ISSUE

Occasionally, a user may wish to do a partial install of Novell DOS 7, in
order to save disk space. While Novell cannot anticipate every custom install
desired, two approaches to partial install are discussed here.

METHOD A: Installing Basic ND7 and Stacker files

This section describes installing the basic ND7 files plus Stacker 3.12.
"Basic ND7" means all Novell DOS commands and utilities, no network files or
drivers, and none of the 3rd Party utilities (ie Fastback, Search and
Destroy). This will save you almost 3MB of space in the NWDOS directory. We
will not discuss removing Stacker to save disk space, as Stacker can provide
you with a great deal more disk space than it occupies.

This section will also describe the files you will need for Novell DOS and
Stacker in Windows. This will save 1MB of space in the Windows and
Windows\System directories (compared to the amount of space taken if INSTALL
adds all the DOS files for Windows).

(A1) Run INSTALL from the #1 disk. Select NOT to install network files, and
NOT to install Windows files.

(A2) After INSTALL completes and the system is rebooted, go to the newly
installed NWDOS directory ("CD \NWDOS").

(A3) Issue the following commands, to delete unneeded files. MAKE SURE TO
TYPE THESE EXACTLY AS WRITTEN, TO AVOID DELETED NECESSARY FILES:

        DEL *.DBF
        DEL *.CDB
        DEL DEFAULT.*
        DEL FB*.*
        DEL *.FBM
        DEL SDRES.*
        DEL SDSCAN.*
        DEL *.VRB
        DEL RPLDOC.TXT

(A4) If you DO NOT have Windows, also DEL WINSWAP2.EXE (also located in the
newly installed NWDOS subdirectory). Then you are done. If you DO have
Windows, proceed with steps A5-A8.

(A5) Copy TASKMGR.EXE to the Windows directory with the command:

COPY C:\NWDOS\TASKMGR.EXE C:\WINDOWS

(A6) To enable the ability to create a Windows 386 Enhanced Mode Permanent or
Temporary swap file on a Stacker drive, copy WINSWAP*.* from the disk labeled
"Utilities 4" to the Windows\System subdirectory (ie COPY A:WINSWAP*.*
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM). Four files should copy over. Some of the WINSWAP files
will then need to be decompressed. From inside the Windows\System
subdirectory give the command:

        PNUNPACK WINSWAP.??_ /o

You should see 3 files get unpacked. After this completes, you may erase the
packed copies, with the command:

DEL WINSWAP.??_

Once you have compressed a drive with Novell DOS Stacker, you will notice a
new Virtual Memory icon in the Control Panel. Use this to create a swap file
on the Stacked drive, if necessary. Note that before compressing a drive, you
should set the swap file type to NONE or insure that the existing swap file is
located on a different drive.

(A7) To change the MS DOS icon to the Novell DOS icon, run Windows and pull
up the PROPERTIES for the MS DOS icon. This can be done by holding down the
ALT key while you double-click on the icon. Change the DESCRIPTION field to
"Novell DOS Prompt". Change the COMMAND LINE field to "C:\COMMAND.COM".
Choose "Change Icon" and then "Browse". Go into the NWDOS directory and
select the file "COMMAND.ICO". Click on "OKAY" until you are back to the
Program Manager. The new icon should now be in place.

(A8) To enable a new "Stacker" pull down menu in File Manager, edit the
WINFILE.INI file in the Windows directory. If the file does not exist, run
Windows, start the File Manager (MAIN group) and then close it (File Manager)
completely. The .ini file should then exist. Add a new section to the
beginning, called, "[AddOns]" (if this section is already there, you do not
need to add another). In that section, place the line
"Stacker Extension=C:\NWDOS\STACFM.DLL". After this, File Manager should
have a new pull down menu, called, "Stacker". Note that this new menu will
only be useable after using Novell DOS SETUP to compress disk space.

This completes Method A.

METHOD B: Customizing installation through SETUP.INI

SETUP.INI contains many customizable features. The section discusses only
one. If you plan to do several installs of Novell DOS over a network,
altering the SETUP.INI can accomplish the same install as described above,
without the need to delete as many files yourself. However, this method will
not save time on the Windows portion, which will still need to be done on each
individual workstation.

This method will not save time on only one install, as changing the SETUP.INI
file takes time and effort. Keep a copy of the original SETUP.INI, as you may
need it again. Installation over a network can be accomplished by copying all
files on the install disks to one subdirectory on a server, then mapping the
client workstation to the server, and running INSTALL from there.

The latter part of the SETUP.INI file is a list of all 6 disks and what files
will get copied from them to the drive during INSTALL. The destination of
these files is specified by the portion of the line which precedes the
filename. You will only need to worry about altering lines that begin with
"NWDOS:d", as we can avoid installing many unwanted files merely by telling
install not to install that category of files (networking files, windows
files).

(B1) Remove any lines in this section that meet BOTH of the following two
requirements:

        The line begins with "NWDOS:d".

The file specified matches one of the wildcard specifications
        listed above in step A3.

(B2) Make sure the altered SETUP.INI is in the directory where INSTALL
resides, then give the command INSTALL. Choose NOT to install the network
nor the Windows files. This will install only the basic DOS and Stacker
files.

After install completes and the machine is rebooted, perform steps A4-A8,
above.
