Selecting an NMP2 version for your network

There are several versions of the NMP2. While the install program
attempts to insure that the correct version is selected for the
operation system that is selected, there are now many variations on the
underlying network protocols. This document is intended to help clarify
which selection is appropriate for various operating systems and network
protocols.

There are five basic versions of the NMP2 in this release. They
use the IPX protocol with a NetWare bindery, IPX with no bindery,
NetBIOS datagrams, NetBIOS sessions, and Vines IPC. The supported
network selected determines which of these versions are installed, and
which default directories will be displayed during the installation.

If you are using the IPX protocol with a NetWare 2.x, 3.x or 4.x
file server you should select either the NetWare 2.x or NetWare 3.x
installation. This will use the IPX protocol with the NetWare bindery
or, in the case of NetWare 4.x, bindery emulation.

If you are using the IPX protocol with NetWare ELS, NetWare Lite,
Personal NetWare, Microsoft Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95 you
should select either NetWare ELS v2.10 or earlier, NetWare ELS v2.12 or
later, or NetWare Lite. These all install the same version of the NMP2
and NCSI, but vary in the default file locations, which may be
over-ridden to specify the location of your choice.

If you are using Vines, select the Vines installation option.

There are two choices for NetBIOS protocol support. The NetBIOS
Session Services should only be selected with certain NetBIOS network
operating systems. Notably, NetBIOS session support should be used with
Digital Equipment Corporation network operating systems like Pathworks.
In addition, networks running routers that convert Datagram packets to
NetBIOS multicasts should use the session option.

Other operation systems, such as Lantastic, Windows for Workgroups,
LAN Server, and LAN Manager support the NetBIOS protocol. This protocol
is supported on many other network operation systems as well. In
addition some network using the TCP/IP protocol support NetBIOS calls,
and will work with the NetBIOS version of the NMP. The NMP2 should be
installed for NetBIOS Datagram Services when used with these network
operating systems.
