without the possibility of unauthorized
alterations being made. The default name extension (recommended) for
files saved by SCORPREV is .SCO, however any other extension may be used.
If the file is saved with the the extension .VUE, the music may be viewed
on the screen and played through a MIDI system, but it cannot be printed.
This format should be used by musicians or publishers who wish their music
to be available for browsing but desire to control the distribution of
any hard copy of their work. You will need the complete SCORE program to
create data for use with SCORPREV.

SCORPREV will only print to laser printers with the PostScript graphics
feature. (Or a PostScript .EPS file may be written to the disk.) SCORPREV
supports only the the standard 640x480 VGA graphics display. To ensure
the greatest possible speed for image zooms, etc., a simplified display
font is used. The actual printing employs PostScript procedures which
produce copy that can achieve the highest standards of the engraver's art.

A separate program is available that will print SCORE files on dot matrix
printers (IBM Proprinter or EPSON format). In this case the PostScript
text fonts are replaced by thin-line characters. (Some InkJet printers
can print in the EPSON mode. Consult your printer manual.) To obtain this
   program send $30.(US) to:
				San Andreas Press
				SCOREDOT Program
				P.O. Box 60247
				Palo Alto, CA 94306

For Canada and Mexico add $5., for other international add $20.

If the full SCORE (ver. 3.11) program is bought later, $30. will
be credited toward the purchase price.

*********************** Postscript Printing ***************************

A complete printing command menu allows easy control of many parameters.
There are SAVE and READ commands to retain frequently used printing options.

The printing process may be interrupted at any time by hitting the <esc>
key. With other keys you may continue the printing or stop the process.

On some laser printers (Linotronics) it may be possible to determine the
orientation of the page image on the paper roll. In general this will
apply only to pages of size 9 x 12 or smaller. The two page size numbers
   (e.g. 9 12 ) may be followed by either a "0" or "1". A "1" (the default
state) causes the page to print in "portrait" mode. That is, the long side
of the SCORE page will be the vertical dimension and the short side will
be the horizontal dimension on the printer's paper. A "0" will cause the
page to print in "landscape" mode. In this case the long side of the
SCORE's page will be horizontal on the printer's paper. Do not confuse
this with SCORE's ability to rotate its output.

It is best to make extensive tests of unusual printing formats before
trying to print any large number of pages.

************************ Installing SCORPREV ***************************

If you are downloading the program from a network source, five files
must be transferred to your computer: README (this file), SETUP-A.BAT,
  SETUP-B.BAT, SCORE1.EXE and SCORE2.EXE.

You MUST insert an empty formatted floppy disk in drive A: or drive B:
before beginning the installation process. When this has been done, type
either SETUP-A or SETUP-B, depending on the floppy drive being used.
From this point on, just follow the installation instructions.

Since you now have a backup copy of all the necessary files, you may
want to delete the two big files, SCORE1.EXE and SCORE2.EXE, which were
originally downloaded from the network. If you wish to re-install SCORPREV,
mount the proper floppy disk and type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL).

The following directories will now be found:

	\SCORE ----|
		   |--- \SCORE\LIB
		   |
		   |--- \SCORE\HLP

The PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file should now include reference
to this \SCORE directory. You must reboot the computer for the new PATH
   statement to take effect.

All the documentation for SCORPREV is found in the on-line help files in
the \SCORE\HLP directory. These are ordinary text files. It may be useful
to print these as hard copy for reference purposes. The full SCORPREV
system will occupy about 797k bytes of hard disk space. (The sample music
files will need an additional 172k.)

For easy startup, a batch file, SP.BAT, is provided in the \SCORE directory.
SCORPREV may be started by typing: SP [name.ext]
The name can refer to any file in the SCORE format.

*************** Saving Files in the Preview/Print Format. *******************

SCORPREV allows you to save data to a disk file in one of two
      special formats. The main SCORE program can NOT read these formats;
thus such files can NOT be subjected to further editing. Any name
extension (except .VUE) may be used, however, the .SCO extension
is recommended. The saved files can be read back in by SCORPREV for
      viewing, playing and printing.

If the file is saved with the .VUE extension, the printing feature
will be disabled for that page.

It is required that you use the directory name \SCORE for the SCORPREV
program group. However, the program may be installed on any hard disk
drive, depending on the configuration of your computer.

*********************** Archiving SCORE Files ***************************

If you will be storing SCORE files on some archive site for network transfer
it will greatly reduce transfer time and storage space if the files are
compressed. One program that is often used for this is PKZIP(tm) (available
on many computer bulletin boards). Since you cannot expect other users to
have this same program you must make SURE that you use the self-executing
feature of PKZIP (ZIP2EXE). Several pages of music may be condensed into
one manageable package in this manner.

If your SCORE files require custom library (.DRW) files make sure they
are included. Likewise for any .EPS files which may be required by SCORE's
CODE 15 feature.

If you require PostScript type fonts beyond the basic 35, you must include
the SCORE font metrics data which must be placed in the \SCORE\LIB directory.
For this purpose you should include the FMxx.PSC files, which are produced by
SCORE's FONTCONV program, but it is illegal to transfer the PostScript font
files themselves. Each user must purchase his own copies of the actual fonts.

*********************** Memory Concerns ***************************

You should check the memory available on your computer for running programs
by typing MEM to the DOS prompt. (Type instead CHKDSK if you are using an
 older DOS system.)

SCORPREV requires about 540,000 bytes of free memory to run correctly.
If you are short of memory, study your DOS 5 or 6 manual for ways to
increase the available memory space. (The DOS 6 program MEMMAKER is useful
in this regard.) Also SCORPREV's speed may be improved by using the
SMARTDRIVE feature found in DOS 5 and 6.

*********************** Mouse Usage ***************************

SCORPREV will work best with a LOGITECH 3-button mouse system. Some other
mouse systems may work also. If you have a 2-button mouse, the function
of the a middle button may be achieved by holding down the <Ctrl> key while
 hitting the left mouse button.

SCORE is the creation of Leland Smith, lifetime professional musician and
Professor Emeritus of Music at Stanford University. It is the original fully
computerized music printing system. The first printings from SCORE appeared
in 1971. The program has been running on the PC platforms since 1986. SCORE
is now being used by most of the world's leading music publishers.
