DATASTORM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN #6 Rev. 1.0

Downloading and Installing Updates and Patches

SUMMARY
You have PROCOMM PLUS, PROCOMM PLUS Network Version, or PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows, but do you have the latest? Maintenance updates and field patches
add no new features to the programs, but they solve as many known problems in
the programs as possible. DATASTORM provides these modules for all programs
in the form of downloadable files. Here's how to determine if you need them,
how to find, download and extract them, and how to properly update your
program with them.

SYMPTOMS
You may have a problem with your program and Technical Support has advised you
to update the program or install one or more available patches to solve the
problem. Or you may have no problems, but you have heard an update module is
available, and you want to bring your program up to the current version.

SOLUTIONS

Introduction
What are updates and patches, and how do they differ? Both maintenance
updates and field patches change one or more of your program's executable
files. A "maintenance update" is a set of changes to your program, correcting
all known and fixable problems at the time of the update's issue. Installing
an update increments the program's version number, making it as "up to date"
as possible. Patches, on the other hand, are specific, individual changes,
each one changing a single function in the program. Often patches change
program default (startup) settings instead of "fixing" anything, and often
they will be appropriate for some users and not appropriate for others.
Patches are installed individually, using an external patch install program.

Requirements
To install a patch or update, you must have a properly installed set of
program files on your hard drive, and you must obtain the proper update or
patch file. In the case of patches, you will also need the program to install
them, which will either be provided with the patches, or will be included
with your program files.

Where do I get these files?
The most reliable source for current update and patch files is the DATASTORM
BBS (314-875-0503) or the DATASTORM Forum (GO DSTORM) on the CompuServe
Information Service. You will often be able to find them on local BBS
systems, too. The following table describes the current set of update and
patch files available for download. The "Lib #" field refers to the "file
library" on the BBS or Forum where these files can be found on the BBS or
Forum. You'll find details on how to download from the BBS below.

 h. In the Terminal field, select ANSI-BBS and press ENTER.
 i. Your Baud rate should be set correctly during your program installation.

2. Call the DATASTORM BBS at the number listed above. If it is your first
time logging on, the BBS will ask you the following series of questions (skip
this step if you have logged on before):

First Name? Type your first name and press ENTER.
Last Name? Type your last name and press ENTER.

 Is this correct? Press Y.

Enter the letter of your terminal, or <CR> if not listed. Choose PCPLUS,
PCPLUS/Win or ANSI-BBS.

A listing of your terminal profile will follow:

Do you wish to modify this? Press N.
Do you wish to have a pause after each display page(Y/N)? Press Y.
How many lines per Display page (10-80)? Type 24 and press ENTER.

Your password? Create a password up to 8 characters long.
Re-enter New password to verify: Type the same password again.

A series of informative screens will follow. At the end of each screen, press
any key to advance to the next screen. Eventually, you will reach the main
menu.

3. At the main menu prompt, press F to access the Uploads & Downloads menu.

4. At the next prompt, press D to access the File Download Menu.

The File Download Menu displays a list of areas containing files pertaining to
different DATASTORM products and other utilities.

5. Choose the appropriate Download Area. Each area is identified by one
character, either a letter or a number. For example, the PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows area is identified by the number "9". When you select the appropriate
area, the BBS will list files available in that area. After each page of
files is displayed, the BBS will pause so you can read the file descriptions.
You may press any key to continue with the next screen. When all the files
have been displayed, the BBS will display an the following options prompt:

<D>ownload, <P>rotocol, <E>xamine, <N>ew, <L>ist, or <H>elp
Selection or <CR> to Exit:

6. To download a file, press D and ENTER. You will then be prompted for the
filename. Using the table on page 2 as a guide, select and type the name of
the file you wish to download. If you need to download more than one file
(this is called a batch download), separate each name with a space.

7. You will then see a list of protocol choices:

T - TYPE file to your screen
   C - ASCII with DC2/DC4 Capture
A - ASCII only, no Control Codes
   X - XMODEM
   O - XMODEM-1k
   Y - YMODEM (Batch)
   G - YMODEM-g (Batch)
   S - SEAlink
   K - KERMIT
   W - SuperKERMIT (Sliding Windows)
   Z - ZMODEM-90

Select the desired protocol by pressing the letter next to it. If you choose
ZMODEM, the file transfer will automatically start (assuming you have turned
on Auto downloading in your ZMODEM Options menu). If you are doing a batch
download, you must choose a batch protocol, such as ZMODEM, YMODEM, YMODEM-G,
KERMIT or SuperKERMIT.

8. When the file transfer has been completed, you may then proceed with
downloading the next file, accessing other areas of the BBS or logging off the
BBS. If you do not wish to download another file, hit ENTER to return to the
File Download Menu.

9. At the File Download Menu, press G for Goodbye. The Call Termination menu
will appear. Press G, again, to log-off and hang-up.

Extracting and Installing the Contents of the Archive

You will have downloaded all files to your default download directory,
assuming you specified one (or accepted the suggested directory) when you
installed your program.

All of the files listed in the table above are self-extracting archive files.
Each one contains one or more files in compressed format. In order to install
your update or patch file, you must extract the files within the archive you
have downloaded to the correct subdirectory on your drive. Which directory
that is depends on which program you have.

PROCOMM PLUS (all DOS versions)

1. Exit the program. From the DOS prompt, change to the directory containing
the file(s) you have downloaded.

2. Copy the files into your PCPLUS directory, or whichever directory contains
your PROCOMM PLUS program files.

3. To extract, type the name of each file you downloaded, without typing the
.EXE extension. This will cause each file to extract its contents to your
directory. If you receive any messages asking if you want to overwrite an
existing file, press "Y" to allow the overwrite to occur.

4. View patch descriptions by displaying each file with a .DTP extension. You
can use the DOS TYPE command or a file viewer of your choice. The description
of each patch is contained in the first few lines of each file. For example:

   #
   # CTRL_.DTP - for use with DT_PATCH.EXE
   #
   # Copyright (C) 1992 DATASTORM TECHNOLOGIES, INC.
   #
   # All Rights Reserved
   #
   # Target File: PCPLUS.EXE version 2.01
   #
   # Some host systems use the Ctrl-- (Ctrl-Minus) key as a system
   # command. It is also used by PROCOMM PLUS to toggle video modes.
   #
   # After applying this patch, PROCOMM PLUS will send out the
   # Ctrl-Minus keystroke rather than changing video modes.
   #
   # WARNING! This patch disables the pulldown menu Toggle Lines
   # selection. After applying this patch, you must use
   # an ASPECT script to toggle video modes.
   #
   @PCPLUS.EXE
   =214016
   O11012
   xEB
   x48

5. Note the filenames of any patches you wish to install. Then type DT_PATCH
from the DOS prompt, followed by the name of the patch you want to install.
Example: typing DT_PATCH CTRL_.DTP will install the patch demonstrated above.
Repeat for each patch.

PROCOMM PLUS for Windows

1. Exit the program. Go to a DOS window (or exit Windows) and change to the
directory containing the file(s) you have downloaded.

2. Copy the files into your \prowin directory, or whichever directory contains
your PROCOMM PLUS for Windows program files. Alternatively, you can copy the
file(s) using the Windows File Manager or other file management utility.
Exception: if you downloaded the current field patches for PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows, copy them to your \prowin\aspect directory instead.

3. Type the name of each file you downloaded, without typing the .EXE
extension. This will cause each file to extract its contents to your
directory. If you receive any messages asking you if you want to overwrite an
existing file, press Y to allow overwrite to occur.

4. Install an Update file by typing UPDATE from the DOS prompt in your \prowin
directory. UPDATE.EXE will install all changes to each program executable
file and will create a report showing which files were changed.

5. To install a patch to PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, go back into the program
and click on the arrow by the script list (next to the "running man" icon) and
select the script called "patch" to execute it. From the following screen,
select a patch to view, and click on the "view" button. When you have
selected a patch you want to install, click on "Patch". Repeat to install
additional patches.
