 1. Introduction and Acknowledgments

With the ever increasing popularity of the RAR archiver, this "FAQ" has
been introduced to help new users of RAR to configure their favorite
applications and utilities to enable RAR support.

Where possible, screen captures of the actual configuration screens are
 used.

In providing these "help screens", copyright and/or ownership of the
original programs by their authors and/or publishers is acknowledged,
and you should consult the documentation of those programs for more
 specific help.

In particular, the programs mentioned in this document are generally
released under the shareware or freeware concept, and you should refer
to their individual licensing documents for information on any usage
 restrictions or requirements.

The members of the RAR Support Team would like to convey their grateful
appreciation to all authors of software that supports the RAR archiver.

Whilst every effort has been taken to test the configurations shown
in this document, no warranty as to their accuracy is made or implied,
and, as always, you should READ THE DOCUMENTATION of the individual
 software package concerned.

 2. Specific Configurations

NB: a) For all configurations, if the "always make solid" option in RAR
is enabled, the '-s' switch may be omitted from the packer
         configuration.

      b) It is generally suggested that the -m3 (standard compression)
option is used by default in most circumstances. Maximum
compression ( -m5 ) may be preferred, although this will cause
RAR to run a little slower when compressing.

GEcho SETUP 1.11+ - Registered version

NB: The configuration line for GEcho allows a maximum of 18 characters
for instertion of the command line options. It is assumed, therefore,
the the "make solid" option ( -s ), has been included as a default in
 your standard RAR configuration.

            14. I have added the ability to define other archive
programs. You need to enter the extension and the
archive signature. The extension is necessary to make
archives of that format, and the signature is necessary
to recognize archives of that format. Below is a sample
configuration for the new compression program RAR:

                    Program file RAR
                     Switches a -std -y -r -s -ep1
                     Banner

                    Program file RAR
                     Switches x -std -y

                    Signature 52 61 72 21
                    Extention RAR

The signature is encoded using hexadecimal values.
Spaces can also be entered as wildcards. This means
ALLFIX will skip that particular byte. The signatures
for other archivers can usually be found in the
documentation or in the technical specifications. I
determined the signature for RAR by inspecting a few
                    archives.

 4. Where to get further help

An international support conference exists for RAR, and is available on
a growing number of FidoNet bulletin board systems around the world.
The conference is also gated into the MercuryNet, VirtualNet and DiscNet
 networks.

RAR Support and Registration sites are located strategically around the
world, to offer local support and, in many cases, local FidoNet support
 conferences in their "native" language.

Many of the programs in this document have support conferences of their
 own within FidoNet.

 5. "The RAR Family"

The RAR archiver has a growing number of support files of it's own.

The following files are available from many BBS's worldwide, and from
all RAR Support and Registration sites:-

RAR ........ version 1.53 of "the World's Greatest Archiver"
unRAR ...... The FREEware un-archiving companion to RAR (DOS version)
 unRAROS2 ... The FREEware RAR un-archiver, ported for OS/2
unRARAMY ... The FREEware RAR un-archiver, ported for Amiga
unRARNT .... The FREEware RAR un-archiver, ported for Windows NT
unRARST .... The FREEware RAR un-archiver, ported for ST users
unRARLNX ... The FREEware RAR un-archiver, ported for LINUX users

The source code for unRAR, to allow porting to other platforms is also
freely available, and is included in the unRAR for DOS package.
