PERSONAL NETWARE NETWORK INSTALLATION OF MICROSOFT ACCESS:

Novell has successfully installed and run Microsoft Access over a
Personal NetWare (PNW) 1.0 peer-to-peer network. This document lists
a few things to keep in mind.

UPDATE PERSONAL NETWARE:

Some Microsoft applications have trouble installing with the NetWare
VLM client version 1.10. The network administrator should update the
NetWare VLM client to version 1.20 or above. The network
administrator should also update the NetWare Windows drivers and
Personal NetWare. The update files can be found on the Novell DeskTop
BBS at (801) 221-5197. The VLM client update file has format of
VLMUPx.EXE (where x is the latest update number). The NetWare Windows
drivers update is WINDRx.EXE. And the Personal NetWare update is
P10Uxx.EXE. Download the files into separate directories on a servers
hard drive. Then run the .EXE file to extract the update files.
Follow the installation instructions included in the update file. The
update files will need to be installed on every machine on the
network. Re-boot each machine after the update files have been
installed.

MICROSOFT ACCESS ADMINISTRATIVE\NETWORK INSTALLATION:

The administration installation requires about 21.5 MB on the
server's hard drive.

To install MS Access to the PNW server, map a drive letter to the
server's hard drive where MS Access is to reside. The application
should be installed to, and run off of the same drive letter. Refer
to FAXBACK document # TID014937 for general information on installing
network applications.

Example:

In this example, the following mapping is used:

     NET MAP F: SERVER_DRVC SERVER_PC

The PNW server where MS Access is to reside is called SERVER_PC and
Access will be installed to, and run off of the shared directory
named SERVER_DRVC.

1. Launch Windows. At the Program Manager, click on File, Run, and
     enter:

          A:\SETUP /A

Where the installation diskette #1 is in drive A:. The /A option
is for a network administrative installation.

2. When prompted for the installation path, change the drive letter
to F: while leaving the directory names as is.

The installation routine will install the files to the PNW
server just as if it were installing them to the local hard
     drive.

WORK STATION INSTALLATION:

The work station installation requires about 600 KB on the local hard
drive.

1. Map the drive letter for the shared application, i.e.:

          NET MAP F: SERVER_DRVC SERVER_PC

2. Launch Windows. At the Program Manager, click on File, Run, and
     enter:

          F:\INSTALL\SETUP /N

The /N option is for a network work station installation.

3. Answer NO when prompted to install Access to your hard disk.

4. Use the default of C:\ACCESS for the local files. If the work
station does not have a local hard drive, then the network
administrator should setup a USERS area on a PNW server's hard
drive. In this case, the user would have a mapping to that USERS
area and the pathing changed to that location.

5. The "workgroup information" prompt can be confusing. It is NOT
referring to your Personal NetWare workgroup. It is referring to
the workgroup associated with Access. The correct workgroup file
resides on the PNW server. To select the correct file, click on
browse and look down the path, F:\MDB\ for the file: SYSTEM.MDA.
     Then double click on SYSTEM.MDA.

6. The setup routine will then copy about 600 KB in several files
     to the local hard drive.

7. If prompted to modify the SHARE parameters, allow the routine to
do the modification. It will set the Locks to 500, /L:500. If
the machine already has the locks higher than 500 then you might
not want to let the setup routine modify the share settings.

8. The Windows icons for Access will be automatically setup. If the
share settings were modified, then the machine will need to be
     re-booted prior to launching Access.
