I'm looking to trade for some shows. Especially wanted is Red Rocks from 93,
any 94 NYE run show except for Philly, and the Halloween video (will trade
tapes for it)

I have over 30 hours to trade. Email me for my show list

Even though the gamehenge set was orgasmic to say the least, I don't
really believe it belongs on the CD. I think the point of the double CD
is to chronicle the band's diverse song structures and improvisational
talents by mixing songs from different dates together. I'm sure the band
realizes that most fans can get a hold of almost any show, including
GreatHenge. There are certain "moments" during a show where the band
takes you to another level. The CDs should capture the best of these
"moments", allowing the listener to feel this musical ecstacy
throughout. Off the top of my head, my favorites are the jam in Foam
when the music flows soooo smooth and the buiding intensity of a Maze
jam. Peace.

I don't so much hate Sample as just think it represents some musical slacking
on the part of the band. Hoist has some jewels on it, but songs like
Wolfman's Brother, Sample and Dwd are very derivative. There's nothing wrong
with a little classic rock, mind you, but there are many better bands for that
stuff than Phish.

I resent "Sampleheads" not for their newness to the scene, but for their lack
of appreciation for Phish stuff that's further "out there." It has been my
experience that people who don't listen very deeply to music can enjoy stuff
like Sample, Chalkdust, etc. They scratch their heads bemusedly during Reba,
Harry, YEM, etc. And they cringe in disgust when they hear Demand, SOAMelt,
a screaming chaotic Bowie jam, a vocal jam, the Asse Festival, etc...in short,
the stuff that in my opinion makes Phish so unique and cool. Again, not
everyone needs to be a music major. But better mainstream music can be found
elsewhere, without invading our little scene.

Hi there.

I just got some really nice tapes of 12/28/94 (thanks C.D.!) and I'd like
to share 'em. I'll make tapes for the first three people who can email
me by tomorrow evening _and_ get tapes to me by the weekend so I can tape
them next week. This is very important as I will have no dubbing equipment
after next week! Limited time offer.

Also, since I will have some unexpected access to some taping equipment
next week I'd really like to do some trading. I'm looking especially for
anyone with HQ, preferably DAT, copies of 12/2/94 Davis and 12/3/94 San Jose
(including the DMB). I have about 50 hours to trade, and a couple great
'93's and '94's on DAT that I'd love to share.

Also - this is my quarterly grovel - I'm still looking for 3/25/93 Santa Cruz
and 12/31/91 Worcester. C'mon, it's been nearly a YEAR! Doesn't ANYONE
have those Santa Cruz tapes?

Thank you,

Mike.

ummm....Well, just for accuracy's sake, the sampling rate is actually
roughly 44kHz, which has nothing to do with the "8-bit" part. 8-bit means
that the voltage range over which the signal varies is divided into 2^8=256
discrete (*not* continuous) levels. The difference between discrete and
continuous voltage signals is the difference between digital and analog
encoding. I 'm not really sure, but 8-bit seems too low; if someone knows
for sure, please tell me. (I thought they were stored in 16-bit precision,
but since I don't know, I'll shut up :-) ) The original ASCII code allowed
for 128 characters (7-bit), but IBM made up their own version which has 256
characters (8-bit) which is pretty standard these days. As far as the
encyclopedia goes, if we assumed that an encyclopedia set contains 100
million characters (just as an example) which could all be encoded in the
original 7-bit ASCII code, the encyclopedia would require 100,000,000*128=
12,800,000,000 bits = 160MBytes. (There are 8 bits to the byte.) A 45 min
CD by comparison, stored in 8-bit precision with a 44kHz sampling rate
would require approximately 45min*60s/min*44,000/s*256bits = 3,801MBytes.

Whether or not memory storage was the main reason for choosing the length
of CD's or not, I don't know. I would be the choice had more to do with
marketing though.

I think the question can be rephrased as:

"Why are so many people afraid to like Phish?"

IMHO, the reason people don't like them is that they sound like
they are having too much fun. Also, I think having some
psychedelic experience helps appreciate the tunes - though it
is as likely nowadays to find people that actively deny their past
travels. For them, the vast open avenues that phish's music
represents might be threatening indeed.

Wow...another May '94 Stash makes the grade. My favorite Stashes are all from
the same month but I haven't heard that one yet.

For anyone interested in other hot Stashes check out:

5/8 Austin
5/13 Tempe
5/19 Eugene (Probably my favorite of the four)
5/21 Seattle

For earlier versions, my favorites are (curiously enough) 5/8/93, and 5/8/92

Based on this information, I propose that May 8th be declared "Stash Day",
although the whole month of May should be celebrated as "Stash Month".

On another related note, I just heard 5/8/77 from those old guys and let me
tell you, that is one hell of a show. No matter what you think of the Dead, do
yourself a favor and check that one out...I've always been kinda apathetic
about the Dead but 5/8/77 has really shaken my sensibilities. It's a definite
Golden Hose kinda show.

Does anyone else know of any other remarkable music performed on May
8th...besides the Stashes, those three Phish shows are all smokers
(particularly 5/8/93) and I'd love to hear any GD that's better than 5/8/77
(I'm ready to experience a renaissance)
