ISSUE:

Q: Is it possible to connect a Personal NetWare printer to the
Ethernet cable rather than directly to a server's LPT port?

A: Yes, via ExtendNet from Extended Systems.

NOTE: this is a third party solution and therefore the third party
should be contacted for support. Customers using ExtendNet and are
having trouble with printing, should contact Extended Systems for
support.

If the customer calls Novell for printer support in an ExtendNet
environment, Novell will require the ExtendNet be removed from the
network and the printer connected directly to a PNW server's LPT
port. After the printing issue has been resolved with the printer
connected directly to a server's LPT port, then the customer can
re-connect the ExtendNet configuration and test the printing again.
If the printing problem returns, then the customer will need to call
Extended Systems for additional support.

The solution is specific to HP LaserJet III and IV printers. The
solution requires an expansion card (model # ESI-2866) be installed
in the printer. The Ethernet cable (coax or 10base-T) is connected
to the expansion card. A PNW server loads a TSR, NWLESI, that
redirects the print jobs to the ExtendNet printer card via the
Ethernet cable. The ExtendNet card can service print jobs from
NetWare, Personal NetWare, NetWare Lite, and AppleTalk.

It is NOT possible to use ExtendNet to print to a common printer from
different PNW workgroups (verified in house and by Extended Systems).
Extended Systems says it may be possible to install 2 ExtendNet cards
in the common printer and then 2 different workgroups may be able to
print to the common printer. One workgroup would print to one of the
cards and the other workgroup would print to the other card (this has
not been tested).

Extended Systems recommends the following printer configurations:

Define the PNW printer according to the instructions in the ExtendNet
manual.
* Set the Char Per Second to 65535.
* Set the Error Wait Time to 1200.
*    Create a Setup String,
          i.e.: call it ExtendNet with values: 2E 2C 3A 45 53 49.
* When capturing the port use:
NET CAPTURE LPT(x) (printer name) S=ExtendNet
